Camping near Old Hill, Connecticut
Old Hill sits in Fairfield County in southwestern Connecticut, within a short drive of state parks in the lower Housatonic Valley, the Litchfield Hills, and the Hudson Highlands across the New York line. RV renters have a mix of inland lake, reservoir, and barrier-island options, most run by state agencies or the National Park Service rather than private resorts.
The closest developed campgrounds sit inside protected parks. Kettletown State Park in Southbury covers 605 acres on the eastern shore of Lake Zoar, with over six miles of hiking trails and a lakeside setting on the Housatonic River. The Kettletown State Park Campground will remain closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons due to flood damages sustained during a heavy rainfall event in August 2024.
Alternatives within roughly an hour to two hours include Lake Waramaug State Park Campground in the Litchfield Hills, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park in New York's Hudson Highlands, and, for those willing to leave the RV and take a ferry, Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island. Heckscher State Park on the south shore of Long Island rounds out the regional options for beach-oriented trips.
Things to do around Old Hill
Water recreation drives most trip plans. Kettletown State Park features Lake Zoar, the fifth largest freshwater body in the state, created in 1919 when the Connecticut Light and Power Company constructed the Stevenson Dam, and its day-use areas support paddling and shoreline fishing even while the campground is closed. Lake Waramaug State Park Campground offers a quieter lake setting in the Litchfield Hills, well suited to canoes, kayaks, and families with young children.
Hikers can pair a stay at Pelton Pond in Clarence Fahnestock State Park with trail access into the Hudson Highlands and connecting sections of the Appalachian Trail corridor. For a saltwater trip, Heckscher State Park sits on Great South Bay with swimming and bike paths, and Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island National Seashore reaches ocean beach, bay, and dune wilderness by ferry from Patchogue.

Camping in this region is a warm-weather activity. Connecticut inland state park campgrounds generally operate from spring through early fall, with several parks running a May through September season in 2026. At Watch Hill on Fire Island, sites are available typically from mid-May weekend to mid-October, and the campground is operated by concessioner LoveFINS. Winter overnight camping is not offered at these parks, so RV renters should plan trips between late spring and mid-fall.
Summer is peak season and books out fast on weekends and holidays. Watch Hill applies weekend minimum stays during the peak summer season and longer minimums for the Independence Day and Labor Day holiday weekends, so multi-night blocks should be planned early.
One closure to plan around: the Kettletown campground and surrounding areas, including the Pomeraug, Crest and Brook Trails, are closed and will remain closed for the 2026 season, and a reopening date has not yet been determined. Day-use areas and the youth group campsites at Kettletown are open.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Our first van life trip was a success thanks to our wonderful hosts! The van has everything you need to be comfortable camping! Plenty of storage space to bring your own gear! Communication between the hosts and ourselves was effortless! They respond quickly and are very attentive. Definitely worth the experience and would recommend them highly!

How to book
Connecticut state park campsites are booked through ReserveAmerica on the Connecticut state parks contract, with reservations required at least one day ahead of arrival and available up to eleven months in advance. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock is a New York State Parks campground and reserves through the New York state parks reservation system on a similar rolling window.
Watch Hill Campground does not offer reservations through Recreation.gov; the campground is operated by concessioner LoveFINS. For current fees and to make a reservation, visit the concessionaire's website at lovefins.com. Book weekend and holiday stays as early as possible.
What to expect
Sites in this region tend to be wooded and modest in size rather than resort-style. Kettletown Campground offers 61 sites in both open and wooded settings when operating, with a mix of RV and tent use. Alcohol is prohibited at Kettletown State Park and pets are not permitted in the campground, and pet and alcohol rules are similar at other Connecticut state park campgrounds.
Watch Hill is a different experience for RV travelers: the RV stays on the mainland. The campground includes 20 sand tent sites and 8 safari tent glamping sites, and transportation is by private boat or the Watch Hill Ferry from Patchogue, NY. Expect basic facilities, ferry-based logistics, and strict food-storage practices at inland parks where black bears are present.
