Camping near Coleraine, Minnesota
Coleraine sits on the north shore of Trout Lake in Itasca County, in the heart of north-central Minnesota's lake country. The town is roughly 200 miles north of Minneapolis and St. Paul and about 80 miles northwest of Duluth, which makes it a reasonable drive from either metro for RV renters heading into the north woods.
The surrounding Itasca County landscape is defined by mixed pine and hardwood forest, hundreds of lakes, and easy access to the Mississippi River. RV renters typically choose between a handful of private and municipal campgrounds close to town and rustic state park camping to the west along the river.
Options within a short drive include Itasca County Fairgrounds Campground and Sugar Bay Campground-Resort, plus Hill City Park & Campground and Blueberry Hills Golf Course & RV Park farther south. For a quieter, primitive experience, Schoolcraft State Park is a secluded north woods park where the trail system leads hikers through virgin pine forest, canoeists and anglers enjoy the gentle waters of the Mississippi River, and a boat access, picnic area, canoe and drive-in campsites are available to visitors.
Things to do around Coleraine
Fishing, paddling, and biking drive most trip plans. Trout Lake sits at the edge of town, and the area includes Mount Itasca, area golf, and the Mesabi Trail. Cotton Park on the north end of Trout Lake has a public beach and boat landing.
West of town, Schoolcraft State Park offers two miles of trails that wind through the virgin pine forest, while paddlers can explore the waters of the Mississippi River using the park's boat access point, and anglers can cast a line for walleye and northern pike. The Forest History Center near Grand Rapids adds a rainy-day option for families.
Hill City Park & Campground and Blueberry Hills Golf Course & RV Park work as bases for exploring the Hill City area, while Sugar Bay Campground-Resort and Itasca County Fairgrounds Campground keep travelers closer to Coleraine and Grand Rapids.

The prime RV season in this part of Minnesota runs from late May through mid-September. While the park is open for day-use recreation year-round, camping at Schoolcraft State Park is available just from mid-May to early September, and private campgrounds typically follow a similar warm-season schedule. June through August delivers long daylight hours, warm afternoons, and peak lake use.
Spring is short and can be muddy, with ice-out on inland lakes usually in April or early May. Bugs matter here: black flies and mosquitoes are heavy from late May into July, and ticks are active from spring through fall, so wearing appropriate clothing and using insect repellent is recommended.
Fall brings cool nights, fewer bugs, and color in the maples and aspens through September and early October. Winters are long and cold. While the park is open year-round, the campground closes in the fall and opens in mid-May, and once the campgrounds are closed, all drinking water is turned off in the park.
How to book a campsite near Coleraine
Private campgrounds around Coleraine, including Itasca County Fairgrounds Campground, Sugar Bay Campground-Resort, Hill City Park & Campground, and Blueberry Hills Golf Course & RV Park, are booked directly with the operator by phone or through their websites. Reserving well ahead is smart for summer weekends and any dates around the Fourth of July.
Schoolcraft State Park uses the Minnesota DNR reservation system. All lodging and all campsites in state parks and recreation areas are 100% reservable and require a reservation, and campers can book online or call 866-857-2757. Reservations can be made the same day as arrival, and up to 120 days before the arrival date, with online reservations available 24 hours a day except for the first day a reservation becomes available, and popular summer dates go fast at the 120-day mark.
All vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must have a Minnesota state park vehicle permit, including day visits as well as overnight stays.
What to expect on arrival
Sites near Coleraine range from full-hookup private RV parks to rustic state park sites. At Schoolcraft State Park, the campsites do not have water hookups, electric hookups, sewer hookups, shower facilities, dump stations, or modern restrooms, but visitors can make use of the drinking water stations and vault toilets available within the campground, and the sites are all back-in and can accommodate rigs of up to 40 feet in length. RV renters should arrive with full fresh-water tanks and empty holding tanks.
Schoolcraft sits off MN-6 and US-2, and after leaving the highway visitors should be prepared for gravel and dirt roads. Cell coverage in the deeper woods is spotty, so downloading maps before leaving town is wise.
Expect north-woods conditions: pine-shaded sites, loons on the water, and biting insects in early summer. Quiet hours are from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., and a campsite's occupancy is limited to one camping group of six people or less, one camping shelter, and one vehicle.
