Campgrounds near Afton, Minnesota
Afton sits on the west bank of the St. Croix River in Washington County, about 20 miles east of downtown St. Paul and less than a mile from the Wisconsin border. The town is best known as the gateway community for Afton State Park, a rolling landscape of prairies, oak woodlands, and river bluffs above the St. Croix. The park is unusual for the metro area: campsites are backpack-in and hike-in only, with no drive-in car camping and no standard RV sites. Campers leave their vehicle in the parking lot and pack gear roughly a mile uphill to the campground.
RV renters therefore stage most trips at private and state-park campgrounds on the Wisconsin side of the St. Croix, all within a short drive of Afton. Willow River State Park Campground near Hudson is the closest full-service public option, while Apple River Hide-A-Way, Float-Rite Park, and Rivers Edge Campground cluster around Somerset along the Apple River tubing corridor. Golden Acres RV Park in Stillwater offers a quieter, hookup-focused base closer to Afton.
Together these campgrounds cover the full range of trip styles, from state-park hiking bases to river-recreation resorts geared to families and larger groups.
Things to do around Afton
The St. Croix National Scenic Riverway is the primary draw. Boating, paddling, swimming, and fishing anchor most summer trips, and Afton State Park sits directly on the river with over 20 miles of hiking trails, a sandy swimming beach, and a visitor center with interpretive displays. Trails traverse remnant and restored prairies, wind down deep ravines, and rise to grassy ridgetops and bluffs above the river.
Across the river in Wisconsin, Willow River State Park features Willow Falls and the Willow River Gorge, with prairie remnants, miles of hiking trails, and a nature center. Little Falls Lake has a swimming beach and boat launch. Tubing the Apple River out of Somerset is the region's signature family activity, with shuttle-based floats operated by several riverfront campgrounds. Historic downtowns in Stillwater and Hudson add restaurants, shops, and the St. Croix Crossing bridge walk.

The camping season in the St. Croix Valley is shaped by a long winter and a short, intense summer. Afton State Park is open year-round, and it keeps water and toilets available through winter along with about 18 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails. Wisconsin state parks including Willow River shift most water systems and full-service facilities to a warm-season schedule, with winter camping typically first-come, first-served and reduced amenities.
Summer is peak. Apple River tubing operators run their main season from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and weekends fill early. Holiday weekends often carry minimum-stay requirements at both state and private campgrounds.
Spring and fall are shoulder seasons with cooler nights, fewer crowds, and better trail conditions for hiking. Fall color along the river bluffs typically peaks in the first half of October. Winter camping is possible for the well-equipped: Afton State Park keeps ski and snowshoe trails open, and its cabins and yurts stay bookable through the cold months, making it one of the few metro-area parks with year-round shelter options.

What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of quiet bluff-country state parks and lively private river resorts within a 30-minute drive of Afton. Willow River is the region's flagship public RV base, with tent, trailer, and RV sites on the southern shore of Little Falls Lake, a portion of which offer electric hookups. Facilities include flush toilets, showers, and a seasonal dump station.
The Apple River campgrounds are tubing-focused and skew social, with tree-lined riverside sites, tube rentals, and shuttle service. Sites can be tight on peak weekends, and RV renters should confirm amp service and rig-length limits at booking. Golden Acres RV Park offers a quieter, hookup-oriented alternative closer to Stillwater.
Minnesota has a firewood rule worth planning around: it is against Minnesota law to bring firewood from home. Buy locally at the park or a nearby vendor.
