RV camping near Essex, Maryland
Essex sits on a peninsula east of Baltimore where the Back River meets the Chesapeake Bay, putting RV travelers within a short drive of both urban attractions and tidewater parks. The area works well as a base for exploring Baltimore's Inner Harbor, the Eastern Shore, and the historic towns of Harford County, with I-95 and I-695 providing quick access in every direction.
Waterfront private parks dominate the immediate area. Bar Harbor RV Park and Marina is family-owned with lots of amenities, offering waterfront camping on the Bush River with fishing, boat launching, and a pool. The park is one of the closest RV options to Baltimore's Inner Harbor, roughly a half-hour drive away.
Inland options include the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday for travelers combining Baltimore with a DC trip, plus two Maryland state parks: Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area west of the city, and Susquehanna State Park up near Havre de Grace. Bay Shore Campground, across the bay in Rock Hall, adds a quieter Eastern Shore alternative.
Things to do around Essex
Water activity drives most trips here. Campers can fish, crab, kayak, or launch a boat directly from Bar Harbor RV Park and Marina on the Bush River, and Chesapeake Bay charters run out of nearby marinas. Baltimore's Inner Harbor, the National Aquarium, Fort McHenry, and Fells Point are all short drives from Essex.
For land-based recreation, the Patapsco Valley corridor offers camping, hiking, fishing, canoeing, horseback trails and mountain bike trails, as well as picnicking, and Susquehanna State Park has over fifteen miles of trails, including the accessible Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenways Trail. Historic stops include the Rock Run Grist Mill at Susquehanna and the waterfront town of Havre de Grace with its Concord Point Lighthouse.
Eastern Shore day trips from Bay Shore Campground include Rock Hall's harbor and the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge for birding.

The Chesapeake camping season centers on late spring through early fall. State-park campgrounds follow this pattern: the Susquehanna State Park campground is open for visits between April and October, and reservations are strongly recommended, and the Hollofield Area campground operates seasonally from April through October, offering both electric and primitive sites arranged in two concentric loops. Confirm current status before booking, as the Hollofield area campground is currently closed for renovations.
Summer brings the heaviest bookings along with heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. Late spring and early fall are the most pleasant weather-wise; the area does not see heavy snow but is quite humid through July and August.
Spring and fall are strong shoulder seasons for wildlife, with migrating raptors, waterfowl, and songbirds moving through the Chesapeake corridor. Private waterfront parks like Bar Harbor RV Park and Marina and Bay Shore Campground stay open year-round for off-season stays, and Bayshore Campground in Rock Hall is open year-round.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

How to book campgrounds near Essex
Maryland state parks use a central reservation system. Reservations are highly recommended for weekend camping and can be made through the Park Reservations portal or by calling 1-888-432-2267. Reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 365 days in advance, so summer weekends and holidays should be locked in months out.
Private parks book directly. Bar Harbor RV Park and Marina and Bay Shore Campground take reservations through their own websites, and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday books via the KOA system. For sold-out state-park weekends, cancellation-alert services can help catch openings.
Check rig-size limits before booking. At Susquehanna, six sites have electrical hookups and the maximum length for RVs is 30 feet. At Hollofield, campers whose units are over 11 feet 1 inch in height must enter the park by the Route 40 East Entrance.
What to expect on-site
Hookups vary widely across the region. Bar Harbor RV Park and Marina offers full-hookup sites, both waterfront and set back, with a pool, marina, and camp store. Bay Shore Campground provides spacious, level sites with water and electric hookups on a bluff above the Chesapeake, and there are several dump stations throughout the campground.
State-park sites are more rustic. Susquehanna has 69 RV and tent sites within two loops, the Acorn Loop and the Beechnut Loop, six of which have electrical hookups with a maximum RV length of 30 feet. Each site features a fire ring and picnic table, and both loops have comfort stations with hot showers. The Hollofield campground has 73 campsites, some with electric hookups, and each campsite has a picnic table and a fire ring.
Expect tree cover, humidity, mosquitoes near the water, and occasional aircraft noise close to Baltimore. Cell coverage is generally strong across the metro but can drop in the wooded Patapsco valley.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Essex, MD
How much does an RV rental in Essex, MD typically cost?
Good news: you can rent an RV in Essex for less than most hotel rooms on the Chesapeake. On RVezy, travel trailers around Essex typically run about $90 to $160 per night, campervan rentals in Essex average $130 to $200, and larger Class C motorhomes usually fall between $175 and $300. Pricing depends on season, with peak rates from Memorial Day through Labor Day. To find a cheap RV rental in Essex, book midweek, travel in May or late September when Bay weather is still gorgeous, and use the price filter to sort by budget. Pro tip: a small travel trailer is plenty of RV for a Chesapeake weekend without the Class A price tag.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Essex%2C%20MarylandDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Essex, Maryland?
Great news for first-time renters: your regular driver's license is all you need for nearly every RV rental in Essex. Maryland classifies motorhomes as recreational vehicles, and the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) specifically exempts them from requiring a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Visitors from other states and provinces can drive on their home license under standard reciprocity rules. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and ID verification happens right in the platform during checkout, so there's nothing to mail or scan in person. International guests should grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from their home auto club before flying in. Then you're ready to pick up the keys.
mva.maryland.gov/drivers/Pages/recreational-vehicle-info.aspxWhat protection and roadside help comes with my Essex RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you hit the road. Every RV rental in Essex booked on RVezy includes a protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on MD-702 or a dead battery at a Back River boat launch is just a phone call away. RVezy offers tiered renter protection plans that cover physical damage to the RV, giving you peace of mind without arranging separate insurance. You (not the host) choose the coverage level that fits your trip during checkout. It's designed to keep small mishaps from turning into big stresses, so you can focus on Chesapeake sunsets instead.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Essex, Maryland RV trip?
Booking is low-risk, so you can lock in your dates with confidence. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy for every booking, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you have breathing room to confirm time off and travel plans. Refund amounts then depend on how far out from your trip you cancel, and extenuating-circumstance protections may apply for unusual events like a major storm affecting the Chesapeake region. You'll see the full policy details on the RVezy website before you confirm payment. If life throws a curveball, RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after every Essex trip to help you sort it out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Essex?
Absolutely, and Essex is wonderfully dog-friendly. Plenty of hosts on RVezy offer pet-friendly RV rentals in Essex, and you can find them in seconds using the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page. Once you're on the road, your pup will love sniffing along the boardwalk at Rocky Point Park, the open green space at Cox Point Park overlooking Middle River, and the trails at nearby North Point State Park in Edgemere. Most local campgrounds welcome leashed pets too. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any size or breed preferences and ask about a quick walkthrough at pickup so your four-legged copilot feels right at home.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Essex%2C%20MarylandCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Essex?
Yes, RV delivery in Essex is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're nervous about driving a big rig through Baltimore traffic. Many RVezy hosts will tow or drive the RV to your campground, marina, or even your driveway, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service and their delivery radius. Popular drop spots near Essex include Bar Harbor RV Park in Abingdon and Duncan's Family Campground in Lothian. It's the simplest way to enjoy RV camping in Essex without ever touching a steering wheel.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Essex%2C%20MarylandHow far can I drive on an Essex RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have plenty of room to roam. Most hosts on RVezy include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day), and you can filter for an RV rental with unlimited mileage if you're planning a longer Essex RV trip. From Essex you're 20 minutes to downtown Baltimore, about 45 minutes to Annapolis, roughly 90 minutes to Washington, D.C., 2.5 hours to Ocean City and Assateague Island, and about 2 hours to Shenandoah's Skyline Drive. Each listing clearly shows the included miles and the per-mile overage fee on the pricing page. Pro tip: if you're setting up shop at one campground and day-tripping by car, the standard allowance is usually plenty.
nps.gov/asis/planyourvisit/marylandcamping.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Essex, MD for RV camping?
You've got excellent options within a short drive. Orems RV Park, right in Essex, offers overnight, short-term, and long-term full-hookup sites and is the closest option to town. Bar Harbor RV Park, about 25 minutes north in Abingdon, sits right on the Bush River with full hookups and a marina. Elk Neck State Park (about an hour northeast near North East, MD) has 250+ sites on the Chesapeake. Cherry Hill Park near College Park is the go-to for D.C. day trips, and Duck Neck Campground in Chestertown is a peaceful Eastern Shore favorite. Book Maryland state park sites through the official park reservations site below, ideally 2 to 3 months ahead for summer weekends.
parkreservations.maryland.gov/When is the best time to take an RV trip from Essex, Maryland?
Late April through mid-October is prime time, with May, June, September, and early October being the absolute sweet spot. Spring highs hit a comfortable 62 to 72°F with low humidity, summer warms to 80 to 87°F (and yes, it gets muggy by the Bay), and fall delivers crisp 60s with stunning foliage along the Gunpowder River. July and August are the warmest and busiest months, so book your RV camping in Essex early if you want a Bay-view site. Winter trips are possible too if you choose a four-season RV: January lows average around 27°F with occasional light snow. Insider tip: the second week of October combines warm days, cool nights, and far fewer crowds at Rocky Point Park.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay starting in Essex?
You'll do great, and you're not alone. First time renting an RV in Essex is more common than you'd think, and every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup that covers driving, leveling, water, electric, propane, and waste tanks before you ever pull away. Choose a Class B campervan or a smaller travel trailer for easy maneuvering on local roads like Eastern Boulevard and MD-702. Avoid downtown Baltimore narrow streets and the lower deck of the Bay Bridge if heights make you nervous, and stick to I-95 and I-695 for the easiest first drive. You can also message hosts beforehand with any questions, and 24/7 RVezy support is one tap away if you ever feel stuck.
mva.maryland.gov/drivers/Pages/recreational-vehicle-info.aspxWhat happens if something goes wrong with my RV during the trip?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on the Baltimore Beltway, a dead battery at Rocky Point Park, or a tow situation along US-40 is handled with one phone call. The roadside team coordinates jump starts, tire changes, fuel delivery, lockout help, and towing to the nearest qualified service shop. Your host is also typically reachable by message if you have a quick question about how a system works, and RVezy's trip support team has your back from booking through dropoff. Save the roadside number in your phone at pickup, then forget about it and go enjoy the Bay.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Essex, Maryland?
You're sitting on one of the best RV road trip hubs on the East Coast. Popular routes from Essex include: a 2.5-hour run southeast to Assateague Island National Seashore to camp with wild horses on the beach; a 1.5-hour trip south to St. Mary's County and Point Lookout State Park on the lower Chesapeake; a 2-hour drive west to Shenandoah National Park's Skyline Drive; a 3-hour northern loop to Gettysburg, PA and back through Lancaster County Amish country; and a 90-minute trip up to Elk Neck State Park near the head of the Bay. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan (just message before booking); travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals.
nps.gov/asis/planyourvisit/marylandcamping.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for an Essex RV trip?
Budgeting is simple once you know the basic numbers. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, Class A motorhomes run 6 to 10 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer is typically 10 to 14 mpg. Maryland gas prices generally sit near the national average, and you'll find easy fill-ups at the Royal Farms and Wawa stations along Pulaski Highway (US-40) and Eastern Boulevard in Essex (these locations have wide aprons that fit big rigs). For a typical 4-day, 300-mile Chesapeake loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $120 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: fuel up before crossing onto the Eastern Shore as prices climb slightly near Ocean City.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Essex?
Booking ahead is the secret to a smooth Essex RV trip. Maryland state parks (including Elk Neck, North Point, and Susquehanna) open reservations up to 12 months in advance through the official Maryland Park Service reservation system, and summer weekends at popular Bay-area parks fill 2 to 4 months out. Private parks like Bar Harbor RV Park and Duck Neck Campground also book up by April for July and August weekends. For shoulder-season trips in May or late September, you can often grab a site 2 to 3 weeks out. Pro tip: aim for a Sunday-to-Thursday stay if you're flexible. You'll find better availability, lower nightly rates, and quieter waterfront campsites.
parkreservations.maryland.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Essex and Baltimore?
Essex itself is easy driving, with wide suburban roads and quick I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) access. The main thing to know: RVs carrying propane are prohibited from the I-895 Harbor Tunnel and the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel, so use I-695 and the Francis Scott Key Bridge route around the harbor instead. Watch for low clearances in downtown Baltimore (some under 11 feet) and skip narrow streets in Fells Point and Federal Hill. Rush hour on I-695 runs 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m., so plan departures around it. Summer thunderstorms can pop up fast off the Bay, and winter brings occasional ice on bridges. Stick to I-95, I-695, and US-40 and you'll cruise easily.
mdta.maryland.gov/HAZMATWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Essex?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable Essex RV trip. Most private parks near Essex, like Orems RV Park and Bar Harbor RV Park, offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and a camp store. State parks such as North Point State Park and Elk Neck typically offer electric and water hookups at RV sites plus a centralized dump station and potable water fill. Pro tip: fill your fresh tank before leaving the rental host's location. You'll have one fewer stop on your way to the Bay.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/camping.aspxWhat's typically included in an Essex RV rental's equipment and amenities?
You'll find your home-on-wheels already stocked. Most Essex RV rentals on RVezy come with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunks, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, microwave, propane stove, sink), a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many also include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, a power awning, and a generator for boondocking. Wi-Fi varies by listing, but cellular signal is strong throughout the Essex and Chesapeake area so a mobile hotspot works well. Check each listing's amenities tab for specifics like solar, backup camera, and number of seatbelts, and message the host if you need confirmation before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Essex%2C%20MarylandWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for a motorhome rental in Essex?
Hosts make customizing your trip easy. Common add-ons for a motorhome rental in Essex include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, camping chairs, outdoor grills, generators, bike racks, kayak racks, fishing gear, and pet-cleaning fees. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup as an add-on if you'd rather skip driving. Pickup is typically at the host's home or storage lot in the Essex, Middle River, or Dundalk area, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Use the Instant Book filter for listings that confirm in seconds. Mileage allowances and pet rules are shown right on each listing, so you'll know exactly what's included before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Essex%2C%20MarylandHow do payment and security deposits work on RVezy?
The payment process is simple and transparent. When you book your Essex RV rental, you pay through the secure RVezy platform with a credit card, never directly to the host in cash. Your rental total, taxes, protection plan, and any add-ons are itemized clearly before you confirm. A refundable security deposit is held (not charged) on your card before the trip starts, then released after dropoff once the host confirms the RV came back in the same shape. To avoid any deposit issues, take a quick walkaround photo set at pickup, return with a full fuel and propane tank if required by your agreement, and empty the waste tanks at an approved dump station before returning.
