Central Delaware has a four-season climate with mild springs, hot and humid summers, temperate falls, and cool winters. The state is affected by seasonally occurring severe weather including winter and spring nor'easters that can drop heavy snow or rain, autumn tropical systems, and spring and summer thunderstorms. Summer is peak season for the nearby beaches, so coastal RV parks fill early and inland sites near Greenwood become useful overflow options.
Spring and early fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with lower humidity, fewer bugs, and easier reservations. Several Delaware state park campgrounds, including Killens Pond, are open year-round, and the campground at Delaware Seashore State Park stays open year-round for self-contained units during winter months.
Primitive-style camping is available 365 days a year at Redden State Forest, north of Georgetown. Winter stays are quiet but bathhouse services and on-site amenities are reduced, and hunting seasons overlap with fall camping on state forestland, so campers should check current regulations before booking.
How to book campgrounds near Greenwood
Delaware State Parks and the Delaware Forest Service use separate reservation systems, and private parks handle their own bookings. Reservations for Killens Pond State Park are made through the Delaware State Parks reservation system operated by ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made a year in advance, online or via the state's reservation call center.
Online reservations for Delaware Forest Service campsites at Redden and Blackbird can be made at de.gov/forestcamping. There is a three-night maximum stay per reservation at these forest sites.
Private parks such as G and R Recreation Campground and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Delaware Beaches take reservations directly through their websites. For summer weekends and holiday periods near the Delaware coast, book several months ahead; last-minute cancellations do occur and can be worth watching.
What to expect on-site

At Killens Pond State Park, all campsites include a picnic table and fire ring with grate, and facilities include clean bathhouses with free hot showers, flush toilets, potable water stations, a dump station, and a camp store at the office. Delaware State Park campgrounds are family campgrounds; group camping is prohibited, and individuals are limited to two sites at any time.

Only tent camping is allowed; pickup campers, travel trailers, and self-propelled motor homes are excluded.
Expect flat terrain, mixed pine and hardwood cover, and mosquitoes in warm months. Cell coverage is generally good along Route 13 but can dip inside forested loops.
