Campgrounds near North Adams
North Adams sits in the northwest corner of Massachusetts, wedged between Mount Greylock, the highest peak in the state, and the Vermont border. The Berkshire Hills and the southern reach of the Green Mountains meet here, and campgrounds within a short drive give RV travelers access to both ranges plus the Mohawk Trail scenic corridor along Route 2.
The closest options are state-run. Clarksburg State Park sits just north of the city near Mauserts Pond, and Savoy Mountain State Forest occupies the Hoosac Range to the southeast. Mohawk Trail State Forest lies further east along the Cold and Deerfield rivers. Two nearby private grounds, Pine Hollow Campground in Pownal, Vermont, and Greenwood Lodge and Campsites in Bennington, extend the options for RV travelers who need hookups.
Massachusetts DCR sites in this area are tent- and small-RV friendly but generally lack hookups and dump stations. Travelers hauling larger rigs should confirm site length and utility availability before booking, as the two Vermont-side private grounds tend to offer the fuller RV service list.
Things to do near North Adams
MASS MoCA anchors the city and hosts rotating contemporary art exhibits plus a summer performance calendar, including the FreshGrass festival. Kidspace inside the museum runs family-focused programming, and downtown North Adams is walkable from the museum campus.
Outdoor options are extensive. Mount Greylock State Reservation offers hiking, the seasonal auto road, and Bascom Lodge at the summit. The Appalachian Trail passes directly through North Adams. Natural Bridge State Park showcases a white marble arch. Trails from Savoy Mountain State Forest reach Tannery Falls and Spruce Hill, and the Deerfield River near Mohawk Trail State Forest is used for trout fishing, rafting, and tubing. Windsor Lake within the city is set up for swimming, kayaking, and picnics.

The Massachusetts DCR camping season runs April through October, with Clarksburg State Park, Savoy Mountain State Forest, and Mohawk Trail State Forest all operating on this window. Log cabins at Mohawk Trail State Forest are available year-round, and Savoy Mountain State Forest also offers cabin rentals. The Mount Greylock summit road opens seasonally, generally late spring through late fall.
July and August bring the warmest, most reliable weather and the fullest event calendar at MASS MoCA. They are also the busiest booking window, and weekends should be reserved well ahead. Late September and early October deliver Berkshire fall foliage, cooler nights, and lower bug pressure, and this stretch is a favorite among many travelers.
Winter closes tent and standard RV camping at the state grounds. Snow, cold, and short days dominate December through March, though cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and cabin rentals at Mohawk Trail State Forest and Savoy Mountain State Forest remain options for cold-weather visitors.
How to book campgrounds near North Adams
Massachusetts DCR sites, including Clarksburg State Park, Savoy Mountain State Forest, and Mohawk Trail State Forest, are booked through ReserveAmerica at massdcrcamping.reserveamerica.com or by phone at 877-422-6762. Reservations can be made up to four months ahead of the arrival date, and walk-in registrations are not permitted. Same-day online reservations are accepted until 2 p.m. on the arrival date.
Photo ID matching the reservation name is required at check-in, and the primary occupant must be at least 18. Massachusetts prohibits transporting outside firewood into DCR campgrounds; firewood is available for purchase on site. Pine Hollow Campground and Greenwood Lodge and Campsites book directly through their own offices.
What to expect at campgrounds near North Adams
Most state sites in this area are wooded, with picnic tables, fire rings, and bear-proof food storage lockers at each site. Black bears are active throughout the Berkshires, so food and scented items should stay in the locker. Clarksburg State Park has flush toilets and hot showers but no hookups and no dump station. Savoy Mountain State Forest has flush toilets and showers along with cabin rentals.
Mohawk Trail State Forest offers wooded drive-in sites, walk-in car-free sites along the Cold River, and CCC-era log cabins with wood stoves for heat. Cell service is patchy in the deeper forest sections, and alcohol is prohibited in all Massachusetts state parks. RV travelers with larger rigs or full-hookup needs generally lean toward the private Vermont-side grounds.

July brings the warmest, sunniest days plus festivals at Mass MoCA. weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Berkshires?
You're going to do great, and you won't be doing it alone. Every RVezy host in North Adams gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering everything from leveling jacks to the propane stove. For first time renting an RV in mountain terrain, choose a Class B campervan or smaller Class C to start, both of which handle Route 2's twists and the famous Hairpin Turn easily. Most local roads are well-paved two-lanes with truck-friendly grades. Pro tip: drive your route in daylight your first day, fuel up in North Adams or Williamstown before heading up Mount Greylock's Rockwell Road, and you'll be cruising like a pro by day two.

RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip too. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup, save the roadside number to your phone, and screenshot the host's contact info in case Berkshire cell service gets spotty.

cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a North Adams RV trip?
Fuel is the second biggest line item after the rental itself, so plan smart. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes typically deliver 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. Massachusetts gas prices generally run a few cents above the national average, with stations on Route 2 in North Adams and Williamstown convenient for fill-ups. For a 4-day, 300-mile Berkshires loop in a Class C, budget roughly $120 to $150 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in North Adams before heading up Mount Greylock or out the Mohawk Trail, the next reliable RV-friendly stations are 20-plus miles down the road.

Book early and book smart. Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) opens state park reservations up to four months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and the 2026 season runs April through November. North Adams sits at the foot of Mount Greylock at the meeting of Route 2 (the Mohawk Trail) and Route 8, with mostly two-lane mountain roads in good condition. The famous Hairpin Turn on Route 2 just east of town is a tight switchback with a pull-off for photos, easy to take slow in any motorhome rental North Adams travelers choose. Avoid driving Rockwell Road up Mount Greylock in larger Class A rigs, and skip mountain back roads during winter storms, which can drop 83 inches of snow annually. Pro tip: download offline maps before you go since cell coverage dips in the hollows along the Deerfield River.

To avoid issues, do a thorough walkthrough at pickup, photograph any existing dings, and return with the same fuel and tank levels noted in your agreement. Pro tip: keep all receipts from the dump station and gas pumps to speed up the deposit return.

Yes, winter RV adventures from North Adams are a real and rewarding option, especially with Jiminy Peak (25 minutes south) and Berkshire East (30 minutes east) right in the neighborhood. Some hosts on RVezy offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable furnaces, and many ski-area parking lots and private campgrounds allow winter stays with shore power hookups. January averages 15°F to 27°F with 83 inches of annual snow, so confirm with your host that the RV is winter-rated and ask about hookup requirements. Pro tip: filter by hosts who mention winter camping in their listing and request delivery directly to a winterized RV park near the slopes.
