Campgrounds and RV parks near Paramount-Long Meadow, MD

Antietam National Battlefield is the area's signature day trip, with a self-guided auto tour, ranger programs, and miles of walking paths. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal towpath runs along the Potomac and is popular for cycling and easy hikes. The Appalachian Trail crosses South Mountain just east of town, with day-hike access points at Washington Monument State Park and through Greenbrier State Park. Greenbrier's man-made freshwater lake offers swimming, sunbathing, boating, and fishing, plus hiking trails through varied wildlife habitats. Families staying at Jellystone Park have access to water play features, a lazy river, mini golf, and a jumping pillow. Catoctin Mountain Park offers waterfall hikes, 25 miles of trails, and ranger talks. Downtown Hagerstown adds museums, a minor-league ballpark, and grocery resupply.

The local camping season is shaped by the public-land calendar. Greenbrier State Park campsites operate roughly from early April through late October, and Owens Creek Campground at Catoctin Mountain Park is typically open from mid-April into mid-November. Private resorts like Jellystone Park Williamsport and the Hagerstown KOA generally run a longer season, with the water park and many amenities tied to warm-weather months. Summer is peak. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day book out months ahead, and Greenbrier regularly reaches day-use capacity on summer weekends and holidays, with advance reservations now required for weekend entry. Late spring brings wildflowers and mild hiking weather. Early fall delivers the area's best foliage on South Mountain and Catoctin Mountain, with cooler nights and lighter crowds after Labor Day. Winter camping is limited to a few private parks; state and national park campgrounds in the area close. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are common, and creek levels can rise quickly after heavy rain.

Expect a clear split between resort-style and rustic experiences. Jellystone Park Williamsport leans family-resort, with comfort stations, on-site laundry, a dog park, and RV sites in back-in and pull-thru configurations. The Hagerstown KOA offers similar full-hookup convenience with a quieter footprint. State and national park sites are more basic. Greenbrier has approximately 30 designated RV spots with water and electric hookups, plus hot showers in the campground. Owens Creek is geared to tents and small rigs, with flush toilets, showers, and drinking water centrally located, but no hookups. Cell service is patchy in the mountains. Bears, deer, and raccoons are active, so food should be stored securely. Firewood rules are strict at the national park: outside firewood may not be brought into Catoctin Mountain Park.
