Campgrounds near Westport Village
Westport Village sits on Connecticut's southwest coast along Long Island Sound, roughly an hour from New York City and within reach of state park campgrounds in the Litchfield Hills and Hudson Highlands, plus ferry-access coastal sites on Long Island. RV travelers use it as a base for beach days on the Sound, hikes in the wooded hills to the north, and barrier-island camping across the bay on Fire Island.
Inland options include Kettletown State Park on Lake Zoar and Lake Waramaug State Park Campground in the Litchfield Hills, both run by Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park lies across the New York border in the Hudson Highlands, on a wooded pond just off the Taconic State Parkway.
For coastal camping, Heckscher State Park on Long Island's Great South Bay and Watch Hill Campground - Fire Island National Seashore reach onto the barrier island itself. Note that both Kettletown and Pelton Pond campgrounds are closed for the 2026 season, so plan around those closures when scoping trips.
Things to do near Westport Village
Water is the main draw. Lake Waramaug State Park Campground offers swimming, car-top boating, and canoe and kayak rentals on one of the state's most scenic lakes, and the loop road around the lake is a popular cycling circuit. Heckscher State Park adds bay swimming at West Beach, boat launches, and four miles of paved multi-use trail for biking or walking.
Hiking options run from short to serious. Clarence Fahnestock State Park sits along the Appalachian Trail corridor and includes a short loop around Pelton Pond that suits families with kids. Watch Hill Campground - Fire Island National Seashore backs onto the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness, the only federally designated wilderness in New York State, with ocean beach, lifeguarded swimming in summer, and boardwalk nature trails.

The camping season is short and heavily weighted toward summer. Lake Waramaug State Park Campground runs Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day, with the 2026 season opening in late May and closing in mid-October. Heckscher State Park's campground operates from late May through early September, and Watch Hill sites are typically available from mid-May through mid-October.
Clarence Fahnestock's Pelton Pond campground normally stretches from mid-May into fall, but it is closed for the 2026 season to allow construction of a new bathhouse. Fahnestock also runs a winter park with groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails, though overnight camping is not offered then.
Summer weekends fill fastest, especially at Watch Hill, where demand for glamping tents and sand tent sites is strong through July and August. Kettletown State Park's campground remains closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons due to flood damage sustained during the August 2024 rainfall event, with no reopening date announced.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Our first van life trip was a success thanks to our wonderful hosts! The van has everything you need to be comfortable camping! Plenty of storage space to bring your own gear! Communication between the hosts and ourselves was effortless! They respond quickly and are very attentive. Definitely worth the experience and would recommend them highly!

How to book a site
Connecticut and New York state park campgrounds both use ReserveAmerica. At Lake Waramaug State Park Campground, reservations open 11 months in advance and close the day before arrival, with a two-night minimum on most advance bookings. Alcohol and pets are prohibited in Connecticut state park campgrounds, and out-of-state firewood cannot be brought in.
Heckscher State Park accepts campsite reservations up to nine months ahead and allows same-day bookings until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival; walk-ins are permitted for campsites only. Pets are not allowed at campsites or cottages, and the maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights.
Watch Hill Campground - Fire Island National Seashore books through concessioner LoveFINS rather than Recreation.gov, and requires online reservations at least 48 hours ahead. Access is by private boat or the Watch Hill Ferry from Patchogue.
What to expect
Sites in this region skew rustic. Connecticut state parks generally offer picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms, and showers, but hookups are limited. Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park has no electric, water, or sewer hookups and no dump station, and it caps RVs at 40 feet, so verify site dimensions before booking. Heckscher State Park is similarly hookup-free but has a dump station on site.
Black bears, deer, raccoons, and skunks are common at inland sites, so food and trash must be stored in vehicles or bear-resistant containers. Biting insects peak in June and July, especially at coastal sites near marshland.
Watch Hill is unusual: no cars, everything arrives by ferry, and the campground sits behind the dunes with sand tent pads and safari-style glamping tents. Plan meals and supplies before the crossing, and expect ferry schedules to dictate check-in and check-out timing.
