Campgrounds near Lewes, Delaware
Lewes sits at the mouth of Delaware Bay where it meets the Atlantic Ocean, giving RV travelers a compact base with ocean beaches, bayside marshes, and the historic town center all within a short drive. The area is a summer destination for families from the mid-Atlantic corridor, and campgrounds fill early for weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Cape Henlopen State Park anchors the local camping options with a large public campground inside a coastal park covering roughly 7,000 acres. Private RV parks in the surrounding countryside handle overflow demand and longer stays, including Big Oaks Family Campground close to town, Tall Pines Campground Resort and Holly Lake Campsites in the inland pine woods, and Leisure Point Resort on the coastal bays.
Most sites in the region are level and suited to Class C and travel-trailer rigs. Hookup availability varies: state park loops typically offer water and electric with a shared dump station, while the private resorts more often provide full hookups, cable, and Wi-Fi. Renters should confirm site length before booking, since several loops at Cape Henlopen have narrow interior roads.
Things to do near Lewes
Cape Henlopen State Park covers ocean and bay beaches, paved bike paths, a fishing pier, and preserved World War II observation towers. Visitors can swim in the ocean waves, bike through the dunes, fish from the bayside pier, and explore the park's 7,000 acres of coastal environment. The park connects to the Junction and Breakwater Trail, which runs south toward Rehoboth Beach.
Downtown Lewes offers a walkable historic district, kayak rentals on the canal, and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal for day trips across Delaware Bay to New Jersey. Rehoboth Beach and its boardwalk are roughly ten minutes south, and the outlet shopping along Route 1 draws steady traffic on rainy days.
Families with younger kids can add Jungle Jim's water park, mini-golf along the coastal highway, and freshwater swimming at nearby inland state parks.

Peak season runs from late June through Labor Day, when ocean temperatures are warm enough for swimming and the beaches, ferry, and boardwalks are in full operation. Delaware State Parks require a one-week minimum stay during the summer season at Cape Henlopen. At other times of year, reservations for weekend stays must include both Friday and Saturday nights, and holiday weekends require a minimum of three nights. Plan around these rules when booking.
Shoulder seasons, from April through mid-June and again from September into October, bring lighter crowds and mild coastal weather. Fall is often the most pleasant stretch for RV travel, with warm days, cooler nights, and open sites midweek. Water availability on Cape Henlopen campsites during the months of March and November is dependent on the weather, with a frost-free spigot available at the dump station.
Winter is quiet. The Cape Henlopen campground remains open year-round, but expect limited services, cold nights, and occasional coastal storms including Nor'easters.
How to book campgrounds near Lewes
Cape Henlopen State Park uses the Delaware State Parks reservation system, powered by ReserveAmerica. Online reservations are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and may be placed by credit card only. Reservations can also be made by phone through the Delaware State Parks Call Center at 1-877-98-PARKS (1-877-987-2757). Reservations may be made up to one year ahead of time.
Summer weekends at Cape Henlopen sell out well in advance, so book as early as possible. An 18-calendar-day change freeze applies to new reservations, meaning changes, arrival-date modifications, or transfers cannot be made within 18 days of the original booking date.
Private campgrounds around Lewes, including Big Oaks Family Campground, Tall Pines Campground Resort, Holly Lake Campsites, and Leisure Point Resort, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Deposits and cancellation rules vary by property.
What to expect
Cape Henlopen is a working state park campground rather than a resort. Use of generators of any type is prohibited in the park, so plan on electric hookups or battery capacity for overnight power. Slide-outs are not allowed in Loop A even-numbered sites, campground roads are narrow, extra caution is needed when backing in, and it is best to book a site that exceeds the length of the rig.
Outside firewood is discouraged in Delaware State Park campgrounds due to invasive insect concerns, and firewood is available for purchase on site. Only one vehicle per campsite is assigned a pass allowing free entry in and out of the park; all other vehicles must park in the visitors lot and pay entrance fees when re-entering.
Private resorts near Lewes generally allow generators within quiet hours, permit multiple vehicles, and offer amenities such as pools and playgrounds.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lewes%2C%20DelawareDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Lewes, Delaware?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lewes, DE. Delaware does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) for personal RVs, so your standard Class D license covers every motorhome on RVezy, from compact campervans up to 40-foot Class A coaches. You'll need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork to bring to pickup. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly, pair it with your home license, and you're set to cruise Coastal Highway and Route 1 with confidence.
dmv.de.gov/services/driver_services/drivers_license/dr_lic_dl.shtmlWhat protection and roadside assistance is included with my Lewes RV rental?
Every RV rental in Lewes booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head to the Cape May Lewes Ferry queue or Cape Henlopen knowing you are covered. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV, and you choose the coverage level that fits your comfort during checkout (the host does not pick this for you). If you get a flat on Route 1 or need a jump at the campground, one phone call gets help dispatched any hour of the day. It is the kind of safety net that turns a first-time Lewes RV trip from nerve-wracking into genuinely fun.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Lewes trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental in Lewes, not the individual host, and there is a grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility depends on how far ahead of your trip you cancel. If a host cancels your booking, RVezy will help you find a comparable replacement or provide a full refund. Review the current cancellation terms on RVezy before you confirm so you know exactly where you stand. Tip: book early for July 4th fireworks on Lewes Beach, then relax knowing you understand the policy upfront.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I find a pet-friendly RV rental in Lewes for my dog?
Yes, Lewes is one of the most dog-loving beach towns on the Mid-Atlantic, and finding a pet-friendly RV rental in Lewes is easy on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you will see motorhomes and travel trailers from hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Once you arrive, take your dog to Cape Henlopen's off-season off-leash beach hours (generally outside the lifeguarded summer season), walk the Junction and Breakwater Trail, or grab a patio table at a dog-friendly Lewes brewery. Tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee, and pack a towel for sandy paws after Herring Point sunsets.
destateparks.com/PetsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Lewes?
Yes, RV delivery in Lewes is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow a trailer or drive a motorhome directly to Cape Henlopen State Park, a private campground in Rehoboth, or a rental driveway in Lewes Beach, then level it, hook up water and 30/50-amp power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter when you search to see hosts offering this service and their per-mile delivery fee. Tip: delivery is a great choice for families flying into Philadelphia or BWI who would rather rent a car than drive a 30-foot rig down Route 1.
destateparks.com/Beaches/CapeHenlopenHow does mileage work and how far can I drive from Lewes?
Most Lewes hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day) with additional miles available at a small per-mile rate, and some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. That is plenty for exploring the Delaware coast: Rehoboth Beach is about 7 miles south, Bethany Beach about 22 miles, Ocean City, MD about 35 miles, Assateague Island National Seashore about 50 miles, and Chincoteague, VA roughly 80 miles. Planning a bigger RV road trip from Lewes up to Cape May via the ferry or down to Virginia Beach? Filter for unlimited-mileage listings on RVezy and you can wander without watching the odometer.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lewes%2C%20DelawareWhere are the best campgrounds near Lewes for RV camping?
Lewes has excellent RV camping options. Cape Henlopen State Park Campground is the standout: thousands of acres of dunes and beach, water and electric hookups at RV sites, a camp store, and bike trails right into downtown Lewes. About 15 minutes south, Delaware Seashore State Park sits on a barrier island between the ocean and Rehoboth Bay with full hookups available at many sites. Sun Outdoors Rehoboth Bay (formerly Massey's Landing) offers waterfront sites and a marina. Big Oaks Family Campground in Rehoboth is a privately run option with a pool. Tip: Cape Henlopen books up many months in advance for summer weekends, so reserve as soon as your dates are confirmed.
destateparks.com/Beaches/CapeHenlopenWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Lewes?
Lewes is a four-season RV destination, but the sweet spots are May, June, September, and early October. Summer highs sit in the mid-80s with humid 70-degree nights, perfect for ocean swimming but also the busiest and priciest stretch. Shoulder seasons bring 65 to 75-degree days, fewer crowds at Cape Henlopen, and lower rental rates. Winter is mild (40s by day, 30s at night) and Cape Henlopen's campground operates much of the year, so an off-season Lewes RV trip can be a quiet, beautiful surprise. Tip: late October brings the Sea Witch Festival in nearby Rehoboth, a fun shoulder-season weekend when restaurants are still in full swing.
weather.gov/phi/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Lewes?
You'll do great, and Lewes is one of the friendlier places on the East Coast for first time renting an RV. The host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup: how to level the rig, hook up water and electric, dump tanks, operate the awning, and run the propane. Lewes itself has flat, easy roads, the only tricky bits are the height-restricted underpass on Savannah Road (watch for the 12'6" clearance signs) and tight historic streets near Second Street, which you'll want to avoid in a big Class A. Stick to Route 1, Route 9, and Cape Henlopen Drive and you're golden. Pro tip: ask the host to text you a short video of dump-station procedure so you can rewatch it on day three.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never stranded. Every RV rental in Lewes booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 1, a dead battery at Cape Henlopen, or a tow off Coastal Highway is one phone call away. The roadside team handles tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Your host is also a quick text away for quirks specific to their rig. RVezy's support team backs you up before, during, and after the trip. Tip: save the roadside number to your phone on pickup day, you may never need it, but you will feel calmer.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lewes RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate road trips are part of the fun of an RV road trip from Lewes. Most hosts allow travel throughout the continental United States, including popular runs north to Cape May via the Cape May Lewes Ferry (the ferry accepts RVs, with advance reservations recommended), down to Chincoteague and Virginia Beach, or up the Delmarva to Philadelphia. Travel to Canada may be allowed with advance host approval and could affect protection coverage, so confirm in writing through RVezy messages before you book. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend across that border. Tip: book the ferry's oversized-vehicle lane online well ahead for summer crossings.
cmlf.com/What kind of fuel mileage should I expect and how much will gas cost?
Budgeting fuel for your Lewes RV trip is easy once you know the ballparks. Campervans and Class B rigs typically get 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes run 8 to 12 mpg, and bigger Class A coaches average 6 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but drop your tow vehicle's mileage by 30 to 40 percent. Delaware gas prices tend to sit slightly below the national average thanks to lower state fuel taxes, and there are convenient stations with RV-friendly pumps along Route 1 in Lewes and Five Points. Pro tip: top off in Delaware before crossing into New Jersey or Maryland, you'll usually save 20 to 40 cents per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lewes?
For summer weekends at Cape Henlopen State Park, book as soon as Delaware State Parks opens its reservation window, which is up to 11 months in advance through the official reservation system. Sites sell out quickly for July 4th, Labor Day, and Sea Witch Festival weekend in late October. Private parks like Big Oaks and Sun Outdoors Rehoboth Bay typically open reservations roughly 12 months out and fill 3 to 6 months ahead for prime dates. Midweek and shoulder-season nights are far easier and often available a week out. Tip: if Cape Henlopen is full, check daily, cancellations pop up regularly and inventory updates in real time.
destateparks.com/Beaches/CapeHenlopenWhat are the local driving conditions like around Lewes?
Lewes driving is refreshingly easy for an RV. Route 1 (Coastal Highway) is wide, flat, and built for vacation traffic, with generous shoulders and clear signage to Cape Henlopen. The main caution is summer Saturday turnover traffic between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when Route 1 backs up south of Five Points, plan your arrivals for weekday afternoons or early mornings to glide through. Coastal storms can bring brief flooding to low-lying roads like Pilottown Road and parts of Lewes Beach, so check forecasts before you move the rig. Avoid the narrow historic streets of downtown Lewes (Second Street, Market Street) in anything larger than a campervan. Pro tip: use the New Road bypass between Lewes and Rehoboth to skip the worst summer congestion.
deldot.gov/traveler.shtmlWhat hookups and amenities do campgrounds near Lewes offer?
You will find solid infrastructure for RV camping near Lewes. Cape Henlopen State Park offers water and electric hookups at RV sites, plus a dump station for registered campers (sewer hookups are not provided at individual sites, and generator use is restricted). Delaware Seashore State Park offers full hookups including sewer at many sites. Private parks like Sun Outdoors Rehoboth Bay and Big Oaks typically include full hookups, pools, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Tip: bring a 25-foot fresh-water hose and both 30-amp and 50-amp adapters, sites are spacious but utility pedestals can sit at the back corner of the pad.
destateparks.com/Beaches/CapeHenlopenWhat features and amenities will I find inside a Lewes RV rental?
Expect a fully equipped home on wheels. Most motorhome rentals in Lewes come with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (great for family RV trip Lewes adventures sleeping 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave, three-burner stove, and oven, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, roof and dash AC, furnace, propane, and a generator on most Class A and C rigs. Many include outdoor TVs, awnings, beach chairs, and Bluetooth stereos. Wi-Fi is usually BYO hotspot, Verizon and T-Mobile both have strong Lewes coverage. Pro tip: check the listing's "sleeps" count against legal seatbelts, only seatbelted positions are road-legal for passengers on Delaware highways.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and pickup options do Lewes hosts offer?
Lewes hosts make trips easy with optional add-ons priced individually in each listing. Common extras include beach chairs and umbrellas, bikes and kayaks, linen and kitchen kits, portable grills, generators, propane refills, and pre-stocked firewood. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or around Lewes, Milton, or Rehoboth, and many offer flexible afternoon pickup with a late-morning drop-off the following day. Mileage allowances and pet fees are shown on the listing before you book. Tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen kit into one quote and your motorhome rental Lewes experience becomes practically turn-key, just bring food and flip-flops.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lewes%2C%20DelawareHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is handled securely inside RVezy, never in cash to the host. When you book, you pay your trip total (rental fee, protection plan, taxes, and any add-ons) by credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup. The deposit amount varies by rig and is released after drop-off, provided the RV is returned in the same condition with the agreed fuel and tank levels. Tip: take a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, it is a 60-second habit that keeps the deposit return smooth and makes every Lewes RV trip end on a high note.
