Camping near Chesapeake City, Maryland
Chesapeake City sits on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal in northern Cecil County, Maryland, putting RV travelers within a short drive of the Upper Chesapeake Bay, the Elk River, and the Pennsylvania and Delaware state lines. The area works well as a base for canal-town sightseeing, waterfront dining, and day trips to nearby state lands.
Campground options within roughly a half-hour drive include Woodlands Camping Resort in Elkton, which offers full hook-up sites and cabin rentals for transient campers. Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area covers roughly 5,600 acres of former du Pont estate land, with camping limited to organized youth groups and equestrian users. Elk Neck State Park, on a peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the Elk River, has over 250 campsites and cabins spread across multiple loops.
Duck Neck Campground, on the Chester River south of the Bay Bridge, adds a family-oriented private option with waterfront access. Camp Country Center, a Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay property near the Delaware line, primarily serves youth-group programming rather than transient RV travelers.
Things to do near Chesapeake City
Elk Neck State Park is the main outdoor draw. The park has a boat launch, a swimming beach on the Chesapeake Bay, and a hike to Turkey Point Lighthouse at the southern tip of the peninsula overlooking the bay and the Elk and Northeast rivers. Fishing, crabbing, kayaking, and picnicking are common on-park activities.
Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area offers roughly 80 miles of multi-use trails used by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians, along with a historic covered bridge, a nature center, and put-and-take trout fishing on Big Elk Creek. Trails along the creek can be muddy in spring.
Off-site, travelers use Duck Neck Campground and nearby marinas for Chester River boating and fishing, and Chestertown's historic High Street for a slower afternoon.

The prime RV season on the Upper Chesapeake runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. Elk Neck State Park campsites are reservable from mid-April to mid-October; outside that window, camping is first-come, first-served. The park has also announced a multi-year improvement project that includes replacement of rustic cabins and renovation of five bathhouses, so travelers should confirm which loops and cabins are open before booking.
Spring brings mild temperatures and blooming trails, but Big Elk Creek and other low-lying paths at Fair Hill can be wet and muddy well into early summer. Summer weekends and holidays fill quickly at state park loops and at private resorts along the canal and Chester River.
Fall offers cooler nights and lower bug pressure, and coincides with the Maryland 5 Star equestrian event at Fair Hill in October, which increases regional traffic. Winter camping is quiet, limited to year-round private parks and first-come, first-served state park sites in the off-season.
How to book campgrounds near Chesapeake City
Elk Neck State Park reservations are handled through the Maryland Department of Natural Resources reservation system at parkreservations.maryland.gov, or by phone at 1-888-432-2267 on weekdays. Sites can be booked up to one year in advance, and popular summer weekends should be booked early. The reservation window covers mid-April through mid-October; off-season stays are first-come, first-served.
Fair Hill camping is limited to organized youth groups and equestrian users, and is arranged directly with the park office at 410-398-1246 on weekdays.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Woodlands Camping Resort in Elkton takes reservation requests through its website. Duck Neck Campground accepts reservations through its own site. Camp Country Center is a Girl Scout property and books group stays through the council rather than a public campground portal.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of wooded state park loops, working-farm and equestrian landscapes, and older waterfront private parks with a heavy seasonal-camper presence. Elk Neck spreads campsites across several loops including Elk, Choptank, Miles, Bohemia, North East, Chester, Susquehanna, and the tent-only Wye loop, with a mix of electric and non-electric sites and bathhouses with hot showers.
Cell service is inconsistent in the campground loops at Elk Neck, and coverage on the Eastern Shore can also be spotty. Plan on downloading maps and reservation confirmations in advance.
Private parks near Chesapeake City lean family-oriented, with pools, playgrounds, and pet-friendly policies. Big rigs are generally accommodated, but expect speed bumps, tight interior roads at some parks, and limited grocery options once off the main highways.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Chesapeake City, MD
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Chesapeake City, MD?
An RV rental in Chesapeake City is more affordable than you might think. Motorhomes around Chesapeake City average about $200 to $250 per night, while travel trailers and fifth wheels run closer to $120 to $160 per night, and many hosts offer 10 to 20 percent off for weekly or monthly bookings. To find a cheap RV rental in Chesapeake City, filter by your dates first, then sort by price and look at pop ups or smaller travel trailers. Pro tip: booking midweek or in the May or September shoulder seasons (before and after the Chesapeake Bay summer rush) can shave another 15 to 25 percent off your nightly rate while keeping the weather warm and the canal views just as pretty.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chesapeake%20City%2C%20MarylandDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Chesapeake City, Maryland?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Chesapeake City. Maryland does not require a Commercial Driver's License or any RV specific endorsement for the Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels listed on RVezy. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and you will verify your ID inside the RVezy platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit along with your home license. Most first time renters are surprised by how quick the verification is, often the same day you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat kind of protection comes with my Chesapeake City RV rental?
Every RV rental in Chesapeake City booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from pickup to dropoff. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and it helps cover damage to the RV during your trip. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it gives you real financial peace of mind for the bumps and scrapes that can happen on the road. Paired with the RVezy support team, your Chesapeake City RV trip stays low stress, even if it is your first time behind the wheel.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Chesapeake City RV booking?
You can book your Chesapeake City RV rental with confidence because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy. There is a full money back grace period right after booking, and after that your refund depends on how close you are to your trip start date. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits so your plans stay protected. You can review the full policy on RVezy.com before you confirm, so a Chesapeake City RV trip never feels like a high risk decision.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Chesapeake City?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Chesapeake City is easy to find. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see only the listings where dogs (and sometimes cats) are welcome. Once you arrive, your pup will love the area: Elk Neck State Park about 15 miles south allows leashed pets on most trails and at many campsites, and the towpath along the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal right in town is a perfect spot for a sunrise walk together. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size or breed notes, then pack a tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and proof of rabies vaccination in case a campground asks.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/central/ElkNeck.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Chesapeake City?
Yes, RV delivery in Chesapeake City is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you have never towed before. Many RVezy hosts will drive the RV right to your site at places like Elk Neck State Park, Lums Pond State Park, or a private waterfront park, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Just turn on the Delivery filter when you search, then enter your destination address to see hosts who serve that area. Delivery fees usually depend on distance, so closer drop offs (within 20 to 30 miles of town) tend to be the most budget friendly.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chesapeake%20City%2C%20MarylandHow far can I drive on a typical Chesapeake City RV trip?
You've got serious range from Chesapeake City because most hosts here include a generous daily mileage allowance, and some even offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. Each listing shows the included miles and the per-mile rate for anything extra, so there are no surprises. From Chesapeake City you can reach Ocean City, MD in about 2 hours, Washington, DC in roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes, Philadelphia in about 1 hour, and Assateague Island's wild ponies in around 2.5 hours, all well within a typical mileage package. Pro tip: if you're planning a bigger loop, message the host before booking to ask about a custom mileage add-on.
fhwa.dot.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Chesapeake City, MD?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Chesapeake City. A few favorites: Elk Neck State Park (about 15 miles south) has waterfront sites and electric loops overlooking the Chesapeake Bay; Lums Pond State Park just over the Delaware line offers full hookup RV sites around a 200 acre pond; Woodlands Camping Resort in Elkton is a family friendly private park about 20 minutes away; and Bar Harbor RV Park and Marina near North East gives you a waterfront marina vibe. For something quieter, Susquehanna State Park to the northwest combines historic mills with shaded RV sites. Book Elk Neck and Lums Pond early, summer waterfront sites fill fast.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/central/ElkNeck.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Chesapeake City?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for a Chesapeake City RV trip, with the sweet spots being May to early June and September to mid-October. Daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s to mid-80s°F (around 21 to 30°C) and the Chesapeake Bay breeze keeps evenings pleasant. July and August are warm and humid (often 85 to 90°F with 80 to 90% humidity), which is great for swimming but means you'll want an RV with strong air conditioning. Fall brings golden marsh grasses and far fewer bugs, and Canal Day (the town's signature festival, typically the last Saturday of June) is a fantastic time to be in town with your RV parked nearby.
weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Chesapeake City?
You're going to do great, and Chesapeake City is actually a wonderful place to start. Roads here are flat and rural, traffic is light outside of the town's small bridge area, and the surrounding Cecil County back roads (toward Fair Hill, North East, and Chesapeake City's South Side) are forgiving practice ground. Every RVezy host gives you a full pickup orientation walking through driving, propane, tanks, slides, and hookups, and they're a text away during your trip. If you're nervous about driving at all, just choose a host who offers delivery and they'll handle the rest. Pro tip: avoid the narrow drawbridge in the historic district with a tall rig — use Route 213 or the high-level bridge instead.
roads.maryland.gov/What if something goes wrong with the RV on the road?
You are never on your own. Every Chesapeake City RV rental on RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included in the protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, or lockout on Route 213 or I-95 is just a phone call away. Your host is reachable through the RVezy app for quick questions like how to reset the inverter or relight the water heater, and the RVezy support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup and save the host's number and the roadside number to your phone before you pull out, so help is one tap away if you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular road trips I can take from Chesapeake City?
Chesapeake City sits in a sweet spot for an RV road trip from Chesapeake City because you're within easy reach of beaches, mountains, and big cities. Top routes: Ocean City and Assateague Island for wild ponies and Atlantic surf (about 2 to 2.5 hours south); Cape Henlopen and Rehoboth Beach, DE (about 1.5 hours east); Gettysburg, PA for Civil War history (about 2 hours north); Shenandoah National Park for Skyline Drive (about 3 hours southwest); and the Brandywine Valley wineries and Longwood Gardens (under an hour north). Cross-border trips into Canada are possible with some hosts (just ask before booking), but Mexico travel is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage.
nps.gov/asis/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Chesapeake City RV trip?
Fuel is one of the bigger trip costs, but it's easy to plan for. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans 16 to 20 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer 10 to 14 mpg. Maryland gas prices generally run a little above the national average, so budget roughly $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon for regular and a touch more for diesel. There's a Royal Farms and a Wawa within a few miles of Chesapeake City for easy fill-ups, and Wawa often has the friendliest pump layout for big rigs. Pro tip: top off in Delaware (about 10 minutes east) where there's no sales tax on gas and prices are usually a few cents cheaper.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Chesapeake City?
For the best campgrounds near Chesapeake City, plan to reserve 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends and holidays, especially Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Maryland state parks like Elk Neck open reservations through the Maryland Park Service reservation system up to a year in advance, and waterfront sites genuinely sell out the day they open. Lums Pond State Park bookings go through Delaware State Parks. For private parks like Woodlands Camping Resort or Bar Harbor RV Park, 2 to 3 months is usually fine. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have openings even in peak summer, so a Tuesday-to-Friday family RV trip in Chesapeake City is a smart workaround.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/pages/reservations.aspxWhat are driving conditions like around Chesapeake City?
Driving an RV around Chesapeake City is genuinely relaxed compared to most East Coast destinations. The town is split in two by the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal and connected by the high-level Route 213 bridge (135 feet of clearance, no problem for any RV). I-95 is just 15 minutes north for fast trips to Philadelphia or Baltimore, and Route 40 gives a slower scenic alternative. Watch for two things: the older low drawbridge in the historic district can be tight for wide rigs, so stick to the high bridge, and summer thunderstorms can roll in quickly off the bay. Avoid the I-95 corridor between 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays for the smoothest ride.
chart.maryland.gov/What hookups and amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Chesapeake City?
Most established campgrounds around Chesapeake City offer the full RV setup you'd hope for. Elk Neck State Park has electric sites (some 50-amp) with water nearby and a central dump station; Lums Pond State Park's RV loop has full hookups with concrete pads and 30-amp service; and private parks like Woodlands Camping Resort and Bar Harbor RV Park offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, laundry, and bathhouses. For mid-trip dumping and freshwater fills, the dump station at Elk Neck is open to non-campers for a small fee. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose, a 30-to-50-amp adapter, and a basic sewer kit; many RVezy hosts include these, but it never hurts to double-check the listing.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/central/ElkNeck.aspxWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Chesapeake City?
Whether you choose a motorhome rental in Chesapeake City or a towable trailer, you'll find a surprising amount of home packed into a small space. Most rentals include a queen or king bed plus convertible bunks or dinette beds (sleeping 4 to 8), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a full bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with roof AC and furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many have TVs, Bluetooth stereos, outdoor speakers, awnings, and either a built-in generator or shore-power-only setup. Each RVezy listing spells out exactly what's included, from linens to kitchen kits, so you'll know before you book. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count to make sure everyone in your crew has a real bed.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Chesapeake City RV rental?
Hosts in Chesapeake City offer all kinds of helpful add-ons to customize your trip. Common options include delivery and setup (often $2 to $4 per mile), a generator package, a fully stocked kitchen kit, bedding and towel bundles, camp chairs, propane fire pits, bike racks, kayak racks, and even Starlink Wi-Fi on some rigs. Mileage policies vary by host, with typical packages including 100 to 150 free miles per day plus an option to pre-purchase more at a discounted rate. Pickup is usually at the host's address with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough; dropoff is the same location unless you've arranged delivery. Pro tip: bundle the kitchen kit and bedding for first-time renters; it saves a Target run.
fmcsa.dot.gov/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book a campervan rental in Chesapeake City or any other RV, you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card (never directly to the host), so your booking and protection plan are activated the moment you check out. Most hosts require a refundable security deposit that is pre authorized on your card a few days before pickup; the exact amount is shown on the listing and depends on the RV. As long as you return the RV in the same condition (clean, tanks emptied if required, and on time), the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: do a quick walkthrough video at both pickup and dropoff to keep your deposit drama free.
