Campgrounds and RV parks near De Soto, IA

Cycling is the headline activity. The Raccoon River Valley Trail is a nearly 90 mile paved loop, non-motorized trail passing through 14 Iowa communities, and it runs through Adel and Waukee within a short drive of De Soto. Anglers and paddlers can access the North Raccoon River from town parks in Adel and Redfield, including a kayak and canoe put-in just south of the Dallas County Fairgrounds. Families typically pair campground time with day trips into the Des Moines metro. Popular stops include Living History Farms in Urbandale, Blank Park Zoo, Adventureland in Altoona, and the Iowa State Capitol. Madison County's covered bridges and John Wayne's birthplace in Winterset are roughly a half-hour south. On-site amenities vary. Des Moines West KOA Holiday offers a stocked pond, heated pool, mini golf, jumping pillow, and organized activities, while Timberline features a pool, cabins, catch-and-release pond, and shaded sites geared to families.

Central Iowa has a humid continental climate with sharp seasonal swings, cold snowy winters, and warm humid summers with frequent thunderstorms. Most private campgrounds run a spring-to-fall season, and travelers should plan around that window unless a park stays open year-round. Spring brings wildflowers and heavier rain, with severe thunderstorm and tornado risk peaking in May and June. Summer is warm and humid, and it drives peak occupancy for weekends, holidays, RAGBRAI week, and the Iowa State Fair in August. Book several months ahead for those dates. Fall delivers cooler nights, fewer crowds, and reliable foliage color through mid-October. Winter camping options are limited. Des Moines West KOA Holiday is now open year-round, with a caution that Iowa weather can be unpredictable and campers should prepare for ice, snow, and extremely cold temperatures. Timberline Campground runs an April through early November season, and Dallas County Fairgrounds Campground operates roughly early April through late October.

Terrain around De Soto is rolling farmland cut by the North Raccoon River. Sites at private campgrounds are typically gravel or grass pads with full or partial hookups. Timberline accommodates RVs up to 60 feet with full hookups for electric, water, and sewer, and the layout ranges from level gravel pull-throughs near the entrance to forested and hilly sites deeper into the property. Fairground camping is more utilitarian. Dallas County Fairgrounds uses a self-pay station, sites are pretty flat, and there are unisex bathroom stalls with private lockable showers, but sites sit close together and event nights can be loud. Bring earplugs if racing weekends overlap your stay. Summer humidity, mosquitoes, and pop-up thunderstorms are normal. Pack layers, a surge protector, and leveling blocks, and confirm any check-in cutoffs before arrival.
