Campgrounds near Skidaway Island
Skidaway Island sits in the salt marshes and maritime forest of coastal Georgia, roughly a 20-minute drive from downtown Savannah. The area borders Skidaway Narrows, part of Georgia's Intracoastal Waterway, and RV travelers use it as a quiet base for exploring Savannah's historic district, Tybee Island beaches, and Civil War sites along the Ogeechee River.
The closest campground is Skidaway Island State Park, roughly 588 acres of maritime forest, tidal creeks, and salt marshes near the Skidaway River. About twenty miles south, Fort Mcallister Historic Park offers a second Georgia state park option on tidal Redbird Creek near the Ogeechee River. Note that a partial campground renovation at Skidaway Island State Park began February 2, 2026 and is scheduled to last about one year, so site availability there may be reduced during that window.
Private RV parks in the greater Savannah area include Red Gate Campground and RV Resort and Biltmore RV Park inland toward the city, and Rivers End Campground and RV Park out on Tybee Island near the beach. Together they cover most trip styles, from wooded state-park sites to full-service resorts with pools and laundry.
Things to do near Skidaway Island
At Skidaway Island State Park, about six miles of nature trails and boardwalks wind through live oaks, maritime forest, and salt marsh. An interpretive center on site houses a giant ground sloth replica, birding station, nature exhibits, and a reptile room, which makes it a strong pick for families with kids. The park also offers bicycle rentals, two playgrounds, and outdoor fitness equipment.
At Fort Mcallister Historic Park, visitors can tour a well-preserved Confederate earthwork fortification from the Civil War, on the banks of the Ogeechee River. The park has a boat ramp and fishing dock on Redbird Creek, nature trails through maritime forest, and saltwater fishing for redfish, flounder, and sea trout.
Off-park day trips are easy: Savannah's River Street and Forsyth Park are a short drive, and Tybee Island's beach and lighthouse are under an hour from Skidaway.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV camping on Skidaway Island. Daytime highs sit in the 70s Fahrenheit, humidity is manageable, and biting insects are lighter than in high summer. Wildflowers and migrating birds pass through the marshes in spring, and fall brings cooler nights and clearer skies after the peak-storm months.
Summer is hot, humid, and stormy, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and the highest mosquito and gnat pressure. The coastal setting tends to be a little more pleasant than inland Savannah thanks to sea breezes, but summer months are still busy, especially on weekends, so reservations well in advance are wise. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and peaks in August and September, occasionally forcing coastal park closures.
Winter is the quiet season. Days are mild, hard freezes are uncommon on the coast, and both state parks stay open year-round, making it a good window for snowbirds who want low-density campgrounds and easy access to Savannah's off-season attractions.
How to book campgrounds near Skidaway Island
Georgia state park sites at Skidaway Island State Park and Fort Mcallister Historic Park are booked through the state's ReserveAmerica system. Reservations are available up to 13 months in advance for out-of-state visitors, and 14 months in advance for Georgia residents, whose address is verified at check-in. A limited number of sites are held on a first-come, first-served basis, but planning ahead is safer, especially for weekends and holidays. Most reservations require a 50 percent deposit at booking, with the balance due at check-in.
A ParkPass is required for all vehicles and is not included in the reservation fee. Annual ParkPasses are available for frequent visitors.
Private parks including Red Gate Campground and RV Resort, Biltmore RV Park, and Rivers End Campground and RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and typically require a deposit at booking.
What to expect on site
State park campgrounds around Skidaway Island are shaded and wooded. Sites sit under live oaks draped with Spanish moss, most RV sites offer electric and water hookups, some include full hookups, and camper cabins and yurts are available for rent at Skidaway Island State Park. Each site typically includes a fire ring, grill, and picnic table, and campgrounds have modern bathhouses with flush toilets, hot showers, laundry, and a dump station.
Interior roads at Skidaway Island State Park are paved but some loops are narrow and can be bumpy from tree roots, so larger rigs should check site length before booking. Cell service is generally usable across the island and near Richmond Hill.
Pets are welcome on leashes no longer than six feet but are not allowed in buildings or swimming areas, and drone use is prohibited in Georgia state parks. Expect mosquitoes and no-see-ums near the marsh, particularly at dusk in warm months.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Skidaway%20Island%2C%20GeorgiaWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Skidaway Island, GA?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Skidaway Island. The Georgia Department of Driver Services confirms that a standard Class C license covers any recreational vehicle used for personal travel, regardless of weight, so no Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement is required for the Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, or travel trailers you'll find on RVezy. You'll need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before your trip and you're set to cruise down Diamond Causeway.
dds.georgia.gov/license-classesWhat protection is included with my Skidaway Island RV rental?
Every Skidaway Island RV trip booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you can head over the Diamond Causeway with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your rental, which is reassuring when you are navigating tight oak-lined campsites at Skidaway Island State Park. You choose your level of coverage during checkout (not the host), so you can pick what feels right for your trip. It is not traditional insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection. Add the included roadside assistance and you are covered from pickup to drop-off, day or night.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Skidaway Island RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates without stress. After that window, your refund depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. The full details live on the RVezy Help Center and customer support can walk you through them anytime. Pro tip: lock in your dates early for peak Savannah events like the St. Patrick's Day parade in March, then relax knowing you have flexibility built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Skidaway Island RV trip?
Absolutely. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Skidaway Island are just a filter-click away on RVezy. Toggle Pet-Friendly on the search page and you will see hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots, with any pet fees listed right in the listing. Once you are here, leashed dogs are welcome at Skidaway Island State Park campsites and on every hiking trail, including the boardwalks through the salt marsh. Tybee Island has a designated leashed-dog area, but check current city rules before heading to the main beach since fines can be steep. Pro tip: pack extra fresh water; the coastal heat and sandy paws make hydration a must for your pup.
gastateparks.org/SkidawayIslandCan the RV be delivered to my campsite on Skidaway Island?
Yes, RV delivery in Skidaway Island is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who would rather skip towing a trailer over the Diamond Causeway. Many local hosts will drop the RV right at your site at Skidaway Island State Park, Red Gate Campground & RV Resort, or CreekFire Resort, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter to see which hosts offer it and how they price by distance. Pro tip: ask your host to include a propane top-off and a campsite essentials kit so you can roll in, unpack, and head straight to dinner in downtown Savannah.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Skidaway%20Island%2C%20GeorgiaHow far can I drive my Skidaway Island RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have plenty of road to explore. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage allowance, and many Skidaway Island hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some listing RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. The included miles easily cover the 18-mile run to downtown Savannah, the 30-mile hop to Tybee Island, or a day trip to Fort Pulaski National Monument. Planning to push farther, like Charleston (about 110 miles) or Jacksonville (about 140 miles)? Message the host through the listing to either upgrade to unlimited mileage or pre-purchase extra miles, which is almost always cheaper than paying overage fees at the end.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Skidaway%20Island%2C%20GeorgiaWhere are the best campgrounds near Skidaway Island for RV camping?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Skidaway Island start with Skidaway Island State Park, which has 87 spacious sites tucked under live oaks with water and electric hookups and can accommodate larger RVs. Just across the marsh, River's End Campground & RV Park on Tybee Island puts you within walking distance of the beach. Red Gate Campground & RV Resort sits about 20 minutes from Skidaway, while CreekFire Resort in west Savannah offers a pool, lazy river, and full hookups. Fort McAllister State Park, about 35 miles south, is a quieter Civil War-era pick. Pro tip: book Skidaway Island State Park 3 to 4 months ahead through the Georgia State Parks reservation system for spring and fall weekends.
gastateparks.org/SkidawayIslandWhen is the best time to visit Skidaway Island in an RV?
Spring and fall are pure magic for a Skidaway Island RV trip. From mid-March through May, daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s to low 80s, the azaleas pop in Savannah, and the gnats have not hit full strength yet. Late September through early November brings another sweet stretch with highs in the 70s and far fewer mosquitoes than summer. Winters are mild (rarely below 40F at night), making RV camping Skidaway Island a smart shoulder-season escape from northern snow. Summers are hot and humid with highs in the low 90s, so if you visit June through August, plan early-morning hikes and lean on ocean breezes plus that powerful RV air conditioning.
weather.gov/chs/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Skidaway Island?
Yes, and the area is genuinely friendly for first time renting an RV. The roads onto Skidaway Island via the Diamond Causeway are flat and wide, with no mountain grades or tricky switchbacks anywhere on the Georgia coast. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, and the dump tanks, and they are a quick text away during your trip. Choose a Class C motorhome or campervan for your first run if a Class A feels big. Pro tip: if highway nerves are a concern, book a host who offers RV delivery in Skidaway Island so the rig is already parked and set up when you arrive.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002544354-For-rentersWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on US-80 to Tybee or a stuck slide at Skidaway Island State Park is one phone call away from help. Your host is your first text for quick questions like how to reset the inverter, and they usually answer within minutes. For anything bigger, RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip to coordinate solutions. Local repair shops and tire centers cluster along Abercorn Street and Highway 204, about 15 minutes from the island. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV systems during your walkthrough so you can reference them later if anything pops up.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best RV road trip routes from Skidaway Island?
An RV road trip from Skidaway Island opens up the entire Southeast coast. Head about 30 minutes east to Tybee Island for beach days at River's End Campground, or drive about 110 miles north on I-95 to historic Charleston, SC for cobblestone streets and shrimp and grits. Jekyll Island and the Golden Isles sit about 90 miles south, with Jekyll Island Campground offering shaded sites near the ocean. Push about 140 miles south to Jacksonville, FL or about 240 miles north to the Outer Banks for a bigger loop. You can take your rental into South Carolina or Florida, but travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy bookings. Cross-border Canada trips need host approval; just message before booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsHow much should I budget for fuel on my Skidaway Island RV trip?
Fuel is easy to plan for around here. Georgia gas prices typically run close to or slightly below the national average, with diesel usually 80 cents to $1 higher per gallon than regular. Travel trailers do not burn their own fuel, just your tow vehicle's, while a Class C motorhome typically gets 8 to 12 miles per gallon and a Class B campervan stretches to 16 to 20 mpg. For a long weekend driving 200 miles around Savannah, Tybee, and Hilton Head, budget roughly $80 to $120 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in nearby Pooler off I-95, where prices often run 10 to 20 cents cheaper than stations closer to downtown.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near Skidaway Island?
Book early and you will have your pick of the best sites. Skidaway Island State Park's 87 campsites are reservable up to 13 months in advance through the Georgia State Parks reservation system, and the prime spring (March to May) and fall (October to November) weekends regularly sell out 3 to 6 months ahead. Summer and winter weekdays are easier and can often be snagged 2 to 4 weeks out. River's End on Tybee and Fort McAllister State Park follow similar booking windows. Pro tip: if your dates are sold out, set up a cancellation alert; with 87 sites in constant rotation, openings pop up almost daily, especially Sunday and Monday nights.
gastateparks.org/SkidawayIslandWhat are local driving conditions like on and around Skidaway Island?
Skidaway Island driving is about as RV-friendly as it gets on the Georgia coast. The main way on or off is the Diamond Causeway, a flat bridge with no height or weight restrictions, and there are no mountains, tunnels, or low overpasses anywhere on your route. Inside Skidaway Island State Park, the campground roads are paved with a few tight turns near the inner loop, so take it slow and watch for low oak branches when picking your site. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can roll in fast off the Atlantic; pull over and wait them out. Pro tip: avoid US-17 through downtown Savannah at 5 PM since the Talmadge Bridge backs up, and use I-516 or Truman Parkway instead.
dot.ga.gov/DS/TravelWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds around Skidaway Island?
Coastal Georgia campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable Skidaway Island RV trip. Skidaway Island State Park offers 30 and 50 amp electric, water hookups at every site, clean bathhouses with laundry, a dump station, a playground, an interpretive center, and miles of hiking and biking trails. River's End on Tybee adds full hookups and walkable beach access, while CreekFire Resort includes a pool and lazy river. You will find a dump station and potable water fill at the state park, plus a Publix grocery store within a short drive. Pro tip: bring a sewer hose support and a 25-foot water hose; some Skidaway sites have hookups set back from the pad.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Skidaway%20Island%2C%20GeorgiaHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Skidaway Island, GA?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through RVezy: no cash, no awkward transfers with strangers. You will pay your booking total securely on the platform when you reserve, which covers the rental, your chosen protection plan, and any add-ons. Hosts collect a refundable security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) through RVezy, usually as a pre-authorization hold close to pickup, and it is released after drop-off assuming no damage. Pro tip: do a thorough walk-around with your host at pickup and snap timestamped photos of any existing scratches or dings on the rig before you head out to Skidaway Island State Park, that single habit prevents the vast majority of deposit disputes.
