Campgrounds and RV parks near Dexter, IA

Activity concentrates on nearby state and county parks, the Raccoon River Valley Trail, and Madison County's covered bridges. The Raccoon River Valley Trail features 89 miles of paved multi-use trail, including a 72-mile loop, and connects 14 central Iowa communities, with Adel serving as a trailhead close to the Dallas County Fairgrounds Campground. At Springbrook State Park, roughly 12 miles of trails wind through timber and prairie, connecting the park with the Conservation Education Center. Trails also reach small ponds, the Middle Raccoon River, and the park's 17-acre lake, where anglers fish for crappie, largemouth bass and bluegill. Swimming is available at the park's sand beach. South of the interstate, Pammel State Park sits along the Middle River in Madison County. The Dexter area also carries historical interest, from President Harry S. Truman's 1948 visit for the National Plowing Match to the former Dexfield Park site.

Central Iowa has a strongly seasonal climate, and campground availability follows it closely. Springbrook State Park's campground is closed from November 1 through March 31, and it is 100 percent reservable, with peak season running May 1 through October 15 and off-peak windows in April and the second half of October. Statewide, all Iowa state park campsites move to walk-in only from November 1 through March 31 due to unpredictable winter weather. County and private parks generally follow a similar April-through-October pattern, though a few private operators near the interstate open earlier or stay open later. Sites at the Dallas County Fairgrounds can be tight during the Dallas County Fair in mid-July and around local race weekends. Summer brings warm, humid weather, frequent thunderstorms, and the busiest booking windows around holidays and Winterset's Covered Bridge Festival in October. Spring and fall shoulder seasons offer cooler nights and fewer crowds, though April campers should be prepared for wet ground, variable temperatures, and no guarantee that showers, water, or dump stations are open yet.

Terrain around Dexter is gently rolling farm country with wooded river valleys. Sites at private campgrounds along the I-80 corridor tend to be flat and open, while Springbrook offers a mix of shaded and open sites in timber. Interstate 80 is close by, so campgrounds nearest the highway carry some road noise; travelers looking for quieter stays generally head to Springbrook. Hookups vary by park. Private parks like Des Moines West KOA Holiday and Timberline RV Campground typically offer 30 and 50 amp service, full hookups, pull-through sites, laundry, showers, and a pool. Springbrook offers non-electric and electric campsites, modern restrooms and showers, a sanitary dump station, and a camp store open weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Pack for mosquitoes in summer, bring layers for spring and fall nights, and use locally sourced firewood to help prevent the spread of emerald ash borer and other invasive pests.
