Campgrounds near Bartonsville, Maryland
Bartonsville sits in Frederick County, Maryland, in the rolling Piedmont just east of Catoctin Mountain and within easy reach of the Potomac River. The area puts RV travelers within a short drive of three distinct camping environments: private RV facilities near the city of Frederick, state park campgrounds on Catoctin Mountain, and riverfront sites along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.
Evergreen Point Village is a private RV option close to Frederick. To the north, Cunningham Falls State Park operates two separate campgrounds, the Manor Area and the William Houck Area, both on Catoctin Mountain near Thurmont. Gambrill State Park sits west of Frederick on the same ridge, with its Rock Run campground tucked into hardwood forest. South of Bartonsville, Brunswick Family Campground occupies a strip between the Potomac River and the C and O Canal towpath, putting Harpers Ferry within roughly fifteen minutes.
Things to do near Bartonsville
Most trips from Bartonsville pair camping with hiking, history, or paddling. Cunningham Falls State Park is built around a 78-foot cascading waterfall, mountain streams, winding trails, and a scenic lake, with swimming, fishing, and boat rentals on Hunting Creek Lake in the William Houck Area. Gambrill State Park is divided into the High Knob area, at roughly 1,600 feet in elevation, and the Rock Run area at the base of the mountain. Three stone overlooks at High Knob draw mountain bikers and day hikers, and the park has about 16 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Within thirty minutes of Brunswick, visitors can reach Antietam National Battlefield, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Monocacy National Battlefield, and the Appalachian Trail. The C and O Canal towpath runs right past the Brunswick campground for biking and walking.

Most public campgrounds in the area run a spring-through-fall season. The William Houck Area Campground at Cunningham Falls opens at the beginning of April and closes at the end of October. Rock Run Campground at Gambrill State Park follows a similar pattern, opening the first weekend in April and closing the last weekend in October, with a mix of basic sites, tent-only sites, sites with electric hookups suitable for RVs or trailers, and four camper cabins. Brunswick Family Campground typically runs from late March through early November.
Winter options narrow significantly. Primitive camping at the Manor Area Campground is available November 1 through March 31, with the bathhouse closed for the winter and a portable toilet available; reservations are still required. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day and on fall foliage weekends in October. Cunningham Falls is one of Maryland's most popular state parks and draws large crowds on summer weekends and during its annual Maple Syrup Festival in March. Black bears are present in the Catoctin Mountains, so secure food storage matters.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

Both VANessa and Vanessa were awesome. All the amenities are thoughtfully available. Van drove well and my son and I had a trip we’ll talk about for years and remember forever. Vanessa is a great communicator and great person. 5+ stars.

Had an amazing travel experience with VANessa and Vanessa was a joy to work with. So very accommodating. The van is beautiful and has everything you could want. Even my pup Seamus gave it two paws up!

How to book a campsite
Maryland state park campgrounds use a single reservation system at parkreservations.maryland.gov, or by phone at 1-888-432-CAMP. That covers Cunningham Falls State Park, both the Manor and William Houck areas, and Gambrill State Park's Rock Run campground. Reservations open up to one year in advance on a rolling daily basis, and sites at popular parks can fill weeks or months ahead, especially for summer weekends, holiday weekends, cabins, and electric sites. Booking well ahead is strongly recommended for June through September.
Brunswick Family Campground is privately operated and takes reservations directly through the campground office. Evergreen Point Village handles bookings through its own office rather than through a state portal, so contacting the operator directly is the simplest route.
What to expect on the ground
Campgrounds in this corner of Maryland skew rustic rather than resort. Within Cunningham Falls State Park, the William Houck Area has roughly 140 sites arranged in five loops that wind up the mountainside, with 33 sites offering electric hookups and the rest basic; sites suit tents through larger RVs, and a dump station is available. The Manor Area is smaller, with about 21 basic sites and 10 electric sites in a quieter, more spread-out loop. Cell service is patchy throughout the park, and many carriers lose coverage in the Catoctin Mountains. Gambrill's Rock Run accommodates tents and RVs with some 30-amp electric sites but no full hookups, and has a bathhouse and dump station. Brunswick sits near mile marker 55 on the C and O Canal towpath, with riverfront sites that can feel close together on busy weekends.
