Camping near Lochearn, Maryland
Lochearn is an unincorporated community in Baltimore County, tucked between the northwest edge of Baltimore City and the Patapsco River valley. For RV travelers, it functions as a base for exploring both Baltimore and Washington, D.C., with easy access to I-695, I-70, and I-95. There are no campgrounds inside Lochearn itself, so all overnight options sit in the surrounding counties and require a short drive.
The closest public option is Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area, located off Route 40 (Baltimore National Pike) in Ellicott City and home to one of the park's camping areas. Private parks in the wider region include Ramblin' Pines in Woodbine, Merry Meadows Recreation Farm in Freeland, Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday in Millersville, and Cherry Hill Park in College Park.
Together these five properties cover most trip styles: state-park camping in the woods, family resort-style parks with pools and activities, and full-service RV parks positioned for sightseeing in D.C. and Baltimore.
Things to do near Lochearn
Patapsco Valley State Park is the dominant outdoor draw, spanning 32 miles along the Patapsco River with eight recreation areas. The park offers 70 miles of hiking, biking, and multi-use trails, along with river access for fishing and paddling. The Hollofield section adds picnic areas and a scenic overlook of the Patapsco River Valley.
City trips are easy from any of the listed campgrounds. Baltimore's Inner Harbor, the National Aquarium, and Camden Yards are a short drive east. From the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday in Millersville and Cherry Hill Park in College Park, travelers can reach the National Mall, the Smithsonian museums, and the U.S. Capitol, and both parks are positioned for public-transit access into the city. Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay are also within day-trip range.

Central Maryland has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping, with mild days, cool nights, and lower humidity. Fall color along the Patapsco River Valley is a notable draw as the surrounding hardwoods turn.
Summer is peak season. Baltimore regularly gets 90-degree Fahrenheit weather, and a day in the 90s can occur as early as April or as late as October. Thunderstorms and high humidity are common from June through August, so shaded sites and hookups with air conditioning are worth prioritizing. Booking well ahead is important for holiday weekends and themed events at family parks.
Winter camping is possible but limited. The Hollofield area campground has been closed for renovations, while the Hollofield day use area remains open regular hours, and several private parks reduce services or close loops in the coldest months. Cherry Hill Park and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday operate year-round, though pools and some outdoor amenities are seasonal.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

How to book campsites near Lochearn
State-park sites at Patapsco Valley are reserved through the Maryland Park Service reservation system. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 365 days in advance, and travelers should confirm current status before booking, since the Hollofield campground has been closed for renovations. Campers whose units exceed 11 feet 1 inch in height must enter the park by the Route 40 East Entrance.
Private parks book directly. The Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday reserves through the KOA website or by phone, with seven days of cancellation notice required for RV and tent sites, called in by 4 p.m. seven days before arrival. Ramblin' Pines, Merry Meadows Recreation Farm, and Cherry Hill Park take reservations through their own sites; holiday weekends and themed events fill months in advance.
What to expect at campgrounds near Lochearn
Sites in this region vary widely. Patapsco Valley's Hollofield loop is a wooded state-park setting with basic infrastructure: 73 campsites, some with electric hookups, each with a picnic table and a fire ring. Expect designated camping pads, limited privacy between sites, and a two-week maximum stay.
Private parks lean toward full-service and family recreation. Ramblin' Pines has 200 campsites, 190 with full hookups, sites that accommodate slide-outs, and 12 pull-through sites, along with a pool, mini-golf, and organized weekend activities from May through October. Merry Meadows Recreation Farm sits in northern Baltimore County with tent, RV, and cabin options. Cherry Hill Park and the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday offer resort-style amenities with pools, activities, and DC access.
Cell service is generally strong across the region, but wooded state-park sites can be spotty. Several private parks have hilly terrain, so bring leveling blocks.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Lochearn, MD?
Renting an RV in Lochearn is budget-friendly compared to Baltimore-area hotels. On RVezy, travel trailers near Baltimore typically range from about $90 to $150 a night, while motorhomes generally run $175 to $275, and many hosts offer 10 to 20 percent discounts on weekly and monthly bookings. For a cheap RV rental in Lochearn, filter by towable trailers and travel outside summer holidays when prices dip. Pro tip: booking a midweek Tuesday to Thursday RV trip from Lochearn often unlocks the lowest nightly rates, and choosing a host who includes add-ons like generator hours or kitchen kits stretches your budget further.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lochearn%2C%20MarylandDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Lochearn, Maryland?
Good news: for the vast majority of RV rentals in Lochearn, your regular Class C driver's license is all you need. The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) only requires a non-commercial Class B license for single vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and nearly every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, and fifth wheel on RVezy falls well under that limit. You must be at least 25 years old to book, and your ID is verified right inside the RVezy platform. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license, and you're set to hit the road.
mva.maryland.gov/drivers/Pages/recreational-vehicle-info.aspxWhat protection comes with my RV rental in Lochearn?
Every RV rental in Lochearn comes with an RVezy renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-695 or the Baltimore Beltway with real peace of mind. At checkout you choose your protection level, and the plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip. Roadside support is one phone call away if you get a flat on I-83 heading to Pennsylvania or need a jump start at Patapsco Valley State Park. This isn't traditional auto insurance, but it's substantial financial protection designed for everyday road-trip mishaps, so first time renters can relax and enjoy the drive.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Lochearn RV booking?
You're covered with flexibility built into every booking. RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy, and there's a grace period after booking when you can cancel for a full refund. Refund amounts after the grace period depend on how far out you are from your trip start date, and the policy accounts for special circumstances. The full cancellation policy is published in the RVezy Help Center, so you always know where you stand. Pro tip: book early to secure the best Class C motorhomes near Baltimore, knowing your plans can flex if life changes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Lochearn?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Lochearn is easy to find. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts who welcome dogs at no extra hassle. Baltimore County has plenty of leash-friendly green space, including Patapsco Valley State Park's Hilton Area just minutes south and the dog-friendly trails at Lake Roland Park less than 15 minutes east of Lochearn. Maryland state park campgrounds allow leashed pets at designated loops. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and bring a portable water bowl, since Baltimore summers are humid.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/Pets-In-Parks.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Lochearn?
Yes, RV delivery in Lochearn is one of the most popular options, especially for first time renters who'd rather skip driving a motorhome through Baltimore traffic. Many hosts will tow or drive the RV right to your driveway in the 21207 area, to Patapsco Valley State Park's Hollofield Campground, or to Bar Harbor RV Park in Abingdon, then handle the leveling, hookups, and a full walkthrough. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it and the per-mile rate. Pro tip: ask for setup at your campsite so you arrive to a turnkey RV with the awning out and the fridge already cold.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lochearn%2C%20MarylandHow far can I travel from Lochearn on a typical RV rental?
Lochearn is one of the best East Coast launch pads for an RV road trip. From here you can reach Washington, D.C. in under an hour (40 miles), Assateague Island National Seashore in about 3 hours (140 miles), Shenandoah National Park in roughly 2.5 hours (120 miles), Gettysburg, PA in about an hour (55 miles), and the Outer Banks of North Carolina in around 6 hours. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for long trips. Check the listing's daily mileage allowance and weekly add-on rate before booking to keep your budget tight.
nps.gov/asis/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Lochearn, MD?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Lochearn. Patapsco Valley State Park (Hollofield Area) is just 10 minutes away with electric sites, a dump station, and over 200 miles of trails along the Patapsco River. Ramblin' Pines Family Campground in Woodbine is about 25 minutes west and offers full hookups and a pool. Bar Harbor RV Park & Marina in Abingdon, around 30 minutes northeast, sits right on the water with shaded sites. Merry Meadows Recreation Farm near Freeland is a classic family pick about 45 minutes north. Book Maryland state park sites 3 to 6 months ahead, especially for summer weekends.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/central/Patapsco.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Lochearn?
The sweet spot for an RV rental in Maryland is mid-April through mid-June and again from early September through late October. Daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 80 degree Fahrenheit range, humidity drops, and fall foliage along the Patapsco and Gunpowder rivers is stunning. July and August get hot and sticky with average highs near 89 degrees and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so book an RV with strong air conditioning if you're traveling then. Winter rentals are available too, with snow possible December through March, making heated tanks and electric hookups a must. Local insider tip: target the last two weekends of October for peak color in Patapsco Valley.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Lochearn really doable?
Renting an RV for the first time in Lochearn is completely doable, and most guests are surprised by how smooth it goes. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, propane, holding tanks, and how to back into a campsite. If Baltimore Beltway traffic on I-695 makes you nervous, choose a Class B campervan or a smaller Class C under 25 feet, or simply pick a host who offers delivery. You can message hosts directly through the listing with any pre-booking questions. Pro tip: do a short practice loop around a quiet lot before merging onto I-70 west toward your campground.
mva.maryland.gov/safety/Pages/Safe-Driving.aspxWhat if something goes wrong with the RV on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing whether you're parked at Gunpowder Falls State Park or rolling down I-95 toward D.C. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip if anything comes up. Your host is typically a quick text away too, since they know their RV inside and out. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before pickup, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate so you have the details handy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lochearn RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals from Lochearn, which makes sense given you're 30 minutes from Pennsylvania, an hour from Delaware, and within easy reach of Virginia, West Virginia, and New Jersey. Popular routes include Lochearn to Gettysburg and Lancaster County, Lochearn down to Shenandoah, and a coastal run to Cape Henlopen or Ocean City. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance, so confirm with them through the listing before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted because insurance coverage does not extend there. Plan your border-crossing route in advance for the smoothest trip.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel costs and mileage should I budget for?
Budgeting fuel for an RV road trip from Lochearn is straightforward. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans 16 to 22, and your tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer usually sees 9 to 13. Maryland gas prices generally run a touch above the national average, and you'll find plenty of large-vehicle-friendly stations along I-695, I-70, and US-40 near Lochearn, including Wawa and Royal Farms locations with high-clearance pumps. Pro tip: fill up in Pennsylvania on your way north (often 20 to 40 cents cheaper per gallon) and use the GasBuddy app to spot the best prices along your route.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campsite near Lochearn?
For the best campgrounds near Lochearn, book as early as you can. Maryland state parks like Patapsco Valley (Hollofield), Gunpowder Falls, and Susquehanna State Park open reservations up to 12 months in advance through the Maryland Park Service reservation system, and prime summer weekends fill within days of release. Private parks like Bar Harbor RV Park and Ramblin' Pines typically book 2 to 4 months out for peak season. For shoulder season trips in April, May, September, and October, 3 to 6 weeks ahead is usually fine. Local insider tip: weekday arrivals are far easier to score, and many campgrounds offer mid-week discounts.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/Reservations.aspxWhat are local driving conditions like around Lochearn?
Driving an RV around Lochearn is manageable with a little planning. The I-695 Baltimore Beltway loops right past town and is the easiest way to skip downtown narrow streets, low bridges, and the Fort McHenry and Harbor tunnels (which restrict propane and prohibit certain RVs). Avoid the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895) and Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) with propane on board; instead take I-695 over the Francis Scott Key Bridge replacement route or I-83 north. Rush hour on I-695 and I-83 gets heavy from 7-9 AM and 4-6 PM. Pro tip: pick up your RV mid-morning or on a weekend to glide out of the metro stress-free.
mdta.maryland.gov/Tunnels_HAZMAT.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Lochearn?
Campgrounds near Lochearn run the full spectrum, so you can match your comfort level. Maryland state parks like Patapsco Valley and Gunpowder Falls offer electric hookups (usually 30-amp), potable water spigots, dump stations, hot showers, and flush toilets. Private parks like Bar Harbor RV Park and Ramblin' Pines step it up with 50-amp full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, pools, and camp stores. Dump stations are widely available at state parks and most major travel centers along I-95. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving Lochearn since some state park spigots are seasonal, and download the Sanidumps app to locate dump points along your route.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/central/Patapsco.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Lochearn?
RVs listed in Lochearn come fully equipped to live in from day one. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunk beds for kids, a kitchen with a fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, plus roof air conditioning and a furnace for chilly Maryland nights. Most rentals include seatbelts for every passenger, a generator or solar setup, and many offer Wi-Fi hotspots or a TV. Class A and larger Class C motorhomes often add washer/dryer combos and outdoor kitchens. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenity list, and message the host to confirm bedding, towels, and kitchen kits are included.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
Hosts in Lochearn offer a menu of useful add-ons to customize your trip. Common ones include linen and towel packages, fully-stocked kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor tables, propane refills, generator hour packages, bike racks, and pet cleaning fees. Each RV listing spells out the daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 miles per day, with unlimited mileage options on some) and the cost per extra mile. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near the 21207 ZIP, with delivery available for an additional fee. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking rather than after pickup, and confirm the dropoff time window so you're not rushed on your last morning.
visitmaryland.org/things-to-do/campingHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, and your funds are protected by the platform rather than sent to the host directly. A refundable security deposit is held separately before your trip starts to cover any incidentals like minor cleaning, late return, or extra mileage, and it's released back to your card after a successful return inspection. The exact deposit amount is shown on each RV listing. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a quick video of the RV's interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff, so any condition questions are easy to resolve and your deposit comes back fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my RV rental into downtown Baltimore or D.C.?
You can, but you'll want a plan. Downtown Baltimore has narrow streets, low parking garages (most under 7 feet), and tunnel restrictions on propane, so most renters park their RV at a campground like Patapsco Valley's Hollofield Area and use Light Rail, Metro, or rideshare to explore the Inner Harbor, Fells Point, and the National Mall. Cherry Hill Park in College Park even offers a direct D.C. shuttle. Pro tip: keep your motorhome rental in Lochearn parked in nature and treat the cities as easy day trips, which saves fuel, parking headaches, and your nerves.
