Campgrounds near Burnsville, Minnesota
Burnsville sits along the Minnesota River just south of Minneapolis, placing RV travelers within a short drive of both Twin Cities attractions and the lakes, rivers, and regional parks of Dakota and Scott counties. The area functions as a practical base: interstate access via I-35 and Highway 13, full-service RV parks close to town, and quieter lakeside options within thirty to forty-five minutes.
Private campgrounds handle most RV traffic in the immediate metro. Average daytime highs reach about 27°C in summer, and January nights typically fall well below freezing, which shapes a camping season that runs primarily from spring thaw through mid-fall.
Nearby options include Town and Country Campground and RV Park, Dakotah Meadows RV Park at Mystic Lake, Fish Lake Acres Campground, Minneapolis Southwest KOA Holiday in Jordan, and Winjums Shady Acres Resort. Together they cover pull-throughs with full hookups, cabin add-ons, and lake-adjacent sites suitable for families and longer stays.
Things to do near Burnsville
Burnsville is roughly twenty minutes from Mall of America and the Minnesota Zoo, and about thirty minutes from downtown Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Families based at Town and Country Campground and RV Park or Dakotah Meadows RV Park can reach Valleyfair amusement park, Canterbury Park, and the Mystic Lake entertainment complex without long drives.
Outdoor options cluster around the Minnesota River Valley. Lebanon Hills Regional Park, Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve, and Cleary Lake offer hiking, mountain biking, and paddling. Fish Lake Acres Campground and Winjums Shady Acres Resort put anglers on productive metro-area lakes for walleye, bass, and panfish, while the Big Rivers Regional Trail and Minnesota Valley State Trail suit cyclists staying in the corridor.

The practical RV season around Burnsville runs from late April through mid-October. Most private parks open once frost leaves the ground and shut water systems down before hard freezes return. Memorial Day through Labor Day is peak, and summer weekends at Mystic Lake and lake-adjacent parks book out weeks ahead.
Spring brings variable weather and higher river levels along the Minnesota River bottoms, which can affect low-lying sites. June is the wettest month on average, and afternoon thunderstorms are common through mid- and late summer. Bug pressure, especially mosquitoes, peaks from June into early August.
Fall is the sweet spot for cooler nights, thinner crowds, and color along the river bluffs from late September into mid-October. Winter camping is very limited: precipitation totals drop sharply from December through February, but sub-zero nights close most private RV parks entirely.

Booking and reservations
Private campgrounds around Burnsville, including Town and Country Campground and RV Park, Minneapolis Southwest KOA Holiday, and Winjums Shady Acres Resort, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day) commonly fill two to three months ahead, and full-hookup pull-throughs go first.
Minnesota state park sites, useful as a backup within an hour of Burnsville, are booked through the state's ReserveMN system on a rolling window that opens 120 days before arrival. Dakotah Meadows RV Park is operated by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and books through the Mystic Lake property. For any lake-focused stay, reserve as soon as the calendar opens.
What to expect on arrival
Sites at metro-area parks such as Town and Country Campground and RV Park and Minneapolis Southwest KOA Holiday are generally level with 30 and 50 amp service, water, and sewer at most pull-throughs. Wi-Fi is common but variable under tree cover, and cell service across Dakota and Scott counties is strong.
Expect standard quiet hours, leashed-pet rules, and campfire restrictions that can shift during dry summers. Firewood is typically sold on site to limit movement of emerald ash borer and other pests. Bring bug spray from June through August, and plan for shoulder-season nights that can drop into the single digits Celsius even after warm afternoons.
