Campgrounds and RV parks near Birchwood Village, MN

Water dominates the itinerary. The St. Croix River runs the length of the region and is popular for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing for walleye, northerns, bass, and trout. Big Marine Lake, Square Lake, and Little Falls Lake add swimming beaches, boat launches, and paddling closer to the campgrounds themselves. On land, Savanna - William O Brien State Park offers hiking trails through oak savanna, wetlands, and wooded glacial moraine along the St. Croix River. Willow River State Park Campground is the base for hiking to Willow Falls, with four viewpoints and more than 13 miles of trails through the Willow River Gorge. Historic Stillwater, roughly 15 minutes from Birchwood Village, adds riverboat cruises, a lift bridge, and downtown dining that works well as a rest-day stop between camping nights.

The main RV season runs from late spring through mid-fall. Willow River State Park Campground takes reservations from mid-May through October, with water systems turned off and buildings closed from early October through mid-May; winter camping there is first-come, first-served. Savanna - William O Brien State Park is open year-round, but its dump station operates only from mid-April through mid-October, and other campground buildings including flush toilets and showers are seasonal. Summer weekends are the busiest window. Willow River has one of the highest occupancy rates in the Wisconsin State Park System, and Minnesota state park weekend sites frequently book out weeks in advance. Holiday weekends at Willow River carry a three-night minimum, and a two-night minimum applies from mid-May through October. Shoulder seasons trade some services for space. Spring brings wildflowers and running waterfalls but muddy trails; fall offers cool nights, oak color, and easier reservations. Winter is cold and snowy, with some cabins and trails staying open for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, but most RV services shut off.

Expect a mix of state-park rustic and full-hookup private parks. Savanna - William O Brien State Park has 125 single-family sites, 71 with electric hookups, and accommodates rigs up to 60 feet, with modern restrooms, showers, and a seasonal dump station. Willow River State Park Campground has around 130 sites split across the 100, 200, and 300 loops, with 59 electric sites and flush toilets and shower buildings in season. Private parks lean more amenity-heavy. Disabled Veterans Campground on Big Marine Lake offers hookups, lake access, and boat rentals. Golden Acres RV Park sits on Square Lake with a swim beach and boat rentals, though many sites are seasonal and daily rentals are limited. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through summer, so pack repellent. Wisconsin also restricts moving firewood across county lines, so plan to buy it on site.
