Campgrounds and RV parks near Bagley, MN

The headwaters of the Mississippi River are the anchor attraction. At Itasca State Park, visitors can wade across the Mississippi at its source and explore over 32,000 acres with more than 100 lakes, old-growth pine forests, and 49 miles of hiking trails. Bike paths, paddling, swim beaches, and naturalist programs round out the summer offerings. At La Salle Lake State Recreation Area, 11.5 miles of trails wind through some of the most pristine parts of the recreation area ranging from easy to difficult terrain, and at 213 feet deep, La Salle Lake is the deepest lake fully contained in Minnesota, spanning 221 acres. Anglers target walleye, northern pike, bluegill, and crappie from the fishing pier or boat launch.

The prime RV window runs late spring through early fall. Campsites at Itasca are only open from May to October, with the exception of backpacking sites and select electric sites at the Pine Ridge Campground, and the park is busiest during July and August, when crowds and bugs are heaviest. Reserving early for those months is essential. Shoulder seasons trade crowds for cooler nights. Spring and summer bring orchids in bloom, and fall brings foliage color. Late spring through early fall shows the parks at their best, while winter brings harsh conditions with limited access and reduced services. Winter camping is possible but limited. Select sites with hookups remain open year-round for winter camping, though bathhouses close and water is shut off during winter months; outhouses serve winter campers. At La Salle Lake, flush toilets and showers are available from the fishing opener to the first Sunday in October, so plan accordingly for late-season stays.

Sites in the area range from full-hookup RV pads to rustic tent spots. At La Salle Lake State Recreation Area, with full hook-ups at each site and lengthy parking spurs, the campground can accommodate any size camping unit. In Itasca, each campsite has a parking spur, table, fire ring and grill, and campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, trash collection and a dump station. Cell reception is generally usable but not guaranteed. Cell service is good at Itasca, while at La Salle Lake cell phone signal is limited in the park, but there is Wi-Fi available. Expect mosquitoes in summer, black bear country protocols for food storage, and quiet-hour enforcement in the state park loops. Firewood should be purchased locally to prevent the spread of invasive pests.
