Campgrounds near Fairplay, Maryland
Fairplay is an unincorporated community in Washington County, located between Hagerstown and Sharpsburg along Maryland Route 65. The area sits in the Hagerstown Valley of western Maryland, minutes from the Potomac River, Antietam National Battlefield, and the foothills of South Mountain. RV renters use it as a base for Civil War history, C&O Canal riding, and lake-and-mountain camping without long drives.
Campground options within a short drive cover the full range. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Williamsport is the closest family-focused resort park, with pools and organized kid activities. Greenbrier State Park is a Maryland state park located on South Mountain in Washington County with camping, hiking trails, and a 42-acre man-made lake, managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Hagerstown / Antietam Battlefield KOA Holiday sits near I-81 for easy interstate access, while Leatherman's/Falling Waters Campsite and Harpers Ferry Campground extend options across the Potomac into West Virginia.
Sites in the area range from full-hookup RV pads to non-electric tent spots, so trip planners can match rig size and power needs to the right park.
Things to do near Fairplay
Antietam National Battlefield anchors most itineraries in the area. The battlefield is approximately 3,000 acres that visitors can explore by car or on foot, with stops at Dunker Church, the Sunken Road, and Burnside Bridge. The self-guided driving tour road is 8½ miles long with 11 stops, and walking and biking are encouraged.
Greenbrier State Park offers a freshwater lake for swimming, boating, and fishing, plus wooded hiking trails. A short stretch of the Appalachian Trail runs through the eastern border of the park, with a further 11 miles of wooded trails for hikers and mountain bikers. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath is a short drive south for walking and cycling along the Potomac, and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park adds another full day of history and river views.

Peak RV season runs from late spring through mid-October. Greenbrier State Park is currently open through late October, with a seasonal camping window, so shoulder-season trips need to confirm dates before booking. Private parks in the area, including the Jellystone resort and KOA, generally operate longer seasons and offer full hookups suited to cooler nights.
Summer brings warm, humid days and afternoon thunderstorms, with July the hottest month. Fall is the sweet spot for touring Antietam and hiking South Mountain: cooler air, lower humidity, and foliage color from late September into late October. Special programs are held on the Anniversary of the Battle of Antietam on September 17, and the first Saturday in December.
Winter is quiet and cold, with occasional snow. The Antietam Illumination began in 1989 and is held every year on the first Saturday in December, an evening driving tour through the park amid 23,110 luminaries placed on the northern portion of Antietam National Battlefield, which draws heavy day-trip traffic.
How to book campgrounds near Fairplay
For Greenbrier State Park, reservations are required and can be made by visiting parkreservations.maryland.gov or calling 1-888-432-2267. The park has 165 campsites, including some with electric hookups and two pet-friendly loops, and campsite reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance. Campsites can book up fast, especially for peak season from June to September and holiday weekends, so book as far ahead as possible.
Private parks including Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Williamsport, Hagerstown / Antietam Battlefield KOA Holiday, Leatherman's/Falling Waters Campsite, and Harpers Ferry Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or brand booking portals. For summer weekends and event dates around Antietam anniversaries, secure sites well in advance and confirm the park accepts the length and slide configuration of the rental RV.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Fairplay is rolling farmland transitioning to forested ridges at South Mountain. Roads to state and national park sites are paved and RV-friendly, though some campground access lanes and battlefield tour roads are narrow, so larger Class A rigs should plan routes carefully.
At Greenbrier State Park, the entrance gate closes at sunset, and campers arriving after sunset should call the park directly for instructions. The Antietam National Battlefield Visitor Center is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, and the park grounds are open year-round from dawn until dusk. An entrance pass is required.
Expect a mix of RV-resort amenities at private parks (pools, playgrounds, laundry, full hookups) and quieter, more rustic sites at the state park. Cell coverage is generally reliable in the Hagerstown Valley but can drop in wooded loops and along river bottoms.

Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Fairplay. Maryland does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, even larger Class A motorhomes or fifth wheels you'd take down Route 65 toward Sharpsburg.
