Things to do near Spring Ridge

The headline attraction is Cunningham Falls itself. Hunting Creek cascades 78 feet down a face of bare rock, making it the tallest waterfall in Maryland. A short Lower Trail from the lake parking lot is the family route, and the steeper Cliff Trail is the alternative. Hunting Creek Lake adds swimming, boating with paddle boat rentals, and fishing. Hikers have plenty of mileage nearby. Catoctin Mountain Park has 25 miles of trails, including routes to Wolf Rock and Chimney Rock from Owens Creek. The Manor Area follows a similar schedule for developed camping. Primitive camping at the Manor Area is available November 1 through March 31, the bathhouse is closed for the winter with only a portable toilet available, the area can close due to severe weather, and reservations are required. Owens Creek Campground in Catoctin Mountain Park is also seasonal, typically open from late April until October 31. Gambrill State Park's Rock Run Campground opens the first weekend in April and closes the last weekend in October. During the winter months the campground shuts down, though the park itself stays open; call the park office to confirm access when snow is possible. Summer weekends and holidays are the peak. Campsites book up fast for peak season, June through September, and holiday weekends, so book more than six months in advance for these times, and even earlier for cabins and electric hookup sites.

How to book a campsite

Maryland state parks and Catoctin Mountain Park use two different reservation systems. For Gambrill State Park, Manor - Cunningham Falls State Park, and Houck - Cunningham Falls State Park, reservations go through the Maryland Park Service. Call 888-432-CAMP between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or visit parkreservations.maryland.gov to reserve online any time. Campsite reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance. Owens Creek Campground - Catoctin Mountain Park is federal, so it uses Recreation.gov. Reservations are required, walk-ups are no longer accepted, and reservations can be made up to six months in advance at Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777. Evergreen Point Village is a private campground and books through its own channels. Cabins and electric sites fill first, so lock those in early.

What to expect

These are mountain-forest campgrounds, not resort parks. Expect gravel pads, picnic tables and fire rings at every site, shared bathhouses with hot showers, and dump stations at the larger state park campgrounds including Gambrill's Rock Run area. Full hookups are not standard: electric-only sites appear on select loops at Houck, Manor, and Gambrill, and Owens Creek has no hookups at all. RV length is a real constraint. At Owens Creek, maximum trailer length is 22 feet and maximum RV length is 30 feet, with only three pull-through sites. Houck can handle larger rigs, with some sites fitting up to about 40 feet. Sites are shaded and hilly, so pack leveling blocks. Cell service is patchy across the Catoctins, many carriers do not have service in the mountains, and black bears are present, so keep food and garbage secure in camping and day-use areas.
