Campgrounds near Cheshire, Massachusetts
Cheshire sits in the northern Berkshires along the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, roughly midway between Pittsfield and North Adams. The town is bordered by Mount Greylock State Reservation to the west and the Hoosac Range to the east, so most RV-friendly campgrounds within a short drive are tucked into wooded hills rather than open valley floors.
Private options closest to town include Mt. Greylock Campsite Park in Lanesborough, Bonnie Brae Cabins & Campsites, Privacy Campground, and Fernwood Forest Campground. These parks lean toward family camping with water and electric hookups, bathhouses, and pond or pool access rather than resort-style amenities.
For a state-park experience, Savoy Mountain State Forest lies just east of Cheshire and is operated by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. The area works well as a base for hiking Mount Greylock, visiting Tanglewood and MASS MoCA, or riding the rail trail directly from the campground doorstep.
Things to do near Cheshire
The Ashuwillticook Rail Trail runs directly through Cheshire, offering a paved, mostly flat route for biking, walking, and running along the Hoosic River and Cheshire Reservoir. Mount Greylock State Reservation rises just west of town, with an auto road to the 3,491-foot summit and a large network of hiking trails including a section of the Appalachian Trail.
Savoy Mountain State Forest adds swimming at North Pond, trout fishing, and waterfall hikes to Tannery Falls, one of the state's highest waterfalls. Families staying at Mt. Greylock Campsite Park can use the on-site pool, fishing pond, playground, and activity center between excursions.
Cultural stops within a 30-minute drive include MASS MoCA in North Adams, the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, and Tanglewood in Lenox during summer.

The Massachusetts DCR camping season at Savoy Mountain State Forest generally runs from mid-May through mid-October, and the primitive Sperry Road hike-in area on Mount Greylock traditionally opens mid-May through Columbus Day weekend, though Sperry Road has been closed for renovations in recent seasons, so campers should confirm current status on the DCR website. Winter camping is not permitted at Sperry Road, and the state forest campground closes for the cold months as well.
Private campgrounds in the area typically open in late April or early May and close in mid to late October, tracking the frost calendar and the Berkshires tourism season. July and August are peak, driven by Tanglewood concerts, hiking weather, and family vacations, so weekend sites often book out well in advance.
Late September and early October bring peak foliage across the Berkshires, which is the second-busiest window of the year. Winter closes most drive-in RV camping in the region, though the surrounding state forests remain open for day use, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.
How to book
State-run campgrounds, including Savoy Mountain State Forest and the Sperry Road hike-in area at Mount Greylock, are reserved through the Massachusetts DCR system on ReserveAmerica. The booking window opens up to four months ahead of arrival, and popular weekends around July 4th, Labor Day, and peak foliage tend to fill on the day they release at 8 a.m. Eastern.
Private parks such as Mt. Greylock Campsite Park, Bonnie Brae Cabins & Campsites, Privacy Campground, and Fernwood Forest Campground handle reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and holiday stays should be locked in weeks or months in advance, especially for larger RV sites with hookups.
What to expect
Sites near Cheshire are wooded and hilly rather than open and paved. Private parks such as Mt. Greylock Campsite Park offer water and electric hookups with bathhouses, but full sewer hookups are limited across the region. Savoy Mountain State Forest has no site hookups, though a dump station is available for RVs and trailers. Cell coverage can be spotty in the deeper valleys and inside Mount Greylock and Savoy Mountain state forests.
Expect cool nights even in mid-summer given the elevation, black bear activity that requires proper food storage in provided lockers, and mosquitoes near ponds and wetlands. Roads to state-forest campgrounds are narrow and winding, and vehicles longer than 22 feet are prohibited on the Mount Greylock Scenic Byway, so drivers with larger RVs should plan routes carefully.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Cheshire RV trip?
Yes, the Berkshires are made for dogs and you will find plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Cheshire options on RVezy. Use the Pet-Friendly filter to narrow your search to hosts who welcome four-legged passengers (some have small cleaning fees, listed up front). Cheshire is especially dog-friendly: leashed pets are welcome on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail through Cheshire, Lanesborough, and Adams, and Mount Greylock State Reservation allows leashed dogs on most trails. Many local campgrounds, including Bonnie Brae Cabins and Campsites in nearby Pittsfield, welcome pets. Pack a collapsible water bowl for hot July hikes up to the Cheshire Cobbles, where the Appalachian Trail crosses right through town.
mass.gov/locations/mount-greylock-state-reservationCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Cheshire?
Yes, RV delivery Cheshire is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're new to towing. Many RVezy hosts in the Cheshire and greater Berkshire County area will drive the RV directly to your campsite at Mt. Greylock Campsite Park, Bonnie Brae, Historic Valley Campground in North Adams, or even a private property, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service and their delivery radius. Delivery fees usually depend on distance, and many hosts include free delivery within 20 to 30 miles. Pro tip: a delivered RV is the smartest move for first-time renters heading to twisty mountain campgrounds.
mass.gov/locations/mount-greylock-state-reservationHow does mileage work and how far can I drive from Cheshire?
Mileage on your Cheshire RV trip is set by each host, and the daily allowance and per-mile cost are shown clearly on every listing before you book. Many hosts offer generous packages, and some feature RV rental with unlimited mileage for road trip lovers. From Cheshire you can reach great destinations without burning through miles: Mount Greylock summit is about 10 miles away, MASS MoCA in North Adams is roughly 13 miles, Tanglewood in Lenox is about 20 miles, Bennington, Vermont sits 25 miles north, and Albany, NY is roughly 45 miles west. If you are planning a bigger loop through the White Mountains or Maine coast, message hosts directly to discuss a custom mileage package that fits your route.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cheshire%2C%20MassachusettsWhere are the best campgrounds near Cheshire, MA?
You are spoiled for choice for RV camping Cheshire because the town sits in the heart of the Northern Berkshires. Top picks include Mt. Greylock Campsite Park in Lanesborough (about 5 miles south, full hookups and wooded sites), Bonnie Brae Cabins and Campsites in Pittsfield (about 12 miles south, family-friendly with a pool), Historic Valley Campground on Windsor Lake in North Adams (about 12 miles north, lakefront sites), Savoy Mountain State Forest Campground (about 15 miles east, rustic and scenic), and Clarksburg State Park (about 18 miles north near the Vermont border). Mt. Greylock Campsite Park is an easy choice for quick access to both the Appalachian Trail and the rail trail.
mass.gov/locations/savoy-mountain-state-forestWhen is the best time of year to plan a Cheshire RV trip?
Cheshire shines from late May through mid-October, with peak color typically arriving late September into the second week of October when Berkshire fall foliage spreads across Mount Greylock. Summer high temperatures average a comfortable upper 70s to low 80s F, ideal for swimming in Cheshire Reservoir or biking the rail trail. June through August brings Tanglewood concerts in nearby Lenox, a must for music lovers. Spring is quieter and greener, while winter brings snow and below-freezing temperatures, so most campgrounds close by late October. Book your foliage week RV at least 4 to 6 months ahead because leaf peepers fill up Berkshires rentals fast.
weather.gov/aly/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in the Berkshires?
You will be just fine, and most first-time renters in Cheshire are surprised how quickly they get comfortable. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, tanks, and propane before you hit the road. For first time renting an RV, smaller Class C motorhomes or travel trailers in the 20 to 25 foot range are a great fit for Berkshires roads. Stick to main routes like Route 8, Route 7, and Route 2 (the Mohawk Trail), all of which handle RVs well. Avoid the steep Mount Greylock auto road with larger rigs (trailers are not permitted), but you can absolutely drive scenic Route 2 with appropriate caution at the hairpin turn outside North Adams.
mass.gov/locations/mount-greylock-state-reservationWhat happens if I break down during my Cheshire RV trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you get a flat tire on Route 8, run out of propane near Savoy Mountain, or have a battery issue at your campsite, help is one call away any time. Your host is also typically a quick message away for questions about the rig's quirks, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Cell service is generally reliable along main Berkshire corridors like Route 7, Route 8, and Route 2, though it can be spotty deep in Savoy Mountain State Forest. Snap a photo of your host's orientation walkthrough so you have a quick reference for the basics.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Cheshire RV rental into Vermont, New York, or Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Cheshire into neighboring states is popular because you are close to multiple borders. Vermont is just 25 miles north (Bennington is an easy day trip), New York's Adirondacks are roughly 90 miles west, and the New Hampshire White Mountains are about 3 hours northeast. Cross-border travel within the US is allowed on RVezy rentals, and most hosts welcome it as long as you discuss your route in advance. Travel into Canada may also be possible depending on the host's insurance and approval, so message them through the listing before booking. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals. A 7-day loop through Cheshire, the Green Mountains, and the White Mountains is a bucket-list New England RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of gas mileage should I expect, and what does fuel cost around Cheshire?
Budget realistically and you will have no surprises. Class B campervans typically deliver about 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes around 10 to 14 mpg, and Class A coaches roughly 7 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, but expect a 20 to 30 percent hit to its normal mileage. Gas prices in Berkshire County tend to run slightly above the Massachusetts state average, with stations in Pittsfield and Adams usually offering the most competitive rates near Cheshire. Fill up in Pittsfield on Route 7 before heading deeper into the mountains, and look for a convenient last top-off on Route 8 in Cheshire before climbing toward Mount Greylock or the Mohawk Trail.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds in the Cheshire area?
For the best sites, book early. Massachusetts state park campgrounds like Savoy Mountain and Clarksburg State Park use ReserveAmerica through Mass.gov and open reservations up to 6 months in advance. For summer weekends and the entire month of October (peak foliage), aim to book 3 to 6 months out, especially for sites with electric hookups. Private campgrounds like Mt. Greylock Campsite Park and Bonnie Brae fill quickly for Tanglewood weekends and holiday weekends. Midweek and shoulder season trips (May, early June, September weekdays) are far easier to book last minute. If your top choice is full, check for cancellations 7 to 10 days before your trip, since people often release sites once final plans firm up.
mass.gov/camping-at-massachusetts-state-parksWhat are the driving conditions like in and around Cheshire?
Driving conditions around Cheshire are very RV-friendly on main routes. Route 8 runs right through Cheshire and is a smooth, mostly flat valley road that suits any size rig. Route 7 between Pittsfield and Williamstown is also easy driving. Be more thoughtful on the Mohawk Trail (Route 2) hairpin turn east of North Adams, which is steep and tight (manageable but take it slow), and note that the Mount Greylock auto road bans trailers and limits vehicle length. Winter driving from December through March can bring snow and ice, so most RV trips happen May through October. Download offline maps before heading into Savoy Mountain or Florida, MA, where cell coverage drops behind the ridges.
mass.gov/info-details/safe-driving-in-massachusettsWhat hookups and amenities do Cheshire-area campgrounds offer?
You will find a great mix. Private campgrounds near Cheshire like Mt. Greylock Campsite Park and Bonnie Brae offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, and sewer) along with showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and dump stations. Massachusetts state campgrounds like Savoy Mountain and Clarksburg State Park lean more rustic, with restrooms and potable water fill stations but typically no in-site electric or sewer hookups. For dumping tanks, a stop at a nearby private campground dump station is convenient if you are staying at a state park. Most campgrounds sell firewood on site (do not bring your own due to Massachusetts firewood transport rules that help prevent invasive pests). Top off fresh water in Cheshire before heading to Savoy.
mass.gov/service-details/firewood-and-invasive-pestsWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Cheshire?
You will feel right at home. A typical motorhome rental Cheshire comes fully equipped with a queen or king bed, additional sleeping for 4 to 8 people depending on size, a kitchen with fridge, stovetop, microwave, and sink, plus a bathroom with shower and toilet. Most rigs include air conditioning, a furnace for chilly Berkshire nights (helpful in May and September when temps can dip into the 40s F), and many include a TV, Wi-Fi boosters, or onboard generators for off-grid stays. Campervan rental Cheshire options are more compact but still include sleeping, a small galley, and basic plumbing. Seatbelts available for travel are listed on every RVezy listing. Filter by Sleeps to find the perfect fit for a family RV trip Cheshire.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cheshire%2C%20MassachusettsWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Cheshire?
Hosts in Cheshire and across the Berkshires offer a range of helpful add-ons to customize your trip. Popular extras include kitchen kits (pots, plates, utensils), bedding and linen packages, camping chairs, outdoor grills, bike racks (handy for the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail), portable generators, and even kayaks for Cheshire Reservoir. Pickup logistics are flexible: meet your host at their location, or many will deliver right to your campground. Mileage policies and any one-way options vary by listing, so use the Instant Book filter to find the fastest-confirming rigs, or message a host directly to ask about a one-way RV road trip from Cheshire toward Boston, Burlington, or the Cape. Bundling delivery with a kitchen kit often saves you a packing headache.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cheshire%2C%20MassachusettsHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your Cheshire RV rental on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit card and your funds are protected by RVezy until your trip starts. A security deposit is pre-authorized (held, not charged) on your card before pickup, with the amount set by the host and shown on the listing. As long as you return the rig in the same condition, with tanks and fuel as agreed, the hold is released after your trip. To avoid issues, take time-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's instructions on dumping tanks, and refuel before returning. Ask your host about the nearest gas station in Cheshire or Adams for a stress-free return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a unique local experience I can only have on a Cheshire RV trip?
Cheshire is officially designated an Appalachian Trail Community, and the AT crosses right through town just steps from the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail. That means you can park your RV at Mt. Greylock Campsite Park, walk into Cheshire for coffee at a local cafe, hop on the AT to hike up to the Cheshire Cobbles for sweeping views of Mount Greylock and the Hoosic River Valley, then bike the flat 14-mile rail trail to Adams for lunch, all in one day. Pack layers, plenty of water, and a camera, because the combination of small-town New England charm and big mountain scenery is hard to match anywhere else in the Berkshires.
