Camping near Staples, Connecticut
Staples is a census-designated place on the eastern side of Westport in Fairfield County, Connecticut, roughly an hour from New York City by road. It sits within Westport, bordered to the north by Cross Highway, to the west by Compo Road, to the south by U.S. Route 1, and to the east by the town of Fairfield. The location puts RV travelers within reach of Connecticut state parks in the Housatonic and Naugatuck valleys as well as Long Island's south-shore parks across Long Island Sound.
RV-friendly options in the region are limited but varied. Totoket Valley RV Park sits about an hour east near North Branford and is the closest full-hookup private park, useful as a base for exploring the coast. State parks such as Black Rock State Park near Watertown and Kettletown State Park on Lake Zoar offer wooded sites managed by Connecticut DEEP, while Heckscher State Park and Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island expand the choice into New York.
Most public campgrounds in the area run a warm-weather season, so trip planning should be built around late-spring through early-fall windows, with reservations booked well ahead for summer weekends.
Things to do near Staples
Water access is a major draw. Kettletown State Park has over six miles of trails, scenic overlooks of Lake Zoar on the Housatonic River, and a shaded picnic area, with the 605-acre park sitting on the eastern shore of Lake Zoar, the fifth largest freshwater body in the state. Day-use areas remain open even while the campground is offline, so hikers can still use portions of the park.
Black Rock State Park adds swimming, stream and pond fishing, hiking, picnicking, and field sports, and offers access to the Mattatuck Trail running from Waterbury to the Wigwam Reservoir in Morris.
On Long Island, Heckscher State Park offers bay swimming at West Beach, boat launches, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, paddleboarding, and paved multi-use trails for hiking and biking. Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island adds ocean beach, a lifeguarded swim area in season, and access to a federally designated wilderness.

The Connecticut and New York state-park camping season is short and clearly bracketed. Black Rock State Park opens for weekends starting the third weekend in April, then runs daily from Memorial Day weekend through the end of September. Heckscher State Park on Long Island typically opens in late May and closes in early September, with reservations available through ReserveAmerica and a maximum of 14 consecutive nights per stay.
Kettletown State Park requires a workaround for the near term. The park sustained flood damage from an unprecedented heavy rainfall event, and the campground and surrounding areas, including the Pomeraug, Crest and Brook Trails, remain closed with no reopening date yet determined. Day-use areas, including the Miller Trail and youth group campsites, are open per scheduled park hours.
Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island is strictly seasonal. Transportation to the campground is by private boat or the Watch Hill Ferry from Patchogue, NY, and sites are typically available from mid-May to mid-October, weather permitting.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Easy pick up and drop off. Joe and Kim go over and above to make sure your experience with the vehicle is a positive one.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to book campgrounds near Staples
Connecticut state-park campgrounds use ReserveAmerica through the Connecticut DEEP system. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be booked up to 11 months in advance. Popular summer weekends at Black Rock fill quickly. After Labor Day the model changes: campsites are available for advance reservations on Friday and Saturday nights and are open to walk-ins Sunday through Thursday.
New York state-park bookings also run through ReserveAmerica, with a maximum window of nine months in advance. Same-day reservations at Heckscher and other New York state park campgrounds are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites only, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Watch Hill Campground does not offer reservations through Recreation.gov; the concessioner LoveFINS handles camping, glamping and marina bookings directly. Totoket Valley RV Park takes reservations by phone with the family owner-operator.
What to expect at area campgrounds
Sites in this region skew rustic. Connecticut state park campgrounds typically offer tent and RV pads with picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms and dump stations, but few have full hookups. Alcohol is prohibited at Kettletown State Park, pets are not permitted in the campground, and there is a maximum of two vehicles per campsite. Similar pet and alcohol restrictions apply at Black Rock.
For full RV hookups near Staples, Totoket Valley RV Park is the practical private option, with full hookup sites near New Haven.
Watch Hill has its own rules driven by the ferry-only access. Camping requires carrying gear from the ferry dock along a boardwalk to the campsites. Campfires are not allowed, only charcoal can be burned in the designated grills, and camp stoves are permitted. Fuel cannot be transported on the ferry and must be purchased at the island general store. That means Watch Hill is not an RV destination; it is a tent or safari-tent trip.
