Campgrounds near Highfield-Cascade
Highfield-Cascade sits in northern Frederick County, Maryland, on the ridge of South Mountain near the Pennsylvania line. The area is the meeting point of two adjoining park systems: Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park sit close together, with the William Houck Area off Route 77 and the Manor Area off Route 15, and just north across the state line is Pennsylvania's Caledonia State Park. Together they give RV travelers a concentrated cluster of forested, mountain-ridge campgrounds within a short drive of the town.
The closest option is Owens Creek Campground inside Catoctin Mountain Park, a National Park Service site. Cunningham Falls State Park has campsites in both the William Houck Area and the Manor Area, both operated by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. North of the state line, Caledonia State Park has 2 campgrounds including Chinquapin Hill (sites 1 to 130) and Hosack Run (sites 131 to 185).
For RVers who want full hookups and a resort-style base for Gettysburg and the surrounding battlefield country, Granite Hill Campground is a large private option a short drive north.
Things to do near Highfield-Cascade
Hiking dominates the area. Catoctin Mountain Park boasts 25 miles of trails ranging from easy to strenuous, and the Catoctin Trail links Gambrill State Park through Cunningham Falls State Park and on into Catoctin Mountain Park. The Appalachian Trail also crosses through Caledonia State Park to the north.
Cunningham Falls is the marquee attraction. The park is named for its stunning 78-foot cascading waterfall, the highest in Maryland, accessible via hiking trails from the campground. Hunting Creek Lake sits 43 acres below the Houck campground, accessible by car rather than foot trail, and swimming, fishing, and boat rentals are available in the Houck Area.
For a change of pace, the Manor Area off Route 15 has the Scales and Tales Aviary, the historic Catoctin Iron Furnace and a camping area, and Gettysburg National Military Park is roughly a half-hour drive north.

The camping calendar in this area is short. Owens Creek Campground at Catoctin Mountain Park is typically open from late April until October 31st, and the William Houck Area Campground opens at the beginning of April and closes at the end of October annually. The Chinquapin Hill campground runs from mid-April through late October. Peak demand is Memorial Day through Labor Day, with fall foliage weekends in October also filling early.
Winter access is limited but not zero. Primitive camping at the Manor Area Campground is available Nov. 1 through March 31. The bathhouse is closed for the winter, but a portable toilet is available. The area might close due to severe weather. Reservations are required for primitive camping. Cunningham Falls State Park's overall status is open year round, and Granite Hill operates year-round as well.
Black bears are active in the Catoctins from spring through fall, so food storage rules apply at every site.

How to book campgrounds near Highfield-Cascade
Each park uses its own reservation system. For Owens Creek, all reservations must be made in advance via Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777. Walk-in reservations are not accepted. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance.
For Cunningham Falls State Park's Houck and Manor campgrounds, make a reservation online or by calling 1-888-432-CAMP through the Maryland state parks reservation portal, with a booking window up to 365 days in advance. Caledonia State Park uses the Pennsylvania state parks system, and reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance.
Granite Hill Campground takes reservations directly through the resort. Reservations are recommended for both the William Houck and Manor Area campgrounds since they often fill weeks or months in advance, so book summer and fall weekends as early as possible.
What to expect at Highfield-Cascade campgrounds
Sites in this area are wooded and mountainous, and hookups vary by park. Owens Creek is the most rustic option for RVers: there are three campsites for RVs no longer than 30 feet: campsites 12, 39, and 43, and no hookups are available. Cunningham Falls' Houck loops include a mix of non-electric and electric sites, and amenities include drinking water, flush toilets and hot showers, plus a camp store, snack bar, dump station, playground, picnic area and boat ramp.
Cell coverage is inconsistent. Mobile phone coverage is often lost once near or inside the park, so plan accordingly. Download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival.
Wildlife and firewood rules matter here. Black bears are present in the Catoctins, so keep food and garbage secure. No firewood can be brought into the campground from outside Catoctin Mountain Park, so buy local firewood on-site or nearby.

rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Highfield-Cascade RV rental?

If life happens, including weather events on South Mountain or schedule changes, RVezy's support team is available to help you understand your options. The exact refund window depends on how far out your trip is, but the policy is built into every listing. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credits. Pro tip: book your rent an RV in Highfield-Cascade dates as soon as you can to secure the best rigs for fall foliage.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Highfield-Cascade?
Absolutely, and this area is a tail-wagger's dream. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Highfield-Cascade options, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see them instantly. Owens Creek Campground inside Catoctin Mountain Park allows leashed pets (6-foot leash required per 36 CFR 2.15), and Cunningham Falls State Park welcomes dogs in designated loops. The Deerfield Nature Trail starts right at Owens Creek and is perfect for a morning sniff-walk with your pup. Local insider tip: Pen Mar Park, just minutes from Cascade, is leash-friendly with sweeping Cumberland Valley views your dog will love as much as you do.
nps.gov/cato/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home in the Highfield-Cascade area?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start a trip. RV delivery Highfield-Cascade is offered by many RVezy hosts in the area, they'll drop the rig at your driveway, your campsite at Cunningham Falls State Park, or even Gettysburg/Battlefield KOA just over the Pennsylvania line. Your host will level the RV, hook up water and power if available, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter when searching to see hosts who offer this. It's especially handy if you're nervous about backing into a wooded site at William Houck Campground or you'd rather skip towing through the mountain switchbacks entirely.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/CunninghamFalls.aspxHow does mileage work, and how far can I travel from Highfield-Cascade?
You've got plenty of road to roam. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, and many offer RV rental with unlimited mileage or generous daily allowances that easily cover a regional loop. From Highfield-Cascade you can reach Gettysburg National Military Park in about 20 minutes, Antietam National Battlefield in roughly 30 minutes, Harpers Ferry in about 45 minutes, Shenandoah National Park in around 2 hours, and Washington, D.C. in about 90 minutes. For a longer RV road trip from Highfield-Cascade, Assateague Island's wild ponies are about 3.5 hours east. Pro tip: review the mileage details on each listing before booking so you can match the package to your route.
nps.gov/gett/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Highfield-Cascade, MD?
You'll be spoiled for choice. Some of the best campgrounds near Highfield-Cascade include Owens Creek Campground in Catoctin Mountain Park (primitive, max 30-foot RVs, no hookups, open late April through October), William Houck Campground at Cunningham Falls State Park (142 sites, some with electric, near Maryland's tallest waterfall), Gambrill State Park's Rock Run Area Campground (13 sites with some electric hookups), Granite Hill Camping Resort (full hookups, family-friendly), and Gettysburg/Battlefield KOA (full-service with pull-throughs, cable, and Wi-Fi). Local insider tip: Cunningham Falls is the nearest dump station to Catoctin since Owens Creek doesn't have one, so plan your route accordingly.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/247762When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Highfield-Cascade?
Honestly, three seasons shine here. Sitting at roughly 1,300 to 1,900 feet in the Blue Ridge, Highfield-Cascade enjoys cooler summers than nearby Frederick, with July highs around 82 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and pleasant evenings in the 60s. Spring (April to early June) brings wildflowers and mild 60-to-75-degree days. Fall (late September through October) is the local favorite, with brilliant foliage on the Catoctin ridges and crisp 50-to-70-degree days, perfect for RV camping Highfield-Cascade. Winters dip below freezing with occasional snow, so check listings for four-season rigs. Pro tip: book a Pen Mar Park weekend in mid-October for the fall colors locals quietly guard.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I know what I'm doing?
Yes, and you'll feel like a pro by lunch. First time renting an RV is exactly what RVezy is built for. Your host provides a full walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering the generator, water, propane, slides, and dump procedures, and they're usually a quick message away during your trip. You can message hosts before booking to ask anything, from how the awning works to whether the rig fits at Owens Creek. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome rental Highfield-Cascade for your first trip, they drive much like a big van, and pair it with a delivered setup at William Houck Campground so you can skip the towing learning curve entirely.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/Camping.aspxWhat happens if I break down or have a problem on the road?
You're never on your own. Every Highfield-Cascade RV trip on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if needed. Whether you're climbing the curves of MD-77 toward Catoctin, parked at Antietam Battlefield, or rolling through Gettysburg, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a direct resource for quirks specific to their rig, like restarting the generator or resetting a slide. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Translation: you can relax, take the scenic Pen Mar Road, and trust that backup is built in.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take the RV across state lines or into Canada?
You bet, and that's part of the fun. Highfield-Cascade sits right on the Pennsylvania border, so crossing into Gettysburg, Hershey, or Lancaster County is effortless, and West Virginia (Harpers Ferry) and Virginia (Shenandoah) are short drives away. Interstate travel is standard on RVezy bookings. Heading to Canada is possible with some hosts depending on their insurance, just message the host through the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Popular multi-state routes from Highfield-Cascade include the Civil War Trail (MD-PA-VA-WV) and the Blue Ridge run south toward Skyline Drive.
nps.gov/hafe/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Highfield-Cascade RV trip?
Fuel is easier to plan than most people think. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), campervans average 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Maryland gas prices typically hover near the national average, with stations in nearby Thurmont, Waynesboro (PA), and Hagerstown offering competitive pricing, fill up before heading up MD-550 since options thin out in the mountains. For a 3-night loop covering Catoctin, Antietam, and Gettysburg (roughly 150 miles total), budget around $60 to $90 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: GasBuddy and Mountain Gate Truck Stop near Thurmont consistently have the area's better diesel prices.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Highfield-Cascade?
Sooner is better, especially for the gems. Catoctin Mountain Park's Owens Creek Campground and Cunningham Falls State Park's William Houck Campground both open reservations up to 6 months in advance through Recreation.gov and Maryland State Parks' reservation system, respectively, and summer weekends sell out fast. For private parks like Granite Hill or Gettysburg/Battlefield KOA, 2 to 3 months ahead is usually safe outside major holidays. For fall foliage weekends in October, book by early summer. Pro tip: use Campnab or set Recreation.gov alerts for cancellations, last-minute openings at Owens Creek often pop up midweek, perfect for a spontaneous family RV trip Highfield-Cascade.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2621What are the driving conditions like around Highfield-Cascade?
Scenic, manageable, and worth the curves. Highfield-Cascade sits in the Blue Ridge foothills, so expect winding two-lane roads like MD-550 and PA-16, with steep grades around High Rock and Pen Mar. Take it slow, use lower gears on descents, and you'll be fine even in a 30-foot Class C. Summer thunderstorms can roll in fast, and winter brings occasional snow and ice above 1,500 feet, so check Maryland 511 before you roll. Avoid Park Central Road during posted closures inside Catoctin Mountain Park. Local insider tip: skip rush-hour I-270 south of Frederick and take US-15 instead for a calmer, more scenic ride toward D.C.
chart.maryland.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Highfield-Cascade?
You'll find everything from rustic to resort. Cunningham Falls State Park's William Houck Campground has 142 sites with electric hookups available, hot showers, flush toilets, and a dump station, plus a lake beach. Catoctin's Owens Creek is primitive (no hookups, no dump, max 30-foot RVs) but has flush toilets, showers, and drinking water. Granite Hill and Gettysburg/Battlefield KOA offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. For water fills and dumps en route, Cunningham Falls is the closest public dump station to Highfield-Cascade. Pro tip: if you're at Owens Creek, top up water at the central spigot before settling in, individual sites don't have spigots.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/CunninghamFalls.aspxWhat's inside the RVs available in Highfield-Cascade?
More comforts than you'd expect. Most RVezy rentals near Highfield-Cascade come fully equipped: real beds (queen or king in many Class Cs), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (AC and furnace), seatbelts for travel, and dining areas that convert to extra sleeping space. Many include a TV, Bluetooth speakers, and an onboard generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi varies, some hosts provide a hotspot, and cell service is patchy inside Catoctin Mountain Park (Verizon performs best). Check each listing's amenities tab to confirm. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count to match your group, then message hosts about extras like bedding, cookware, and outdoor chairs.
nps.gov/cato/planyourvisit/cellservice.htmWhat add-ons and options can I get with my RV rental?
Plenty, and they make the trip smoother. Common add-ons on RVezy include linen and kitchen kits, camp chairs, outdoor grills, generators, bike racks, propane refills, and dump service so you don't have to do it yourself. Pickup and drop-off are usually at the host's location, but many offer delivery within a set radius of Highfield-Cascade (often covering Thurmont, Waynesboro, and Gettysburg). Mileage policies vary, some hosts offer unlimited, others include 100 to 150 free miles per day with a small per-mile fee beyond that. Pro tip: bundle a delivery and setup add-on with a Cunningham Falls campsite reservation, then have the host pick it up at trip's end, your only job is enjoying the waterfall hike.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/CunninghamFallsCamping.aspxHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It's straightforward and secure. You pay through RVezy's platform (never cash to the host), with major credit cards accepted, and your booking total is locked in at checkout. Each host sets a refundable security deposit that's pre-authorized on your card before the trip and released after the RV is returned in the same condition. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment. Typical deposits for an RV rental in Highfield-Cascade range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig. To avoid hiccups, document the RV's condition with photos at pickup, follow the host's dump and fuel-return instructions, and stay within the agreed mileage. Pro tip: message your host the day before pickup to confirm timing.
