Campgrounds near Smithsburg
Smithsburg sits in Washington County on the eastern flank of South Mountain, placing RV travelers within a short drive of two overlapping park systems in the Catoctin range: Maryland state parks and Catoctin Mountain Park, a National Park Service unit. The area is family friendly, well signed, and reachable from the Baltimore-Washington and Frederick metros via I-70 and US-15.
The closest developed National Park Service campground is Owens Creek Campground, located about five miles from Thurmont, with 48 single sites, no hookups, a 22-foot trailer limit, and a 30-foot maximum RV length. Cunningham Falls State Park adds two separate camping areas: the Houck Area off Route 77, which holds the lake, falls and campgrounds, and the Manor Area off Route 15, which has a Scales and Tales Aviary, camping and the historic Catoctin Iron Furnace.
Further options include Greenbrier State Park on the west side of South Mountain and Gambrill State Park south of Thurmont. Gambrill State Park spans two distinct areas: High Knob at roughly 1,600 feet in elevation and Rock Run at the base of the mountain, with camping concentrated at Rock Run.
Things to do near Smithsburg
Hiking is the primary draw. Catoctin Mountain Park boasts 25 miles of trails, and the Catoctin Trail runs 27 miles from Gambrill State Park through Cunningham Falls State Park and on into Catoctin Mountain Park, with nine miles of trail in Cunningham Falls. The falls itself is the region's signature stop: Hunting Creek cascades 78 feet down a face of bare rock, and it is the tallest waterfall in Maryland and likely the most visited.
Water recreation centers on two lakes. Most day visitors make a beeline for the William Houck Area, home to the park's namesake 78-foot waterfall, and after hiking to the falls campers head down to William Houck Lake to swim, rent a paddleboat, or relax on the sandy beach. Greenbrier's man-made freshwater lake offers swimming, sunbathing, boating and fishing opportunities, and mountain biking is popular on the surrounding ridge trails.
Gambrill adds scenic overlooks and a stocked pond. The Rock Run pond is classified as a Free Fishing Pond and no fishing license is required, and loaner fishing poles for children are available May until October.

The regional camping season runs roughly April through October. Rock Run Campground at Gambrill is open from April to October, and at Greenbrier the beach is open from May through September, while camping season runs from early April through October. Cunningham Falls follows the same pattern, though primitive camping at the Manor Area Campground is available November 1 through March 31, and the bathhouse is closed for the winter but a portable toilet is available, with reservations required.
Owens Creek is strictly a warm-weather operation. Owens Creek Campground at Catoctin Mountain Park is typically open from late April until October 31, and campers should check Recreation.gov for the current operating dates.
Summer weekends fill fast. Summer brings the crowds to Greenbrier, which regularly reaches capacity on summer weekends and holidays; expect lines to enter the park, and to avoid the crowds, opt for a weekday visit outside of the summer months to see spring wildflowers or fall foliage. Fall foliage in the Catoctins is another peak booking period, and shoulder seasons offer cooler hiking with fewer crowds.

The experience with Scott and his RV was the best experience we’ve had renting so far. Scott was extremely accommodating in our pick up and drop off time which was very appreciated. The RV itself was in great condition and everything was extremely smooth and worked great. Our group had no issues with any functions or amenities within the RV the entire trip, and the RV was very nice. I’d highly recommend Scott to anyone in the future!

We had a fantastic experience with Obi’s RV. It is a great RV, in excellent condition and really easy to drive and stay in. It is comfortable and spacious and Obi’s communication was excellent. Both he and his wife are lovely people and were incredibly helpful and thoughtful throughout the whole experience from booking through to return. I would highly recommend.

How to book campsites near Smithsburg
The two park systems use separate reservation platforms. For Catoctin Mountain Park, reservations are required at Owens Creek, walk-ups are no longer accepted, and reservations can be made up to six months in advance at Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777. Maryland state parks, including Cunningham Falls, Greenbrier, and Gambrill, use the state's ReserveAmerica portal: reservations are recommended for both areas, since they often fill weeks or months in advance, and can be booked at parkreservations.maryland.gov or by calling 888-432-CAMP.
Booking windows differ. Maryland state park reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 365 days in advance, while Catoctin's Owens Creek uses a rolling six-month window. At Greenbrier reservations are required, the park entrance gate closes at sunset, and if campers anticipate arriving after sunset they should call the park directly for instructions.
What to expect
Sites in this area are wooded and hilly, which affects RV setup. The terrain at Owens Creek is hilly, level campsites are few and far between, and for tent campers each site has a level pad on which to pitch a tent. Cunningham Falls Houck has more RV-friendly options, with a mix of basic sites and electric sites plus a dump station serving both camping areas.
Black bears are active in the Catoctins. Black bears are present at Cunningham Falls State Park, so keep food and garbage secure in camping and day-use areas, and the same applies at Gambrill and Greenbrier. Do not move firewood; buy it locally or use downed wood where permitted.
Cell service is inconsistent. Cell phone service is patchy throughout the park, and many carriers do not have service in the Catoctin Mountains. Download maps before arrival.
