Camping near Georgetown, Delaware
Georgetown sits in central Sussex County, about a half-hour inland from the Delaware Beaches. That location makes it a practical base for RV travelers who want to reach Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, and Cape Henlopen without paying beach-town premiums for a campsite. Most nearby campgrounds are within a short drive of Route 113 or Route 9.
Camping options fall into two categories. Private RV parks in the surrounding countryside offer full hookups, pools, and family programming, including Deep Branch Family Campground, Tall Pines Campground Resort, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Delaware Beaches, and Holly Lake Campsites. For a rustic tent-only side trip, Redden State Forest, Delaware's largest state forest at more than 14,000 acres just north of Georgetown, offers primitive designated sites at its Headquarters Tract.
The surrounding landscape is flat coastal-plain forest and farmland, with loblolly pine, mixed hardwoods, and small ponds. Sites tend to be shaded and level, which suits larger rigs at the private resorts.
Things to do around Georgetown
Beach access drives most itineraries. Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, and Cape Henlopen State Park are all within roughly thirty minutes by car, and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry connects to southern New Jersey. Trap Pond State Park, southwest of Georgetown, holds the northernmost natural stand of baldcypress trees in the country and rents kayaks and canoes for paddling the swamp.
Closer in, Redden State Forest has more than 44 miles of trails used for hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, and birdwatching, plus a small catch-and-release fishing pond at the Headquarters Tract. Family resorts such as Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park and Tall Pines Campground Resort run on-site pools, playgrounds, and themed weekends that keep kids busy on rainy afternoons.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, driven by beach traffic on Route 1. Private RV parks near Georgetown, including Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park: Delaware Beaches and Holly Lake Campsites, fill weekends well in advance during July and August, and many run themed events that book out even earlier. Weekday arrivals and Sunday-through-Thursday stays are easier to secure.
Late spring and early fall are the sweet spot for RV travel. May, June, September, and early October bring warm days, cooler nights, thinner crowds, and open beaches. Fall also lines up with fewer biting insects and comfortable hiking weather at Redden State Forest and Trap Pond.
Winter is the quiet season. Some private campgrounds close or reduce services between roughly late October and April, while Redden State Forest keeps primitive tent camping available year-round. Atlantic tropical activity peaks from August into October, and coastal storms can affect low-lying beach access even when Georgetown itself stays dry.
How to book a campsite
Private RV parks near Georgetown handle reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends and holiday periods, book several months out. Deposits and cancellation windows vary by property, so confirm the policy before locking in dates, especially for holiday weekends when minimum-stay requirements are common.
Redden State Forest uses the Delaware Forest Service's online reservation portal at de.gov/forestcamping. The Headquarters Tract has eighteen primitive tent sites, restricted to designated campsites by permit, with a three-night maximum per reservation and a valid credit card required at booking. Travel trailers and self-propelled motor homes are excluded due to access and parking limits, so state forest camping suits tent setups and small camper vans only. The reservation confirmation serves as the camping permit, and no formal check-in is required.
What to expect on-site
Private campgrounds around Georgetown, including Deep Branch Family Campground, Tall Pines Campground Resort, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park, and Holly Lake Campsites, typically offer full hookups, dump stations, laundry, camp stores, and family amenities such as pools and playgrounds. Site sizes and big-rig access vary, so confirm length, slide-out clearance, and hookup type when booking.
Redden State Forest is a different experience. Sites are primitive with no electric, water, or septic hookups, and no showers or bath facilities. Amenities are limited to fire rings, picnic tables, charcoal grills, water spigots at central points, portable toilets, and firewood available on-site. A carry-in, carry-out policy applies.
Cell coverage is generally reliable in and around Georgetown. Expect mosquitoes and ticks from late spring through early fall, and pack accordingly for humid summer nights.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Georgetown, DE?
RV rental in Georgetown typically runs between $95 and $250 per night, which is one of the most affordable beach-adjacent rental markets on the Delmarva Peninsula. Travel trailers and pop-ups sit at the lower end, while Class C motorhomes and larger Class A rigs land at the top. Filter by Instant Book on RVezy to lock in the best deals fast.
visitdelaware.com/things-to-do/outdoors/camping/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Georgetown, DE?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Delaware for any standard motorhome or travel trailer under 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which covers virtually every rental on RVezy. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and no special endorsement required. You just need to be an RVezy approved driver (generally 25 or older) with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) if your license is not in English. First-timers are often surprised how straightforward the process is, especially for a Class C motorhome rental Georgetown travelers love for its easy handling.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Georgetown RV rental?
Every RV rental in Georgetown booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with confidence. During checkout you choose your protection level (the guest selects, not the host), letting you increase coverage for a longer Sussex County beach trip or keep it standard for a quick weekend at Trap Pond. The plan covers most damage to the vehicle, and RVezy support is one call away day or night if anything comes up. That built-in safety net is a big reason first-time renters feel good booking their first Delaware RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Georgetown RV rental?
Booking is low risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so you can lock in a great Georgetown rig with confidence. Refund eligibility after that window depends on how far out you are from your trip start date, and special circumstances like severe weather can apply, which matters on the mid-Atlantic coast during hurricane season (June through November). If your plans change, contact RVezy support and they will walk you through your options. Bottom line: you are not stuck. Book the rig you want for your Delaware beach trip and adjust later if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Georgetown RV trip?
Absolutely, and Sussex County is a fantastic place for it. Plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Georgetown; just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see them all. Cape Henlopen State Park allows leashed dogs on most trails and on the beach outside of the lifeguarded swimming areas from October 1 to April 30, and Trap Pond State Park is dog-welcoming year-round with miles of shaded loblolly pine trails. Downtown Lewes and Rehoboth's Jolly Trolley off-season also welcome leashed pups. Pro tip: message the host about pet fees and any breed or size notes before booking so check-in is smooth and your pup is ready to roam.
destateparks.com/pets/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite near Georgetown?
Yes, RV delivery in Georgetown is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's perfect if you're new to RVing or don't want to drive a big rig down Route 1 in summer beach traffic. Many local hosts will deliver, level, and set up the RV at Cape Henlopen, Delaware Seashore, Trap Pond, or private parks like Homestead Campground or Sun Outdoors Rehoboth Bay, then walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees usually run $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location. Filter by Delivery on the listing search, message the host with your campsite address, and you can literally show up with groceries and start the vacation.
destateparks.com/rv-camping/How far can I drive on a Georgetown RV trip?
You have a huge playground from Georgetown thanks to its central spot on the Delmarva Peninsula. Quick drives include Rehoboth Beach (20 minutes), Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes (25 minutes), Ocean City, Maryland (45 minutes), Assateague Island National Seashore with its wild ponies (1 hour), and Chincoteague, Virginia (1 hour 30 minutes). For a bigger RV road trip from Georgetown, Washington, DC sits about 2 hours 30 minutes west, Philadelphia is 2 hours north, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina are about 5 hours south. Mileage policies vary by host (often 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles at $0.30 to $0.45 each), and some listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Check the listing page before booking.
nps.gov/asis/index.htmWhere can I camp with my RV near Georgetown, DE?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Georgetown include Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes (full-hookup sites with ocean access), Delaware Seashore State Park between Dewey and Bethany Beach (oceanfront and bayfront sites), Trap Pond State Park in Laurel (often called Delaware's most scenic campground, tucked under loblolly pines), Killens Pond State Park in Felton, and private options like Homestead Campground right in Georgetown, Sun Outdoors Rehoboth Bay, and Holly Lake Campsites in Millsboro. Delaware State Parks uses a 9-month rolling reservation window through ReserveAmerica, so coastal sites for summer weekends go fast. Insider tip: Trap Pond is the local secret if you want quiet woods and bald cypress paddling without the beach crowds.
destateparks.com/rv-camping/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Georgetown?
Late April through mid-October is prime time, but the sweet spot is May, early June, and September, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s to low 80s°F, ocean water is swimmable, and campground prices drop noticeably after Labor Day. July and August deliver classic beach weather (highs around 85 to 90°F) but also the most humidity, the heaviest Route 1 traffic, and the highest demand at Cape Henlopen and Delaware Seashore. Winter RV camping is possible at year-round state parks like Trap Pond and Cape Henlopen, but expect lows in the upper 20s°F in January. Local tip: aim for the second or third week of September, prime weather and the Rehoboth Boardwalk is still buzzing.
weather.gov/akq/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and Georgetown is honestly one of the easiest spots in the country to learn. Sussex County roads are flat, well-marked, and gentle compared to mountain driving, and most RVezy hosts give a thorough walkthrough at pickup that covers slide-outs, water tanks, propane, generator, and dump procedures. If you'd rather skip city driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup at your campground. First time renting an RV? Start with a Class C motorhome or a travel trailer; they handle more like a large van than a bus. You can also message the host with questions before booking, and RVezy's Help Center has step-by-step guides ready when you are.
fmcsa.dot.gov/safety/driver-safety/cmv-driving-tips-following-too-closelyWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Georgetown trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 113, a dead battery at Trap Pond, or a tow off Coastal Highway is handled with a single phone call. Help can dispatch from nearby hubs in Georgetown, Milford, Salisbury, or Dover. For mechanical questions specific to the rig, message the host directly from the RVezy app since they know their vehicle best. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave the pickup lot and you will feel that much more relaxed cruising the Delmarva back roads.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Georgetown RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate road trips are welcomed and Georgetown's location makes them easy. From here you can roll into Maryland in 15 minutes, Virginia in about an hour, Pennsylvania in 90 minutes, and New Jersey via the Cape May-Lewes Ferry (RVs are permitted with advance ferry reservations). Crossing into Canada is also possible on many listings, but you must confirm with the host before booking since insurance and protection coverage depend on the specific vehicle. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the protection package does not extend there. Popular multi-state routes from Georgetown include the Outer Banks loop, the Shenandoah Valley, and a coastal swing up through Cape May into New England.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/your-tripHow much should I budget for fuel on a Georgetown RV trip?
Fuel is one of your biggest variables, so plan smart. Expect Class C motorhomes to get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A's around 6 to 10 MPG, campervans 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Delaware gasoline prices typically run a few cents below the national average and Sussex County has plentiful fuel stations along US Route 113 and Route 13. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop around the Delaware beaches in a Class C, budget roughly $150 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Georgetown or Seaford before heading to the beach towns, where coastal stations can run 20 to 30 cents higher per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Georgetown?
For peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), book as early as possible. Delaware State Parks uses a 9-month rolling reservation window through ReserveAmerica, which means Cape Henlopen and Delaware Seashore oceanfront sites for July weekends often sell out the morning they open at 10 a.m. Eastern. Trap Pond and Killens Pond fill more slowly and are great backups. For private parks like Homestead Campground or Sun Outdoors Rehoboth Bay, 2 to 3 months ahead is usually enough. Insider tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 9 months before your target date and have your ReserveAmerica account logged in before the booking window opens, that's how locals snag the prime spots.
destateparks.com/reservation-information/What are driving conditions like around Georgetown?
Driving in Sussex County is genuinely RV-friendly: the terrain is flat, the speed limits are reasonable, and there are no mountain passes or tight switchbacks to worry about. The main thing to plan around is summer beach traffic on Route 1 between Lewes and Fenwick Island, which can crawl on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings from June through August. Stick to US Route 113 and Route 9 for smoother sailing, and avoid the Indian River Inlet Bridge during peak rush. Watch for sudden coastal thunderstorms in July and August, and gusty winds at oceanfront campgrounds. Local tip: travel between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays and the back-road shortcuts (Route 24, Route 404) will feel like your own private highway.
deldot.gov/index.shtmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds around Georgetown?
Delaware campgrounds are well-equipped for RV camping in Georgetown and the surrounding area. State parks like Cape Henlopen, Delaware Seashore, Trap Pond, and Killens Pond offer water and electric hookups (some with full-hookup sites), modern restrooms, hot showers, and on-site dump stations. Private parks like Homestead Campground and Sun Outdoors Rehoboth Bay add full hookups, swimming pools, laundry, camp stores, and Wi-Fi. Potable water fills are available at all state park campgrounds, and there's a public dump station at most major locations. Heads-up: outside firewood is not permitted in Delaware State Parks due to invasive pest quarantines, so buy bundles on-site (usually $7 to $10) and you're set for s'mores under the stars.
destateparks.com/rv-camping/What equipment and amenities come standard in a Georgetown RV rental?
Most RV rentals in Georgetown come ready to camp. Expect a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower in Class B, C, and larger units, sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on size, climate control (air conditioning and propane furnace), and seatbelts for all designated passengers. Many hosts also include outdoor chairs, a propane grill, basic linens, and a TV, with generator or solar on most motorhomes. Wi-Fi is rarely built in, so plan to use your phone hotspot; cell coverage is reliable throughout Sussex County on all major carriers. Pro tip: check each listing's amenities list and message the host if you need something specific like a coffee maker or pack-n-play.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Georgetown%2C%20DelawareWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Georgetown often offer helpful add-ons that make your motorhome rental Georgetown experience even smoother: delivery and setup ($2 to $4 per mile), generator hours, bike racks, kayak/paddleboard mounts, linen and kitchen kits ($30 to $75), portable grills, and pet cleaning fees if you're bringing your dog. Mileage policies vary, with most listings offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and overage at $0.30 to $0.45 per mile, though some campervan rental Georgetown options come with unlimited miles. Pickup is usually at the host's address in or near Georgetown, but delivery to Cape Henlopen, Delaware Seashore, or your rental house is widely available. Look for the Festival-Friendly filter if you're heading to the Apple Scrapple Festival or Punkin Chunkin events.
visitdelaware.com/things-to-do/festivals-events/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled through RVezy: you pay securely online when you book, and the host receives funds after your trip starts, so your money is protected end to end. A security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before pickup, with amounts varying by listing. The hold is released after the trip assuming no damage or extra cleaning is needed. To keep things smooth, do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup and dropoff, take photos and video of the interior and exterior, and return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels noted at pickup. That simple habit keeps your deposit return fast and painless.
