RV camping near Stuart, Iowa
Stuart sits along Interstate 80 in west-central Iowa, roughly 40 miles west of Des Moines, which makes it a practical stopover for RV travelers crossing the state and a workable base for exploring Guthrie, Dallas, Adair, and Madison counties. The surrounding landscape is rolling farmland cut by the Middle Raccoon River, with several state park lakes and county recreation areas within an hour's drive.
Campground options range from private RV parks to state-run lakeside sites. Shady Brook Camping and RV Adventures, LLC is a nearby private RV park, while Des Moines West KOA Holiday sits east along I-80 for travelers wanting standardized amenities. For state park camping, Springbrook State Park encompasses 930 acres of rolling hills, mature timber, a small lake and abundant wildlife, with most of the buildings constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Dallas County Fairgrounds Campground in nearby Adel offers utility hookups and event-adjacent sites, and Green Valley State Park sits approximately three miles north of the town of Creston to the south.
Most sites in the area are drive-in and RV-friendly, though state park loops mix electric and non-electric sites.
Things to do around Stuart
Water recreation anchors most trips. Green Valley Lake offers fishing for walleye, bluegill, channel catfish and more, two ADA accessible fishing piers on the north and south shorelines, boating, and a sandy beach for swimming. Green Valley also serves as a base camp for anglers working four area lakes within 10 miles of each other, and the fishery holds largemouth bass, crappies, bluegill, walleyes and channel catfish.
On land, Springbrook has approximately 12 miles of trails that can either challenge athletic ability or provide a casual stroll through the timber and prairie areas. Green Valley has almost 10 miles of trails winding through wetland areas around the fringes of the lake to woodlands and remnants of native prairie, and mountain biking is an option on the trails.
Stuart itself has small-town dining, and Winterset and the Madison County covered bridges lie a short drive south.

Iowa state park campgrounds run a defined season. The Springbrook campground is closed January 1 through March 31, off peak April 1 through April 30, peak May 1 through October 15, off peak October 16 through October 31, and closed November 1 through December 31. Green Valley follows a similar window: closed January 1 through March 31, off peak in April, peak May 1 through October 15, off peak October 16 through October 31, and closed November through December 31.
Summer weekends fill quickly, especially the Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day holidays. In the summer months, campers are required to stay a minimum of two nights on most weekends with a three-night minimum stay required for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends. Spring and fall shoulder seasons offer easier availability but variable services: park staff generally try to have the water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by mid April and start closing them around mid-October depending on the weather, and if campers are interested in early April or later October there is no guarantee modern facilities will be available.
Private parks like Shady Brook Camping and RV Adventures, LLC and Des Moines West KOA Holiday tend to open earlier and stay open later than the state parks.

Isa was great to work with on our leaf peeping and Niagra Falls trip. She was very responsive to questions we had while on the road. She even helped us jump start our vehicle when it wouldn't start after our return. The rig was easy to drive even in Chicago construction zones and Boston rush-hour traffic.
