Campgrounds near Elkridge, Maryland
Elkridge sits in Howard County between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., with the Patapsco River corridor running through the northern edge of town. That location puts RV travelers within a short drive of both metro areas and inside one of the densest clusters of parks in the mid-Atlantic. State-park camping is concentrated in Patapsco Valley State Park, while private RV resorts and a KOA fill the gap on full-hookup stays.
The Hollofield Area of Patapsco Valley State Park offers a mix of electric and primitive sites arranged in two concentric loops, with height-restricted rigs required to enter via the Route 40 East entrance. Campers should confirm current status with the Maryland Park Service before booking, as the loop has been affected by renovation work.
For a full-hookup base closer to D.C., Cherry Hill Park in College Park is a large private resort with hundreds of RV sites, tent spaces, and cabin or yurt units, plus 30 and 50-amp service and a big-rig-friendly layout. Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday and Ramblin' Pines round out the private options, and Greenbelt Park offers 172 campground sites with showers and restrooms and reservations are required.
Things to do near Elkridge
Patapsco Valley State Park is the outdoor anchor, with hiking, fishing, mountain biking, horseback trails, and picnicking spread across multiple day-use areas. The Avalon Area contains the historic Thomas Viaduct, a nineteenth-century multiple-arched stone railroad bridge that remains in active use.
Greenbelt Park sits closer to D.C. and adds forested trails and free ranger programs. Free Saturday campfires at Greenbelt Park include stories, history, and wildlife programs. From most campgrounds, travelers can drive or take transit into Washington for the Smithsonian museums, the National Mall, and the National Zoo, or head into Baltimore for the Inner Harbor and the National Aquarium.
On-site amenities vary by campground. Cherry Hill Park runs multiple pools, a splash area, a dog park, and guided D.C. tours, while state and national park sites lean toward quiet, wooded settings with minimal built amenities.

The camping calendar in this part of Maryland splits between public and private parks. Patapsco Valley State Park's Hollofield Area campground operates seasonally in the warm months, offering both electric and primitive sites. Outside that window, state-park RV options in the immediate area are limited, so travelers arriving in late fall or winter should plan on a private park.
Reservations at Greenbelt Park are required year round, and the Greenbelt Park campground is open year round. Cherry Hill Park, Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday, and Ramblin' Pines also operate through winter, though weekday demand drops sharply after Thanksgiving and picks back up around the cherry blossom bloom in late March.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for touring: mild temperatures, lower humidity than midsummer, and easier booking than the peak July and August window. Summer weekends around D.C. and Baltimore tourism draws fill full-hookup sites weeks in advance, and holiday weekends fill even sooner.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

Both VANessa and Vanessa were awesome. All the amenities are thoughtfully available. Van drove well and my son and I had a trip we’ll talk about for years and remember forever. Vanessa is a great communicator and great person. 5+ stars.

Had an amazing travel experience with VANessa and Vanessa was a joy to work with. So very accommodating. The van is beautiful and has everything you could want. Even my pup Seamus gave it two paws up!

How to book campgrounds near Elkridge
Reservation systems here follow the agency that owns the park. Bookings for Hollofield Campground go through the Maryland Park Service reservation system and can be made up to a year in advance, with a minimum lead time of one day before arrival.
Greenbelt Park uses the federal system. Sites may be booked 6 months in advance, payment is not accepted on site, and campsites must be booked in advance or upon arrival using the Recreation.gov website or call center at 1-877-444-6777. There are no electrical or water hookups available, so it functions as a primitive campground with showers and a dump station.
Cherry Hill Park, Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday, and Ramblin' Pines take reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines. For cherry blossom season, summer weekends, and major D.C. events, book several months out.
What to expect at Elkridge-area campgrounds
Expect a mix of urban-adjacent forest camping and full-service RV resorts. Patapsco Valley State Park sites feel wooded despite the surrounding suburbs, with campers occasionally hearing traffic on Route 40 or catching glimpses of neighborhoods through the trees.
Greenbelt Park is a primitive, forested campground with paved roads and parking spurs. The narrow, one-way loop roads require backing into sites, and some areas have low-hanging branches that challenge larger rigs. RV length limits vary by loop, and B Loop has 46 sites and is open to tents and RVs, though most are for smaller RVs (35' or less).
Cherry Hill Park runs more like a resort, with a gated entrance, guided D.C. tours, transit service, and cable at each site. Big rigs and slide-outs are handled routinely at the private parks; state and national park sites are tighter and better suited to smaller Class C and travel-trailer setups.

You can message your host with questions before you book, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included if you hit a hiccup on the road. Pro tip: ease in with a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer, and pick a first-night stay close by like Patapsco Valley State Park (just 15 minutes from Elkridge) so you can settle in before tackling longer drives.

cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Maryland RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable on any RV rental Maryland budget, so plan ahead. As of spring 2026, Maryland's regular gas averages around $3.80 to $4.00 per gallon (Baltimore metro typically tracks just slightly under the state average). Class C motorhomes get roughly 8-10 miles per gallon (mpg), Class A rigs 6-9 mpg, campervans 16-20 mpg, and a trailer-towing SUV or truck 10-14 mpg. For a 300-mile weekend in a Class C, budget around $120-$150 in fuel. Driving an RV out of Elkridge is very manageable once you know the local quirks. The town sits at the I-95 and I-895 junction with easy access to I-70 and the Baltimore Beltway (I-695), all wide highways well-suited to motorhomes. Avoid driving through downtown Baltimore or central D.C. (low clearances, tight streets), and skip the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895) in larger rigs, instead use the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) which allows most non-hazmat RVs, or the Key Bridge replacement route. Rush hour (7-9am and 3-7pm) on I-95 is brutal. Pro tip: head north or west early in the morning to avoid the heaviest D.C.-to-Baltimore commuter traffic.

Pro tip: do a thorough walk-around with the host at pickup and dropoff, take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior, and return the RV cleaned out with fuel and propane levels noted on your contract for a fast, full deposit refund.

Start with Friday night at Patapsco's Hollofield campground (just 10 minutes from town) for a low-pressure first night, then Saturday morning point east on US-50 toward Assateague Island National Seashore (about 2.5 hours), where wild ponies roam the beach and oceanfront campsites await.
