Campgrounds near South Wilton
South Wilton sits in Fairfield County in southwestern Connecticut, close enough to the coast, the Litchfield Hills, and the Hudson Highlands that RV travelers can reach a mix of state park campgrounds and private lakeside resorts within a short drive. There is no campground in South Wilton itself, so trips are typically built around one of several state-run parks in Connecticut and New York plus one long-standing private option in Dutchess County.
The closest Connecticut state facility has historically been Kettletown State Park on Lake Zoar in Southbury. However, the Kettletown campground remains closed following flood damage from an August 2024 heavy rainfall event that washed out the campground access bridge, and Connecticut State Parks has announced it will stay closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons while repairs are completed.
Other options in the region include Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park and Heckscher State Park on Long Island, both operated by New York State Parks, along with Lake Waramaug State Park Campground in the Litchfield Hills and the private Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc. in Hopewell Junction, New York. Together they cover tent, trailer, RV, cabin, and cottage stays.
Things to do near South Wilton
Water activities anchor most trips. Lake Waramaug State Park Campground offers swimming, car-top boating, lake fishing, and on-site canoe and kayak rentals, and the eight-mile road loop around the lake is a popular cycling route that passes wineries such as Hopkins Vineyard. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc. sits on a spring-fed lake with a private beach, a boat launch for non-motorized craft, a playground, and open fields for ball games.
Hiking and shoreline recreation fill out the rest. Clarence Fahnestock has hiking trails, boat rentals on Canopus Lake, and a section of the Appalachian Trail running through the park. Heckscher State Park fronts the Great South Bay with four miles of paved multi-use trails, picnic groves, bay swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and windsurfing, with Fire Island visible across the water.

Camping in this corner of the Northeast is a warm-season activity. Connecticut state park campgrounds such as Lake Waramaug run from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day, opening in late May and closing in mid-October. Cabins at Lake Waramaug rent Friday and Saturday only and are not available after Labor Day weekend.
New York state parks follow a similar rhythm. Heckscher State Park's campground operates from late May through early September, and the Pelton Pond area at Clarence Fahnestock typically runs from spring through mid-October. The Fahnestock campground is closed for the 2026 season to allow construction of a new bathhouse, though the park's day-use areas and group wilderness campground remain open.
Summer weekends fill quickly, especially around July 4 and Labor Day. Fall foliage draws sightseers to Lake Waramaug in particular. Winter camping is not offered at these parks, though Fahnestock Winter Park operates groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails, and Heckscher stays open year-round for picnicking.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Our first van life trip was a success thanks to our wonderful hosts! The van has everything you need to be comfortable camping! Plenty of storage space to bring your own gear! Communication between the hosts and ourselves was effortless! They respond quickly and are very attentive. Definitely worth the experience and would recommend them highly!

How to book campgrounds near South Wilton
Connecticut state park campgrounds, including Lake Waramaug State Park Campground, are booked through the Connecticut ReserveAmerica portal. Reservations can be made up to eleven months ahead and must be booked at least one day before arrival, with a two-night minimum for most advance reservations. Cabins are Friday and Saturday only with a two-night minimum. Kettletown State Park is not accepting camping reservations while it remains closed for repairs.
New York state parks use the New York ReserveAmerica system or 1-800-456-2267. Heckscher State Park sites can be booked up to nine months out, including same-day reservations, while the Pelton Pond campground at Clarence Fahnestock requires reservations at least two days ahead when it is open.

What to expect at campgrounds near South Wilton
Expect basic state-park facilities rather than resort amenities. Neither Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock nor Heckscher provides hookups at campsites, though Heckscher has a dump station and both parks have centrally located restrooms and showers. Lake Waramaug has 76 sites in wooded and open settings with restrooms, showers, drinking water, and a dump station, but no hookups. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc. is the option for full hookup RV camping.
Connecticut state campgrounds prohibit alcohol and pets, and campers must be on site to check in by 8:45 p.m. at Lake Waramaug. Cell service is minimal at Lake Waramaug and can be spotty in the Hudson Highlands. Maximum stay at these state parks is fourteen consecutive nights. Black bears, deer, raccoons, and skunks are present, so food and trash must be stored in vehicles or bear-safe containers.
