Camping near Lake Shore, Maryland
Lake Shore is a waterfront community on the Hog Neck peninsula in Anne Arundel County, sitting between the Magothy River and the Chesapeake Bay east of Pasadena. The peninsula is bordered by tidal inlets, with the Magothy River to the south and Main Creek to the northeast. The area functions as a suburb of Baltimore, with easy road access to both Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
RV renters use Lake Shore as a base for Chesapeake Bay boating, Anne Arundel County parks, and day trips into the two nearby metros. There is no campground inside the community itself, so RV travelers typically stay at parks in the surrounding corridor, including Bay Shore Campground on the peninsula, Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area to the northwest, and Greenbelt Park Campground and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday closer to the capital.
Mountain Road (MD 177) is the main route in and out, so plan arrivals outside Baltimore-Washington rush hours to avoid slow crawls on the peninsula.
Things to do around Lake Shore
The Chesapeake Bay shoreline drives most activity: fishing piers, paddling on the Magothy River, small pocket beaches, and marina days. Downs Park, on the tip of the peninsula, has a fishing pier, shoreline trails, and picnic areas that work well for a half-day out from a campsite.
Inland, Patapsco Valley State Park anchors a long river corridor with hiking, mountain biking, horseback trails, and river fishing, and features a view of the historic Thomas Viaduct in the Avalon Area. The Hollofield Area is the RV-oriented section of the park when open, sitting along Route 40 between Baltimore and Ellicott City.
Washington, D.C. day trips from Greenbelt Park Campground or Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday put the National Mall, Smithsonian museums, and monuments within a short Metro ride, all free to enter.

Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping in the Lake Shore area. May, June, September, and early October combine warm days, cooler nights, and lower humidity than midsummer, and bugs are less aggressive than in July and August.
Summer is peak season for Chesapeake Bay activity and family travel. Expect hot, humid afternoons, frequent pop-up thunderstorms, and full campgrounds on weekends. Book state park and popular private sites well ahead: reservations for Maryland state parks are handled through the Maryland Park Service reservation system and the most popular sites fill quickly for summer weekends.
Winter narrows options. The Hollofield Area campground at Patapsco Valley State Park normally operates seasonally from April through October, and is currently closed for renovations, so cold-season RV trips generally rely on private parks and the National Park Service site at Greenbelt Park, which stays open year-round. Snowfall is usually light, but ice storms and quick freezes do happen.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

Both VANessa and Vanessa were awesome. All the amenities are thoughtfully available. Van drove well and my son and I had a trip we’ll talk about for years and remember forever. Vanessa is a great communicator and great person. 5+ stars.

Had an amazing travel experience with VANessa and Vanessa was a joy to work with. So very accommodating. The van is beautiful and has everything you could want. Even my pup Seamus gave it two paws up!

How to book a campsite
Reservation systems vary by campground type. Maryland state park sites, including Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area when it reopens, are booked through the Maryland Park Service reservation portal at parkreservations.maryland.gov. Reservations are available up to 365 days in advance of the arrival date, and new inventory becomes available at 9 a.m. on days the call center is open. Set a calendar reminder for the 365-day window if a specific summer weekend matters.
National Park Service sites at Greenbelt Park Campground are booked through Recreation.gov, with a booking window of up to six months in advance. Private parks such as Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday, Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC, and Bay Shore Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or booking systems, often with shorter lead-time requirements but tight summer availability.
What to expect on arrival
Check RV height before routing to Patapsco Valley State Park. Campers whose units are over 11 feet 1 inch in height must enter via the Route 40 East entrance, since other approaches have low bridges. Standard Class C and travel-trailer rentals usually clear, but confirm the exact height of the rig.
At state park campgrounds in the region, expect wooded sites with picnic tables and fire rings, some with electric hookups, and camping equipment kept on the designated pad only. Greenbelt Park is tent-focused, though the D loop accommodates RVs up to posted length limits shown at booking. Private parks such as the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday offer more open, full-hookup sites.
A maximum of six people, including visitors, is typical per site at Maryland state parks, with two vehicles allowed if space permits. Bring bug spray, a water hose long enough to reach offset spigots, and a surge protector for older electric pedestals.
