Campgrounds and RV parks near Saugatuck, CT

Saugatuck is a village of Westport, Connecticut on the shore of Long Island Sound, roughly an hour by car from New York City. The area itself is dense suburban shoreline with no campgrounds inside town limits, so RV renters typically stage day trips into Westport and Fairfield County and camp at state-run parks in the wider region. Options split cleanly between inland forested parks to the north in the Housatonic and Hudson highlands and beach-oriented parks across Long Island Sound in Suffolk County, New York. The closest developed public campground on the Connecticut side is Kettletown State Park in Southbury, a 600-plus-acre park bordering Lake Zoar, about an hour north. Farther afield, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park sits in the Hudson Highlands near Cold Spring. On the New York side of the Sound, Heckscher State Park, Wildwood State Park, and Watch Hill Campground at Fire Island National Seashore all offer summer camping within reach of Saugatuck via I-95 and the Bridgeport to Port Jefferson ferry. Most of these are seasonal facilities on state or federal reservation systems, so planning ahead is essential for summer weekends.

Public campgrounds around Saugatuck use two main reservation systems. Connecticut state parks book on the Connecticut ReserveAmerica portal up to 11 months in advance of arrival, with a one-day minimum lead time. New York state parks, including Heckscher, Wildwood, and Clarence Fahnestock, also use ReserveAmerica but on the New York portal. Campsite reservations can be made for today and up to 9 months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival for campsites. Watch Hill Campground is operated by concessioner LoveFINS, and Watch Hill Family Campground reservations are not available on Recreation.gov; bookings go through the LoveFINS website. Backcountry permits for the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness are handled by the National Park Service through Recreation.gov.
