Campgrounds near Cavetown, Maryland
Cavetown sits in Washington County along the eastern edge of the Blue Ridge, within short driving distance of several state and national park campgrounds. The closest developed option is Greenbrier State Park, located in the Appalachian Mountains, which offers a man-made freshwater lake with swimming, sunbathing, boating and fishing. About twenty minutes east, the Catoctin Mountains hold a cluster of parks that share the same forested ridgeline.
Inside Catoctin Mountain Park, Owens Creek Campground - Catoctin Mountain Park provides primitive, wooded sites near a small stream just outside Thurmont. Just south, Cunningham Falls State Park runs two separate camping areas: Houck - Cunningham Falls State Park near Hunting Creek Lake and the 78-foot waterfall, and Manor - Cunningham Falls State Park near the historic Catoctin Iron Furnace. The William Houck Area sits on Route 77 west of Thurmont, while the Manor Area is about three miles south of Thurmont off Route 15.
Further south on Catoctin Mountain, Gambrill State Park adds a smaller ridge-top campground with overlooks toward Frederick. Together these five options cover a range of styles from tent-only creekside sites to electric hookups suitable for larger rigs.
Things to do near Cavetown
Hiking dominates the area. The Appalachian Trail crosses South Mountain just west of Cavetown, and the Catoctin Trail runs north from Gambrill State Park through Cunningham Falls State Park and on into Catoctin Mountain Park. The main attraction at Cunningham Falls is a 78-foot cascading waterfall, the highest in Maryland, reached by trails from the Houck Area.
Water activities center on Greenbrier's 42-acre lake, with a sandy swim beach, electric-motor and non-motorized boating, and stocked trout, bass, and bluegill fishing. Hunting Creek Lake at Cunningham Falls offers similar swimming and paddling. Big Hunting Creek, one of Maryland's premier trout streams, flows through the park.
Families with kids can add the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo, the Catoctin Iron Furnace ruins near the Manor Area, and the Scales and Tales aviary at the Manor Area, which houses hawks, eagles, and other raptors.

The main camping season in this part of Maryland runs roughly April through October. The William Houck Area Campground opens at the beginning of April and closes at the end of October annually. The Rock Run area campground at Gambrill State Park is open annually from the first weekend in April to the last weekend in October. Owens Creek Campground at Catoctin Mountain Park is typically open from late April into late October.
Spring brings wildflowers and cool nights, with leaves still off the trees into April, meaning less shade and less privacy between sites. Summer is peak season: warm, humid, and busy, especially on weekends when day-use crowds converge on Greenbrier's beach and Cunningham Falls. Fall delivers strong foliage color through mid-October and cooler, drier conditions.
Winter options are limited. The Manor Area at Cunningham Falls stays open year-round, with primitive camping from November through March; the bathhouse closes for the winter but a portable toilet is available, reservations are required, and the area may close during severe weather. The other four campgrounds close entirely.

We had a fantastic experience with Obi’s RV. It is a great RV, in excellent condition and really easy to drive and stay in. It is comfortable and spacious and Obi’s communication was excellent. Both he and his wife are lovely people and were incredibly helpful and thoughtful throughout the whole experience from booking through to return. I would highly recommend.

How to book
Maryland state park sites all go through one system. Reservations are required and can be made by visiting parkreservations.maryland.gov or calling 1-888-432-2267. This covers Greenbrier State Park, both Houck and Manor at Cunningham Falls State Park, and Gambrill State Park. Reservations are available up to 365 days in advance of the arrival date, with new inventory released daily, and popular summer weekends fill quickly.
Owens Creek Campground uses the federal system instead. Reservations are required, walk-ups are no longer accepted, and reservations can be made up to six months in advance at Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777.
Check rig-length limits before booking. Maximum trailer length at Owens Creek is 22 feet and maximum RV length is 30 feet, with only three pull-through sites suitable for RVs. Manor Area sites with electric hookups accommodate RVs and trailers up to 30 feet, while Houck loops can handle larger rigs.
What to expect
Sites are wooded and shaded, with gravel pads and a mix of electric and non-electric loops. Bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets operate during the main season at all four state park campgrounds and at Owens Creek. Dump stations are available at Greenbrier, Houck, and Gambrill's Rock Run; Owens Creek has no hookups on-site.
Cell service is inconsistent in the Catoctins. Coverage is patchy throughout Cunningham Falls State Park, and many carriers have limited or no service inside the mountains.
Black bears are active across the region. Keep food and garbage secure in camping and day-use areas, store food in the vehicle overnight, never in tents, and use campground dumpsters daily. Leashed pets are allowed in designated loops at each park, so check specific loop rules at booking.
