Campgrounds and RV parks near Talahi Island, GA

The Savannah Historic District draws most visitors with its squares, house museums, and River Street waterfront. East on U.S. 80, Tybee Island offers public beaches, the Tybee Island Light Station, and Fort Pulaski National Monument, a Civil War brick fortress managed by the National Park Service. Skidaway Island State Park borders Skidaway Narrows, part of Georgia's Intracoastal Waterway, with hiking trails through maritime forest and salt marsh leading to a boardwalk and observation tower where visitors can watch for deer, fiddler crabs, raccoon, egrets, and migrating birds, plus a nature center with exhibits and a reptile room. Fishing charters, dolphin tours, and shrimp-boat cruises run out of Tybee, Thunderbolt, and Lazaretto Creek. Families staying in RVs often split days between beach time on Tybee and walking tours in downtown Savannah.

Coastal Georgia has a humid subtropical climate with hot, wet summers and short mild winters. Spring, roughly mid-February through May, is the most popular window: temperatures are comfortable, humidity is lower, and Savannah's azaleas and dogwoods bloom. St. Patrick's Day weekend in Savannah is one of the largest celebrations on the East Coast and books out area campgrounds months in advance. Summer brings daily highs in the 90s Fahrenheit, high humidity, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. It is also Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June through November and peaks in August and September; RV travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and confirm park evacuation policies before booking. Fall is a second peak, with cooler evenings and lower rainfall by mid-October. Winter camping is viable at coastal parks that stay open year-round, though overnight lows can dip into the 30s Fahrenheit and freezing temperatures happen sporadically at night from November until March, with Savannah averaging about 21 frosty nights a year. Verify site availability before booking, as loop closures for maintenance do occur.

Sites at Skidaway Island State Park sit under live oaks and Spanish moss, with electric and water at each site, sewer at some RV sites, and three bathhouses that include laundry. Roads inside the park handle standard RVs and trailers. Private parks closer to Savannah and on Tybee generally offer full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi, with pools at some resorts. Sites can be tighter than state-park loops, and shade varies. Coastal humidity, biting insects (mosquitoes, gnats, no-see-ums), and afternoon storms are normal from late spring through early fall, so bring repellent and awning tie-downs. Cell service is generally strong across Chatham County. Grocery, fuel, and propane are available along U.S. 80 and in the nearby Whitemarsh and Wilmington Island shopping areas.
