Campgrounds and RV parks near Mayo, MD

Mayo sits inside the Chesapeake Bay recreation belt. Boating, crabbing, fishing, and paddling on the South and Rhode Rivers are the core activities, and county parks on the peninsula offer beach access, piers, and picnic areas. Downtown Annapolis and the U.S. Naval Academy are a short drive north. Washington, D.C. is roughly a 30 to 45-minute drive, putting the National Mall, Smithsonian museums, and monuments within day-trip range. Anne Arundel County maintains an extensive network of trails for hiking, biking, and rollerblading. Inland, Cedarville State Forest protects the headwaters of Zekiah Swamp and carries hiking, mountain-bike, and equestrian trails, plus a fishing pond and wildlife viewing. Greenbelt Park adds about ten miles of forested trails and free Saturday evening ranger programs during the season.

The camping season on the Chesapeake runs strong from spring through fall. Cedarville State Forest's family campground is open from April to October and closes for the winter, so the shoulder months are the last chance for a state-forest stay in this corridor. Bay Shore Campground operates as a seasonal park with many long-term sites, and transient waterfront spots are typically available from spring into late fall. Greenbelt Park Campground is open year-round and takes reservations on a six-month rolling window through Recreation.gov. Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC and Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday also run year-round, which makes them a fallback when the state forest is closed. Peak demand runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, and holiday weekends fill early. Summer heat and humidity are real; spring and fall bring the most comfortable RV weather. Ticks are active in spring and summer across the region, so treat clothing and gear accordingly. Occasional tropical systems can affect the mid-Atlantic in late summer and early fall.

Expect a mix of primitive and full-hookup camping depending on the park. Cedarville State Forest offers family sites with electric on the inner loop and primitive sites on the outer loop, a central bathhouse, and vault-style facilities across the forest. Greenbelt Park has flush toilets, hot showers, drinking-water spigots, and a dump station, but no electric, water, or sewer at individual sites, and vehicle-length limits vary by loop and are listed per site on Recreation.gov. Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Washington DC and Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday provide full hookups, pools, playgrounds, laundry, and WiFi, and sit within easy reach of central D.C. Bay Shore Campground offers water and electric hookups with shared dump stations on site, but no sewer at individual sites. Alcohol is not permitted at Greenbelt Park, and campers should buy firewood at or near their destination.
