Campgrounds near Buffalo Lake, Minnesota
Buffalo Lake is a small city in Renville County in south-central Minnesota, positioned on the prairie between the Minnesota River Valley to the south and the Twin Cities metro to the east. RV travelers use it as a quiet base for exploring the river valley's state parks, tribal lands, and small German- and Scandinavian-heritage towns.
The closest developed camping is at Fort Ridgely State Park, a Minnesota DNR park with 31 drive-in campsites and 3 walk-in sites along Cottonwood Creek, plus an equestrian loop reachable via the Horse Camp - Fort Ridgely State Park. South of Buffalo Lake, the Semi-Modern - Flandrau State Park sits on the edge of New Ulm along the Cottonwood River, with additional walk-in and rustic options in a 92-site system.
Full-hookup RV travelers typically stage at Jackpot Junction Casino Campground on the Lower Sioux Indian Community lands just south of Morton, while Spirit of Ripley RV Campground and Shirley's Park and Country Retreat - Seasonal Campground and Kayak Rental offer smaller, private-park alternatives closer to the lakes and prairie.
Things to do near Buffalo Lake
The Minnesota River Valley anchors most day trips. Hiking trails wind through prairie and wooded terrain at Fort Ridgely State Park, which has roughly eight miles of hiking trail plus twelve miles of horse trails and a nine-hole golf course, the only one inside a Minnesota state park. History-minded families can tour the fort ruins, museum, and monuments tied to the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862.
At Flandrau State Park near New Ulm, the park's chlorinated sand-bottom swimming pond, beach, and shaded picnic areas draw families in summer. New Ulm itself adds German-heritage stops such as Schell's Brewery and the downtown Glockenspiel.
Paddlers can float sections of the Minnesota and Cottonwood rivers, fish stocked ponds and trout streams inside the state parks, or rent kayaks locally. The Jackpot Junction complex adds a casino, Dacotah Ridge golf, and live entertainment for evenings off the trail.

December - February
23° / 9°F 22 mmCold and snowy; campground roads not plowed at Fort Ridgely
The prime RV window runs from late April through mid-October. Fort Ridgely State Park keeps camping available year-round, with 15 electric and 16 non-electric sites available in winter, though the park does not plow the campground road, so winter campers must hike to the sites after snowfall. The Horse Camp is open April 1 to November 1, with day riding allowed until the trails are snow-covered. Summer weekends at Flandrau and Fort Ridgely book out early, especially around holiday weekends.
Spring brings wildflowers and higher water on the Minnesota and Cottonwood rivers, but also mud and biting insects by late May. Summer is warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms; fire restrictions appear during dry stretches, and when fire danger is very high the DNR bans campfires and charcoal grills in park fire rings while still allowing gas camp stoves.
Fall delivers cool nights, oak color, and thinner crowds, with the group camp at Fort Ridgely available through November 1.
How to book campgrounds
Minnesota state park sites at Fort Ridgely and Flandrau are booked through the DNR's central system. Online reservations can be made up to 120 days in advance, 24 hours a day, except on the first day a new date opens, when online booking is not available before 8 a.m. Central time. Book online at mndnr.gov/reservations or by phone at 866-857-2757. A state park vehicle permit is required in addition to the campsite fee.
Jackpot Junction Casino Campground is booked directly through the casino, which takes reservations by phone at 1-800-946-0077, and players-club members often see discounted rates. Private parks like Spirit of Ripley RV Campground and Shirley's Park and Country Retreat handle their own bookings, so contact the operator directly to confirm dates, hookups, and rig-length limits.
What to expect on the ground
Sites vary widely across this corridor. Jackpot Junction Casino Campground sits adjacent to the casino south of Morton, with concrete pads, 30/50-amp full hookups, cable TV, WiFi, and a bathhouse, and it accommodates rigs up to about 60 feet. State park sites tend to be shorter and more wooded, with electric-only hookups at best and shared shower buildings.
Drive-in sites in the Semi-Modern - Flandrau State Park loop can feel close together, while walk-in and rustic sites offer more seclusion for those willing to hike a short distance. Cell coverage is generally reliable on the major carriers along the river valley but weakens in wooded coulees.
Mosquitoes and ticks peak in June and July, so pack repellent and check kids and pets after hikes. Grocery runs are easiest in Hutchinson, Redwood Falls, or New Ulm.
