Camping near Point of Rocks, Maryland
Point of Rocks sits on the Potomac River in Frederick County, Maryland, roughly 14 miles south of Frederick and directly on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park towpath at mile marker 48.5. The town offers restaurants, groceries, parking, water, restrooms, a river crossing and a boat ramp, which makes it a practical staging point for RV travelers exploring the canal corridor and nearby Harpers Ferry.
Drive-in camping in the village itself is limited, so most RV travelers base at established campgrounds within a short drive. Brunswick Family Campground sits on the Potomac about seven miles west, Harpers Ferry Campground and Harpers Ferry / Civil War Battlefields KOA Holiday are within roughly ten miles across the river in West Virginia, and Evergreen Point Village serves travelers looking for a longer-stay park setting.
For those willing to drive up onto Catoctin Mountain, Gambrill State Park offers a forested state-park campground about six miles northwest of Frederick, useful for cooler summer nights and trail access.
Things to do around Point of Rocks
The C&O Canal towpath is the main draw. The flat, packed surface of the towpath suits family biking and walking, and the canal runs alongside the Potomac past a string of historic sites. Landmarks along this stretch of the canal include the Point of Rocks station area, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, the Monocacy Aqueduct, Noland's Ferry, Lockhouse 29 and the Catoctin Aqueduct.
The Potomac itself supports kayaking and canoeing, with outfitters based in Brunswick offering shuttles and rentals. Up on the ridge, Gambrill State Park adds mountain biking, hiking on more than 15 miles of trails including the Catoctin Trail, and CCC-era stone overlooks with views over the Middletown and Frederick valleys.

The camping season here is short and shoulder-heavy. Most campgrounds in the area operate seasonally from April through October, with limited winter availability, and state-park inventory is tied to the same window. Gambrill State Park's Rock Run Campground opens in early April and closes in late October, with reservations required throughout the season via parkreservations.maryland.gov or by phone.
Spring brings wildflowers along the towpath and cool river paddling, but the Potomac can run high after snowmelt and heavy rain, so paddlers should check current conditions before launching. Summer is peak booking season for the KOA and other private parks near Harpers Ferry, with weekends filling weeks ahead; humidity and afternoon thunderstorms are common.
Fall is arguably the best window. September skies are typically the clearest of the year, and October foliage on Catoctin Mountain is a reliable draw. Winter closures affect most drive-in options, though the towpath itself stays open for day use.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

This was our first time renting a camping trailer, and overall we had a great experience. Pickup and drop off were easy, and Wendy was responsive and accommodating, including with a last minute booking. Overall, everything went smoothly and we really appreciated the communication and flexibility throughout.

Wendy’s trailer was just as advertised and the perfect size for four people over a rainy Memorial Day weekend.

How to book campgrounds near Point of Rocks
Reservation systems vary by operator, so it helps to plan by park before locking in dates. Maryland state park sites, including Gambrill State Park, are booked through parkreservations.maryland.gov or by calling 1-888-432-CAMP, and popular weekends sell out well ahead. The state system asks for vehicle and camping unit tag numbers and the names of all occupants at booking, so gather rental paperwork before starting.
Private parks such as Brunswick Family Campground, Evergreen Point Village, Harpers Ferry Campground and the Harpers Ferry / Civil War Battlefields KOA Holiday accept reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines. For the KOA in particular, book summer holiday weekends months in advance and confirm rig-length limits when reserving a pull-through site.
What to expect on the ground
Sites vary widely in character. Gambrill's Rock Run Campground offers a mix of non-electric campsites, sites with 30-amp electric hookups and four mini cabins, with picnic tables, fire rings and lantern posts at every site plus a bathhouse with hot showers, flush toilets and a dump station with potable water. Equipment length limits range from 20 to 30 feet depending on the site, which rules out larger Class A rentals.
Along the river, freight and commuter trains run the CSX line paralleling the canal, and campsites near the tracks can be noisy overnight. Cell coverage is generally adequate in Point of Rocks and Brunswick but drops in pockets along the towpath and up on Catoctin Mountain. Pets are welcome at most parks on leash, and firewood is typically sold on site to prevent moving pests between regions.
