Campgrounds near Huntington, Massachusetts
Huntington sits in the hilltowns of western Massachusetts, along the East Branch of the Westfield River in the foothills of the Berkshires. The East Branch is designated a National Wild and Scenic River, and Chesterfield Gorge just to the north forms the entrance to an extensive natural recreation area along the river. The area mixes private RV parks with public land managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).
Walker Island Family Camping is the closest full-service RV park, located up Route 20 in Chester on 85 acres formed by Walker Brook. Additional options within roughly half an hour include Northampton / Springfield KOA Holiday in Westhampton, Laurel Ridge Camping Area and Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park in Granville, and Sodom Mountain Campground in Southwick.
The surrounding hills also hold several DCR state forests, including Granville State Forest, Tolland State Forest, and D.A.R. State Forest, creating a mix of private and public camping within a short drive of Huntington.
Things to do near Huntington
The Westfield River corridor is the main draw. Fly fishing for trout is a popular pastime, and the river is stocked with trout in both spring and fall. Chesterfield Gorge, managed by The Trustees of Reservations, sits a short drive north and offers a cliff-top trail with views into the gorge carved by the East Branch of the Westfield River.
Hiking, paddling and cycling all cluster around the river. The East Branch Trail runs roughly 6.6 miles from the Chesterfield Gorge trailhead through Gilbert A. Bliss State Forest to Knightville Dam in Huntington, following the river the whole way.
Families staying at Walker Island Family Camping are within about ten minutes of the Chester town center, the Chester Railway Station museum, and the Keystone Arch Bridges Trail. Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival and the Norman Rockwell Museum are day-trip options further west in the Berkshires.

The camping window in this part of Massachusetts is short. Most campgrounds operate from May through mid-October. DCR state forest campgrounds typically open in April and close by the end of October, while private campgrounds may have longer seasons, with some opening as early as April. Walker Island Family Camping generally opens in early May and closes after Columbus Day weekend in October.
Spring is cool and wet, with the East Branch of the Westfield River running high from snowmelt. Trout stocking makes April and May prime for anglers. Summer brings warm days, reliable swimming weather and peak reservation pressure, especially on holiday weekends. Bug pressure along the river can be significant, so plan on repellent.
Early fall is the best mix of weather and scenery: cool nights, dry days and hardwood foliage that peaks in the hilltowns from late September into mid-October. After mid-October, most public and private campgrounds shut down until spring.

How to book a campsite near Huntington
Private campgrounds around Huntington, including Walker Island Family Camping, Northampton / Springfield KOA Holiday, Laurel Ridge Camping Area, Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park, and Sodom Mountain Campground, are booked directly with each park by phone or through the operator website. Summer weekends and foliage weekends fill early, so reserve full-hookup RV sites several months out.
State forest campgrounds are handled through the DCR reservation system on ReserveAmerica. The DCR camping season runs from April through October, reservations can be made up to four months in advance of the arrival date, and same-day reservations are available until 2 p.m. through ReserveAmerica. There is a 2-day minimum stay at most campsites, and campers can stay for a total of 14 days at each campground between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
The Corps of Engineers group site at Indian Hollow, near Knightville Dam, is booked through Recreation.gov and is intended for organized groups rather than individual RVers.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into Huntington follow river valleys, with Route 20 and Route 112 as the main approaches. Sites near the Westfield River are wooded and shady, and many private campgrounds sit directly on brooks or the river itself. Walker Island Family Camping offers about 90 sites for tents, trailers, and RVs, with full hookups and Wi-Fi available.
RV size is a real consideration in the hilltowns. Access roads can be narrow and winding, and older campgrounds were laid out for smaller rigs. Larger Class A motorhomes and long fifth-wheels should confirm site length and turning access before booking.
DCR rules apply at state forests: Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of any DCR campground, so buy firewood on site or locally. Expect fair cell coverage in Huntington village and spotty coverage in the surrounding hills and river gorges.

Expect roughly $90 to $175 per night for travel trailers, $150 to $250 for Class C motorhomes, and $200 to $400 for larger Class A rigs. Many Hilltown hosts also offer multi-night discounts, so a 5-night Berkshires loop can cost less per night than a weekend trip.

Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Huntington is easy to find. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) in their rigs. Many Hilltown hosts are dog lovers themselves and often leave bowls or beds onboard. Once you arrive, you'll find dog-friendly trails throughout the area, including the Knightville Dam Wildlife Management Area and the woods around Chesterfield Gorge. Massachusetts DCR campgrounds allow pets at designated sites with proof of current rabies vaccination, so bring your records. Tip: pack a towel, the Westfield River makes for muddy paws.

Many local hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer to your campsite at places like DAR State Forest, Granville State Forest, or Tolland State Forest, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter when searching, and message the host to confirm the address and any delivery fee (often based on mileage from their location). It turns an RV trip in Huntington into a true turnkey vacation.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntington%2C%20MassachusettsWhat are the best campgrounds near Huntington, MA for RV camping?
The best campgrounds near Huntington put you right in the woods and rivers of the Hilltowns. Top picks for RV camping in Huntington include DAR State Forest in Goshen (RV sites with electric and water hookups, about 15 miles north), Granville State Forest on the Hubbard River (about 20 miles south), Tolland State Forest on Otis Reservoir (lakeside sites, about 25 miles west), Prospect Mountain Campground in Granville (full hookups and a pool), and the Springfield/Chicopee KOA area (full-service, family-friendly). DCR state forest sites book through ReserveAmerica up to six months out. Pro tip: lakeside sites at Tolland go fast, so set a calendar reminder for the booking window.
mass.gov/locations/dar-state-forestWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Huntington, MA?
Late September through mid-October is the magic window for an RV trip from Huntington, with peak foliage typically arriving in the first two weeks of October when the Westfield River valley turns red and gold. Summer (June through August) brings warm days in the 75 to 85 degree range, perfect for swimming at Littleville Lake and CM Gardner State Park. May and early June are quieter and cheaper, with blooming mountain laurel. Winter RVing is possible with a four-season rig (temps can drop into the teens and snow is common from December through March). Pro tip: book foliage weekends 3 to 4 months ahead, leaf-peepers grab Hilltown campsites fast.
weather.gov/box/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Huntington?
You'll be fine, Huntington is one of the easier places in Massachusetts to learn. The roads are rural and rarely congested, with Route 20 (Jacob's Ladder Trail) and Route 112 offering scenic, low-traffic driving once you leave the village center. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, tanks, and driving tips, so you're never sent off guessing. If you want to skip driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip for first time renting an RV: stick to numbered state routes for your first day behind the wheel and watch for posted low-clearance signs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong with my RV in Huntington?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so help is just a phone call away whether you have a flat tire on Route 112 or a dead battery near Knightville Dam. The service handles towing, jump-starts, lockouts, tire changes, and fuel delivery. For mechanical questions, your host is your first call, they know their rig best. For anything bigger, RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: cell service can be spotty in the Hilltowns west of Huntington, so screenshot the roadside number and your reservation details before you leave the I-91 corridor.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Huntington RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most Huntington RV rentals, and the location is ideal for a multi-state New England loop. Popular routes from Huntington include Vermont's Green Mountains (about 90 miles north), New Hampshire's White Mountains (about 3 hours), the Maine coast (about 4 hours), and the Adirondacks in New York (about 2.5 hours). Travel to Canada may be allowed but requires advance approval from your host because of insurance considerations, so message the host through the listing before booking if you're planning a Quebec or Maritimes trip. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: the drive up Route 7 through the Berkshires into Vermont is one of New England's best RV routes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on my Huntington RV trip?
Budget smart and you'll be fine. Massachusetts gas prices typically run slightly above the national average. Class B campervans get roughly 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 MPG, and big Class A rigs sit around 7 to 10 MPG. A typical 200-mile Huntington-to-Berkshires-and-back loop in a Class C costs roughly $55 to $80 in fuel at current prices. The closest fuel stations are in Huntington village along Route 20 and in nearby Westfield, fill up before heading west since the Hilltowns get sparse fast. Pro tip: diesel rigs often save money on longer trips even with higher per-gallon prices.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Huntington?
For peak season (July, August, and October foliage weekends), book DCR campgrounds the moment the reservation window opens through ReserveAmerica, which uses a rolling six-month booking window for Massachusetts state forests. Private parks like Prospect Mountain Campground book directly through their own sites and tend to fill 6 to 8 weeks ahead in summer. Shoulder season (May, early June, September weekdays) is much more relaxed and you can often grab a same-day reservation. Pro tip: set a phone alarm for the day your target date opens to snag waterfront sites at Tolland State Forest.
mass.gov/info-details/dcr-camping-season-informationWhat are the local driving conditions like around Huntington?
Driving around Huntington is mostly easy, with scenic two-lane roads through forested hills. Route 20 (the Jacob's Ladder Scenic Byway) is the main east-west artery and Route 112 runs north-south along the Westfield River. Watch for steep grades climbing toward Becket and Chester, occasional deer at dawn and dusk, frost heaves in early spring, and snow or ice from December through March. The village center has a low railroad bridge, so taller motorhomes should stay on Route 20. Pro tip: avoid GPS shortcuts onto dirt roads, many are seasonal and not RV-friendly. Stick to numbered state highways for a smooth Huntington RV trip.
mass.gov/orgs/highway-divisionWhat hookups and dump stations should I expect at campgrounds near Huntington?
Campgrounds near Huntington offer a solid mix of services. DCR state forest campgrounds like DAR, Tolland, and Granville have RV sites with electric and water hookups, flush toilets, hot showers, and on-site dump stations, but no sewer hookups at individual sites. Private parks like Prospect Mountain Campground offer full hookups (electric, water, sewer) plus laundry and Wi-Fi. Most sites accommodate rigs up to 35 feet; a few fit 40+. Roadside camping is not allowed in town, so always have a reservation when deciding where to park an RV in Huntington overnight. Pro tip: top off fresh water in Huntington village before heading into the Hilltowns.
mass.gov/locations/tolland-state-forestWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Huntington, MA?
You'll be impressed by how loaded these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Huntington includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa (sleeping 4 to 8 total), full kitchen with fridge and freezer, three-burner stove, microwave, sink, a wet or dry bath with toilet and shower, roof-mounted air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Most have a TV and many offer Wi-Fi hotspots or generators (great for off-grid spots near Chesterfield Gorge). Campervan rental Huntington options are more compact but still include sleeping, cooking, and basic plumbing. Each listing shows exactly what's included, sleeps count, and bed configuration, so you can match the RV to your crew before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntington%2C%20MassachusettsWhat add-ons and pickup options can I choose for my Huntington RV rental?
Hosts offer a great menu of add-ons to make your family RV trip Huntington-ready. Common extras include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor tables, bike racks, generators, propane refills, kayaks and paddleboards (great for Littleville Lake), and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Huntington or a nearby Hilltown like Russell, Westhampton, or Chester, and delivery to your campground is widely available. Mileage policies range from 100 free miles per night to unlimited, listed clearly on each rental. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and linens for a true turnkey first-timer experience, you literally just show up at the campsite.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntington%2C%20MassachusettsHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Huntington?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is placed as a hold on your card a few days before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment. To avoid issues, take time-stamped photos of the RV's interior and exterior at pickup and return, follow the host's mileage and generator-hour limits, and return it with tanks emptied and fuel topped off. Pro tip: ask your host during the walkthrough exactly how they prefer the rig returned, clarity now means a faster deposit refund later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Huntington, MA?
You're perfectly positioned for a classic New England RV road trip from Huntington. Top routes: the Berkshires loop through Lenox, Stockbridge, and Mount Greylock (45 to 60 miles west, about 1.5 hours); the Mohawk Trail via Route 2 to North Adams and Williamstown (about 60 miles, 1.5 hours); Cape Cod via the Mass Pike (about 150 miles, 3 hours); the Green Mountains of southern Vermont including Manchester and Brattleboro (about 90 miles, 2 hours); and the White Mountains in New Hampshire (about 180 miles, 3.5 hours). Don't miss closer gems like Chesterfield Gorge and Glendale Falls, both under 20 minutes from town. Pro tip: do the Berkshires midweek to skip Tanglewood-weekend traffic on Route 20.
