Campgrounds and RV parks near Montgomery, GA

Savannah's historic district anchors most itineraries, with cobblestone streets, squares, and River Street a short drive from any campground in the area. Tybee Island beaches sit about an hour east, and Fort Pulaski National Monument guards the Savannah River mouth. Outdoor plans center on the state parks. Skidaway Island offers a network of 6 miles of walking trails and boardwalks through maritime forest, and the 2-mile Big Ferry Trail is the best bet for spotting resident alligators. Fort McAllister adds fishing from the dock and pier, two boat ramps providing access to Redbird Creek and the Ogeechee River, hiking trails, paddling, and biking with rentals available. Families staying at private resorts often use them as base camps. CreekFire Resort provides pool amenities and shuttle-friendly access to downtown attractions, and Red Gate Campground and RV Resort offers on-site recreation for guests who prefer to stay put between trips into the city.

Coastal Georgia has a long camping season, but each season brings trade-offs. Spring, from March to May, is heralded by blooming flowers and a mild climate, with average temperatures ranging from around 58°F in March to 76°F in May, and monthly rainfall from about 49 mm in March to 64 mm in April. Spring weekends fill weeks out at the state parks. The summer months from June through August turn Savannah into a hot and humid city with temperatures ranging from about 82°F in June to 90°F in July, and precipitation rises sharply from about 50 mm in May to 86 mm in June, hitting the annual high of 110 mm in August. Afternoon thunderstorms are routine, and biting insects intensify in the marsh. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak risk in August and September; RV travelers should track NOAA and National Hurricane Center advisories. Precipitation drops through October and November to about 60 mm and 37 mm, making autumn the driest season in Savannah. Winter is reasonably mild, with temperatures hovering between about 49°F and 62°F from December through February. A partial campground renovation at Skidaway Island State Park began in early 2026 and is expected to last about one year, so confirm loop availability before booking.

Expect classic Lowcountry conditions: shaded sites under live oaks and Spanish moss, tidal marsh views, and humid air most of the year. Fort McAllister's shaded campground offers 67 sites for tents, trailers, and RVs with electric and water hookups, accommodating rigs up to 80 feet, with sites nestled among live oaks and Spanish moss and bordered by tidal Redbird Creek. Skidaway Island has nearly 90 tent and RV campsites plus 3 camper cabins and 3 group campsites, all with electrical hookups, and campground amenities include restrooms with showers, bike rentals, picnic areas, two playgrounds, laundry facilities, and an interpretive center. Wildlife is close, with deer, fiddler crabs, raccoon, egrets, and other species commonly seen in the parks, so campers should secure food and close windows overnight. Insects, especially mosquitoes and gnats, are heavy from late spring through early fall; bring repellent and screens. Cell service is generally usable near Savannah but can be spotty inside wooded loops. Private resorts typically offer WiFi and on-site amenities, while state parks are quieter and more basic.
