Campgrounds and RV parks near Denton, MD

Water access defines most activities. Martinak State Park sits near the banks of the Choptank River and has a recently renovated boat ramp, with fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and bank-side crabbing along the river and Watts Creek. The park's short, flat trails are suitable for kids and strollers. Tuckahoe State Park is a stream and valley park divided by Tuckahoe Creek, which runs the length of the park's 4,000 acres, and offers boating and fishing on a 60-acre lake. The park offers 25 miles of scenic hiking, biking and equestrian trails, an inclusive Sensory Trail, flat water canoeing and kayaking, hunting, picnicking, and playgrounds. Adkins Arboretum occupies 400 acres within the park and displays vegetation indigenous to Maryland, and Tuckahoe also offers a Scales and Tales Aviary, plus a disc golf course and archery range. In town, Denton offers small museums and riverfront access on the Choptank, with day trips possible to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and Harriet Tubman sites.

The camping season on the Eastern Shore effectively runs from late March through early November, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Maryland state park campgrounds at Martinak and Tuckahoe stay open year-round, though services are reduced in the coldest months and water can be shut off at frost-prone fixtures. Spring brings comfortable temperatures, migrating birds, and green-up along the Choptank, but also a wet stretch and heavy pollen. Summer is warm, humid, and buggy near the tidal creeks, with afternoon thunderstorms common and biting insects at dusk. Fall is the most reliable window for RV travel, with cooler nights, lower humidity, fewer bugs, and open sightlines through the hardwoods. Private campgrounds vary. Holiday Park operates on a seasonal schedule tied to the warm months, while G and R Recreation Campground and other private parks may offer longer shoulder-season stays. Winter camping is possible at the state parks but limited to self-contained rigs prepared for freezing overnight temperatures.

Martinak State Park Campground has 63 campsites, with 30 electric hookup sites, and each campsite has a table, fire ring and grate; amenities include drinking water, flush toilets and a dump station with water fill. The campground runs two loops, each centered around its own bathhouse, with Loop B carrying 30-amp electric hookups and Loop A a mix of non-electric sites and a handful of first-come, first-served electric spots. Most sites are shady. Tuckahoe State Park has electric and non-electric loops, cabins, and a group camping area. Cell reception can be limited inside the park, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is wise. Private parks near Denton lean family-focused, with playgrounds, laundry, and camp stores. Expect enforced quiet hours, leash rules for pets, and gravel or grass pads under a canopy of mature hardwoods.
