Campgrounds near Galena, Maryland
Galena sits in northern Kent County on Maryland's Upper Eastern Shore, roughly midway between the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware line. The town is small and rural, but it works as a practical base for RV travelers because several established campgrounds sit within a short drive, along with the Chester and Sassafras rivers and the Bay's headwaters.
Duck Neck Campground is a family-oriented park with 356 full hook-up RV sites and a marina on Maryland's eastern shore, located on the Chester River near Chestertown. To the north, Elk Neck State Park sits between the Chesapeake Bay and the Elk River near the southern tip of the Elk Neck Peninsula in Cecil County, and Woodlands Camping Resort adds another Elk Neck Peninsula option with a mix of seasonal and transient sites plus cabins.
Holiday Park Campground and Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area, a 5,656-acre destination in Cecil County, Maryland, near the Pennsylvania and Delaware borders, round out the closest options for travelers willing to drive twenty to forty minutes from Galena.
Things to do near Galena
Water access defines most trips. The Chester River location is ideal for water-based activities including fishing, crabbing, and boating, and the Sassafras River just north of Galena is popular for paddling and small-boat cruising. Chestertown's historic waterfront, farmers market, and High Street shops are a short drive south.
At Elk Neck State Park, the park offers 6 miles of trails, a boat launch, unguarded swimming area, Nature Center, and Park Store. Over 250 campsites, mini cabins and Rustic Cabins provide the right experience for any camper. Visitors enjoy hiking to the Turkey Point Lighthouse, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, hunting, picnicking and camping. Fair Hill adds a different flavor: an extensive 80-mile trail system ideal for hiking, biking, and nature exploration, along with a disabled-accessible fishing pier on Big Elk Creek, plus a historic covered bridge and equestrian events.

The Upper Eastern Shore has four distinct seasons. Spring and fall are the most comfortable for RV travel, with mild days and cool nights. The best time of year to visit Chestertown is mid April to June and September to October, when trails, beaches, and river paddling are all in play without peak-summer humidity.
Summer is the busy season. Weekend sites at waterfront campgrounds book well in advance, and the air can feel uncomfortably humid during the summer months from July to August. Biting insects are active near marshes and creeks, so screens and repellent matter. Reserve early: at Elk Neck, reservations can be made up to one year in advance, and it's recommended to book early for summer weekends and holidays as the park is popular.
Winter is quiet and cold. Many private parks shift to limited operations, though the state park lists a year-round status for camping. Snow in Chestertown usually begins around December and ends by March. Chestertown receives relatively little snow, with an annual average of about 17 inches.
How to book campgrounds near Galena
Reservation systems vary by operator. For Elk Neck State Park, bookings go through the reservations center at 1-888-432-2267, Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or online at parkreservations.maryland.gov. Reservations can be made for today and can be made up to 365 days in advance, and the campground is divided into named loops with a mix of electric and water sites and non-electric sites.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Duck Neck Campground takes reservations through Campspot and by phone, and Woodlands Camping Resort and Holiday Park Campground book directly for transient stays. Fair Hill's camping is limited to equestrian pads and organized youth groups; contact the park office to arrange either.
What to expect on the ground
Expect flat to gently rolling terrain, farm country, and a lot of water. Roads into the campgrounds are RV-friendly, though some private parks have long access drives with speed bumps and gravel loops. Big-rig access is generally fine at the major parks; check length limits when booking specific sites.
Cell coverage is inconsistent outside town centers. Verizon coverage is available but spotty at Duck Neck, so download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival. Grocery runs are easiest in Chestertown, Middletown, Elkton, or across the Delaware line. Ticks and mosquitoes are common near woods and marshes from late spring through early fall.
Most parks are family-oriented with pools, playgrounds, and fishing. Seasonal campers with RVs, patios and additions occupy about 300 sites in a heavily wooded area at Duck Neck, so transient sites can be limited on peak weekends. Book the specific site type you need rather than accepting a generic assignment.

Many Eastern Shore campgrounds, including Duck Neck Campground in Chestertown, accept pets too. Pro tip: pack a towel, the Sassafras boat ramps are tempting and your dog will want a swim.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/eastern/Sassafras-NRMA.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or rental house in Galena, MD?
Yes, RV delivery in Galena, MD is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters. Many Eastern Shore hosts will drive the RV to your campground, riverside rental, or even a relative's driveway, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means zero stress about backing a 30-foot motorhome down narrow Main Street or onto a wooded site at Duck Neck Campground. To find these listings, use the Delivery filter on RVezy and check each host's delivery radius and fee, common drop spots include Chestertown, Rock Hall, Betterton, and Galena itself. Pro tip: book delivery early for summer weekends, it's the first option to sell out.
kentcounty.com/visitorsHow many miles do I get and can I find unlimited mileage on a Galena RV rental?

Martinak State Park near Denton is another solid pick about 40 miles south. Pro tip: Maryland State Park sites book exactly one year out, set a calendar reminder and grab summer weekends the morning they open.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/eastern/elkneck.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Galena, MD?
Galena shines from mid-April through late October, and there's a sweet spot for everyone. Spring (April to early June) brings 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, dogwoods in bloom, and the Galena Dogwood Festival, lovely for RV camping Galena style without summer crowds. Summer (June to August) runs 80 to 90 degrees with humidity and lots of Chesapeake events; book early. Fall (September to October) is arguably the best, 60 to 75 degrees, fewer mosquitoes, and golden marsh views along the Sassafras River. Winter is mild but damp (30s to 50s) and most campgrounds close. Pro tip: October weekends often have great rates and the crabs are at their fattest, locals call them "heavy" crabs.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay renting in Galena?
You'll be just fine, this is exactly the kind of place first-time renting an RV feels easy. Galena and Kent County are mostly flat, with quiet two-lane roads like Route 213 and Route 290 and very little traffic compared to the western shore. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, the propane system, and the dump process, no guessing. If nerves are still creeping in, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental Galena listing, or pick a host who offers delivery so you skip the highway drive entirely. Pro tip: do a slow practice loop around the Galena Town Hall parking lot before heading out.
fmcsa.dot.gov/safety/driver-safety/cmv-driving-tips-driving-rvs-and-trailersWhat happens if something breaks down during my Galena RV trip?
You are never on your own. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you have it ready if you ever need to call for help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trip routes from Galena, MD?
You are perfectly placed for a classic Mid-Atlantic RV road trip from Galena, MD. Favorite routes include the Chesapeake Country National Scenic Byway down through Chestertown, Rock Hall, and Kent Island (about 50 miles of waterfront cruising), the Delaware beaches loop east to Cape Henlopen State Park (about 75 miles), Ocean City and Assateague Island National Seashore to see the wild ponies (about 110 miles southeast), and a colonial history run north to Philadelphia and Valley Forge (roughly 70 to 90 miles). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and added documentation, but travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy bookings. Pro tip: drive the byway at sunset, the Sassafras River views are unforgettable.
fhwa.dot.gov/byways/byways/2434What fuel mileage should I expect and how should I budget for gas?
Fuel is very manageable on Eastern Shore trips because distances are short and terrain is flat. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, Class A coaches 7 to 10 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer about 10 to 14 MPG. Maryland gas prices generally run a bit above the national average, with stations in Galena, Chestertown, and Middletown, DE being your most convenient fill-ups. A typical 4-day Galena RV trip covering 250 to 400 miles will run roughly $120 to $300 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: top up in Delaware when you cross over, the price difference often beats Maryland by 10 to 20 cents a gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Galena, MD?
Earlier is better, but you have options at every timeline. Maryland State Parks like Elk Neck, Tuckahoe, and Martinak open reservations exactly one year in advance through ReserveAmerica, and summer weekends fill within days. Private parks like Duck Neck Campground in Chestertown typically open 6 to 12 months out and are slightly easier to grab. For a spontaneous family RV trip Galena weekend, aim for shoulder months (April, May, September, October) when weekday sites are often wide open. Pro tip: if your dream weekend is booked, set up alerts on ReserveAmerica, cancellations pop up constantly two to three weeks before holidays. And don't forget you can also park at private host-approved spots arranged with delivery.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/Reservations.aspxWhat are driving conditions like in and around Galena, MD?
Driving here is refreshingly easy, one reason renting in Galena is great for first-timers. Most roads are flat, two-lane rural highways like US-301, MD-213, and MD-291, with light traffic outside of summer beach weekends. Watch for a few things: the US-301 corridor gets busy Friday afternoons heading to Delaware beaches, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (US-50) can crawl on summer Saturdays so cross early morning or late evening, and rural roads have occasional deer and slow-moving farm equipment, especially at dawn and dusk. Galena's Main Street is narrow and historic, so use the wider routes like MD-313 when you can. Pro tip: download the MDOT CHART app for live Bay Bridge traffic before you head west.
chart.maryland.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Galena, MD?
You'll find a great range, from full-service resorts to peaceful state park loops. Private parks like Duck Neck Campground typically offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer hookups, Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, a pool, and a camp store. Maryland State Parks like Elk Neck and Tuckahoe offer electric and water at most sites with a centralized dump station, bathhouses, and potable water fills, but limited sewer hookups, so plan to dump on your way out. Need to refill or empty mid-trip? Duck Neck and Lankford Bay both offer dump services for non-guests for a small fee. Pro tip: carry 25 feet of fresh water hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter, Eastern Shore site layouts vary more than you'd think.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/Camping-In-Maryland.aspxWhat features and amenities come with the RV itself?
Eastern Shore listings are loaded for comfort. A typical motorhome rental Galena includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunks (sleeping 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted travel seats for every passenger. Many also offer a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and an onboard generator. Wi-Fi varies, hotspot signal on Verizon and AT&T is strong around Galena but spotty in marsh areas, so ask hosts if they include a mobile hotspot. Pro tip: check listing photos for an outdoor awning and exterior kitchen, both turn a Sassafras River campsite into pure vacation mode.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my Galena RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy make customizing easy. Common add-ons for rent an RV in Galena trips include linen and towel packs ($25 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), portable generators ($25 to $50/night), bike racks, kayak racks, outdoor camp chairs, fire pits, and pet packages. Pickup usually happens at the host's home base in Galena, Chestertown, Rock Hall, or nearby Delaware towns, with a thorough orientation that takes 30 to 60 minutes. Mileage policies vary, most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day with extras at 35 to 50 cents per mile, and some offer unlimited mileage packages for longer trips. Pro tip: bundle add-ons in your initial booking, it's faster than adding them later and hosts often discount the package.
kentcounty.com/visitorsHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully online, no cash or paper paperwork at pickup. When you book your RV rental in Galena, MD you will pay a portion up front through the secure RVezy checkout, with the balance due before your trip starts. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is pre-authorized (held, not charged) on your card a few days before pickup, then released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, this typically takes a few business days. To avoid issues, do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's fuel and dump-tank instructions, and message any concerns through the RVezy platform so there is a record. Pro tip: clean dishes and empty trash before dropoff, it is the easiest way to keep your deposit smooth.
