Campgrounds and RV parks near Thunderbolt, GA

Thunderbolt is a small riverside town on the Wilmington River, about five miles east of downtown Savannah and roughly a half-hour drive from Tybee Island beaches. Its position on the Intracoastal Waterway makes it a practical base for RV travelers who want quick access to coastal marshes, historic Savannah, and the Atlantic coast without staying in the city core. Most campgrounds serving Thunderbolt sit within a 20 to 30 minute drive. Savannah experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot summers and cool winters, with wetter conditions during the summer months. Skidaway Island State Park offers the closest state-park camping, set among maritime forest, tidal creeks, and salt marshes along Georgia's Intracoastal Waterway. Red Gate Campground and RV Resort and Biltmore RV Park provide private-park options closer to town, while Rivers End Campground and RV Park places RVers within walking distance of Tybee Island's beach. Hardeeville RV-Thomas Parks and Sites, just across the state line in South Carolina, adds a quieter option for travelers routing along I-95. Together these parks cover state-run, private-resort, and beach-adjacent styles of coastal Georgia camping.

Skidaway Island State Park accepts reservations through the ReserveAmerica system used by Georgia State Parks. Book as early as possible for spring weekends, holidays, and any Tybee-adjacent dates, when coastal state-park sites fill fastest. Georgia State Parks generally allow reservations up to 13 months in advance. Private parks including Red Gate Campground and RV Resort, Biltmore RV Park, Rivers End Campground and RV Park, and Hardeeville RV-Thomas Parks and Sites take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Rivers End on Tybee Island is especially competitive during summer and spring break, so lock in dates months in advance. Confirm rig-length limits, hookup type, and any pet or check-in rules at the time of booking.
