Campgrounds and RV parks near Earlham, IA

The covered bridges of Madison County are the region's headline attraction, along with the John Wayne Birthplace and Museum in nearby Winterset. Pammel State Park south of Winterset offers hiking on limestone bluffs and a rare road tunnel, and campers staying at Shady Brook Camping and RV Adventures, LLC can reach Pammel State Park and the historic covered bridges within a short drive. Family-oriented on-site activities are concentrated at Des Moines West KOA Holiday, which features a seasonal swimming pool open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, paddle boats on the pond, a recreation activity center with daily programming, and on-site Hunt Brothers Pizza and Wings. The North Raccoon River near Adel is popular for fishing and kayaking, and downtown Des Moines is roughly a 30-minute drive east for museums, sports, and the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

Central Iowa has four distinct seasons, and the practical camping window for most RV travelers runs from April through October. Shady Brook Camping and RV Adventures lists an April 1 to October 31 season, while the KOA operates year-round. Spring brings green pastures and occasional strong thunderstorms, and shoulder-season nights can still drop near freezing into early May. Water hookups at many private parks are shut off during hard freezes, so early-spring arrivals should verify service status. Summer is peak season. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and the Iowa State Fair in August fill quickly. Humidity and severe-weather risk both peak in June and July, so a weather radio or phone alerts are worth having on hand. Fall offers cool nights, harvest scenery, and lower demand, with foliage typically peaking in mid-October. The KOA runs themed Halloween weekends in the fall, and those dates fill quickly. Winter camping is limited: Des Moines West KOA Holiday stays open year-round, but many other local parks close or reduce services once temperatures drop.

Terrain around Earlham is gently rolling farmland with scattered timber along creeks. Shady Brook Camping and RV Adventures sits on flat ground with open spaces, mature trees, and the year-round Bear Creek running through the property. Sites at most local parks are level, and shade varies considerably from one campground to the next. Hookups and rig capacity are generally strong at the larger parks. Des Moines West KOA Holiday offers pull-through and back-in RV sites with full hookups, deluxe cabins with baths and kitchens, glamping tents, and tent sites, plus Wi-Fi, laundry, and a Kampstore. Shady Brook provides 30 and 50 amp electric, water, a dump station, showers, restrooms, and a pool. Cell coverage across the major carriers is reliable near I-80 but can weaken on rural county roads. Expect quiet nights, farm equipment on secondary roads during planting and harvest, and highway noise at campgrounds closest to I-80.
