Campgrounds near Compo

Compo sits on the Connecticut coast of Long Island Sound in Fairfield County, roughly an hour from New York City. RV travelers using it as a base have two directions to choose from: inland state parks in western Connecticut, and Long Island parks reached by the Bridgeport-Port Jefferson ferry across the Sound. On the Connecticut side, Kettletown State Park sits on the eastern shore of Lake Zoar, an impoundment of the Housatonic River, on 605 acres in Southbury and Oxford. Long Island options include Heckscher State Park on the Great South Bay in East Islip, and Wildwood State Park, a hardwood-forested park ending on a high bluff over Long Island Sound near Wading River. For a car-free barrier-island experience, Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island's eastern end offers 20 sand tent sites and 8 safari tent glamping sites, reached by private boat or the Watch Hill Ferry from Patchogue, NY. Private options such as Totoket Valley RV Park round out the mix for renters who need standard hookups.

Things to do in Compo

Water access shapes most trips. Wildwood delivers beach frontage on Long Island Sound for fishing and swimming, plus a network of marked hiking trails, picnic areas, ball fields, and a playground. Heckscher pairs shoreline recreation with open space: bay swimming, boat launching, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding on the Great South Bay, with paved multi-use paths for hiking and biking. At Fire Island, the Watch Hill boardwalk connects the campground to a lifeguarded ocean beach, a marina, a general store and snack bar, a self-guided nature trail, and the adjacent Otis Pike High Dune Wilderness for backcountry hiking. Kettletown's day-use areas remain open for hiking on the Miller Trail and lake access, even while the campground itself is closed.

The camping calendar in this region is short. Heckscher's campground operates from late May through early September, and Watch Hill sites are typically available from mid-May through mid-October. Wildwood runs a seasonal operation through the warm months and accommodates both RVs and tent campers. Summer is peak season on both sides of the Sound; weekends fill months in advance and biting insects are a factor. Mosquitoes at Watch Hill are a well-documented problem in the wilderness setting, and strong repellent is essential. Late spring and early fall bring cooler temperatures, lighter crowds, and better weekday availability, though water for swimming is coldest in May and warmest in August. One planning note for the Connecticut side: Kettletown State Park Campground remains closed following flood damage from an August 2024 heavy rainfall event that damaged park access roads and washed out the campground road bridge. Per Connecticut DEEP, the campground will remain closed for both the 2026 and 2027 seasons. Day-use areas have reopened; confirm status before booking.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Our first van life trip was a success thanks to our wonderful hosts! The van has everything you need to be comfortable camping! Plenty of storage space to bring your own gear! Communication between the hosts and ourselves was effortless! They respond quickly and are very attentive. Definitely worth the experience and would recommend them highly!

How to book campgrounds near Compo

Connecticut and New York state parks each use ReserveAmerica on separate contracts. For New York parks including Heckscher and Wildwood, same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites, walk-ins are permitted on campsites, and reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, with a 9-month booking window. Reservations outside that window face restrictions on changes and cancellations for 18 days after booking. Watch Hill runs on a different system. Watch Hill Campground does not offer reservations through Recreation.gov; the campground is operated by concessioner LoveFINS, and camping and glamping bookings go through lovefins.com. Backcountry permits for the adjacent Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness are handled on Recreation.gov. Private parks such as Totoket Valley RV Park book directly through the operator.

What to expect at Compo campgrounds

Hookups and site sizes vary widely. Heckscher offers tent and trailer sites in a large, open, flat layout, with restrooms, showers, and a small camp store; only one vehicle is allowed per site, with additional cars parked in a designated area for a fee. Wildwood provides tent and trailer campsites with restrooms and showers. RV renters needing 30/50-amp full service should plan for private parks such as Totoket Valley RV Park. Rules matter for planning. Pets are not permitted at Heckscher campsites or cottages, and the maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights. Pets are not permitted in the Kettletown campground, and alcohol is prohibited at Kettletown. Bringing firewood into Connecticut state parks from other states is prohibited; buy it locally.
