Campgrounds and RV parks near Mount Lena, MD

Hiking is the dominant activity. The Appalachian Trail crosses South Mountain within walking distance of Mount Lena, and Catoctin Mountain Park maintains about 25 miles of trails ranging from short loops to strenuous ridge climbs. Cunningham Falls, a 78-foot cascade, is reached from the Houck area of Cunningham Falls State Park. Water recreation centers on Greenbrier State Park, where the lake allows swimming, fishing, and boating with electric motors only, with a lifeguarded beach in season. Gambrill State Park offers scenic overlooks and mountain-bike trails connected to the Frederick Watershed system. Families traveling with kids often pair a state-park stay with a resort day at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Williamsport, which programs pool time, themed weekends, and character activities. Antietam National Battlefield and the C&O Canal towpath add low-effort day trips.

The Maryland state-park camping season generally runs from early April through late October. Greenbrier State Park's campground closes at the end of October, with picnic shelters available on a similar schedule. Gambrill State Park's Rock Run Campground follows the same peak-season window. Owens Creek Campground at Catoctin Mountain Park typically operates from late April through the end of October, following National Park Service seasonal staffing. Summer weekends are the busiest window. Greenbrier's day-use area routinely reaches capacity, and the park closes the gate once the parking lot fills, so campers should return early after off-site trips. Advance day-use reservations are required on weekends and holidays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day at Greenbrier. Spring brings wildflowers and cool nights; fall delivers hardwood color across South Mountain and Catoctin Mountain, with October highs typically in the 60s Fahrenheit. Winter camping is limited: nearby state-park loops close, and Owens Creek shuts down after October. Snow and ice on ridge roads can affect access.

Terrain is Appalachian ridge-and-valley: forested slopes, rocky outcrops, and creek bottoms. Sites at Greenbrier State Park include a parking spur, table, and fire ring, with flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, and a mix of electric and non-electric loops. Owens Creek is more primitive, with tent pads, picnic tables, and fire rings, plus a central bathhouse with flush toilets and potable water but no showers or hookups. The nearest dump station for Owens Creek users is at Cunningham Falls State Park. Black bears are present on both South Mountain and Catoctin Mountain, so food and trash must be secured. Outside firewood is prohibited at Owens Creek to prevent invasive-pest spread; firewood is available on site and campers may collect dead and downed wood. Cell service is spotty in the deeper hollows. The nearest full-service supply run is Hagerstown or Frederick, both within about 30 minutes.
