Campgrounds near Ballenger Creek

Ballenger Creek sits just south of Frederick, Maryland, in the rolling piedmont between the Catoctin Mountains and the Potomac River. RV renters use it as a base for the Frederick County parks, the C&O Canal National Historical Park, and the Catoctin Mountain ridge that runs north toward Thurmont. Most drive-up camping within an hour of town falls into two systems. Maryland Department of Natural Resources operates the state-park campgrounds at Cunningham Falls (Manor and Houck areas) and at Gambrill State Park on Catoctin Mountain. Brunswick Family Campground, a private property between the Potomac River and the C&O Canal towpath, is the closest option with electric and water hookups plus a handful of full-hookup sites. Evergreen Point Village provides an additional RV-friendly option in the immediate Frederick County area. Expect wooded, hilly sites in the state parks with tight loops, and flatter riverside sites with more infrastructure at Brunswick. Cell service is patchy in the Catoctin ridge, so trip plans should be downloaded in advance.

Things to do near Ballenger Creek

The Catoctin corridor is the main draw. Cunningham Falls State Park has a 78-foot cascading waterfall, a 43-acre lake with a swimming beach and boat rentals, and trails that connect the Houck and Manor areas. Gambrill State Park adds stone overlooks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and access to over 15 miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails, including the Catoctin Trail. Along the Potomac, the C&O Canal towpath runs flat and traffic-free for miles in both directions from Brunswick Family Campground, with the towpath providing the only road access to the riverfront camping area. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is about fifteen minutes from Brunswick, with Antietam National Battlefield and sections of the Appalachian Trail also within reach. Downtown Frederick offers restaurants, breweries, and a walkable historic core for rest-day trips.

The Maryland state-park camping season concentrates between April and October. The William Houck Area at Cunningham Falls opens at the beginning of April and closes at the end of October, and Gambrill State Park's Rock Run campground runs from the first weekend in April to the last weekend in October. Peak demand runs June through September and on holiday weekends, when sites often fill weeks or months in advance. The Manor Area at Cunningham Falls extends the shoulder season with primitive camping from November 1 through March 31. The bathhouse is closed during that window and a portable toilet is provided, and reservations are still required for primitive stays. Spring is typically the wettest season, and the annual Maple Syrup Festival takes place at Cunningham Falls in March. Summer is hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms. Fall delivers cool nights and strong foliage color on the Catoctin ridge. Winter camping is limited but possible at the Manor Area for prepared RV renters.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

The RV itself was in great condition and everything was extremely smooth and worked great. How to book

Cunningham Falls State Park and Gambrill State Park both reserve through the Maryland Park Service system at parkreservations.maryland.gov or by calling 1-888-432-CAMP. The booking window opens up to 365 days ahead of arrival, and reservations must be made at least one day before check-in. Reservations are required throughout the season at both parks. Nonresident, weekend, holiday, and electric premiums apply on top of the base rate, plus a service charge. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day a two-night minimum applies, and holiday weekends require a three-night stay. Brunswick Family Campground is a private operation with its own reservation channel through River & Trail Outfitters at potomacrivercampground.com. Evergreen Point Village bookings are handled directly with that property.

What to expect on-site

State-park sites in the Catoctins are wooded and shaded, with gravel pads, picnic tables, and fire rings. Cunningham Falls Houck Area accepts RVs up to about 40 feet on some loops, though many sites are posted for shorter rigs. Gambrill's Rock Run campground limits equipment length to roughly 20 to 30 feet depending on the site. Bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets operate in-season, and dump stations with potable water are available at both state parks. Electric hookups are limited and book first. There are no full water-and-sewer hookups at the state parks. Brunswick Family Campground has 30 and 50 amp service, three full-hookup sites, a bathhouse, camp store, and a dump station. Leashed pets are allowed in most loops. Cell coverage is unreliable in the Catoctin Mountains, and alcohol is prohibited in Maryland state-park campgrounds.
