Campgrounds and RV parks near Hilltop, MN

The Twin Cities metro puts a full slate of activities within reach of an RV site. Families can pair campground time with the Mall of America and Nickelodeon Universe, the Minnesota Zoo, the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, and the riverfront trails around Saint Anthony Falls and the Stone Arch Bridge. Outdoor days are easy to build. Regional and state parks in the surrounding counties add paved and unpaved trails, swim beaches, fishing piers, and boat launches. Big Marine Lake, Ham Lake, and the many lakes in Washington and Anoka counties give RV travelers straightforward access to paddling, swimming, and shoreline fishing. In summer, Twins baseball, Saints baseball, the Minnesota State Fair in late August, and free outdoor concerts fill evenings back in the city.

Camping around Hilltop is a strongly seasonal activity. Minneapolis summers are warm and wet, while winters are cold and snowy, and the shoulder months can swing quickly between the two. Most private RV parks in the metro run a spring-through-fall season, typically opening once frost risk eases in April or May and closing after the leaf change in October. Summer is peak season. June is usually the wettest month of the year in Minneapolis, but it also brings the longest days, the warmest lake temperatures, and the fullest event calendar, so weekends at the closer campgrounds book out well in advance. July and August are the hottest months, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Fall brings cooler nights, fewer bugs, and vivid color through late September and October. Winter camping is limited to a handful of year-round sites and Minnesota state park campgrounds that stay open with reduced services, since the Twin Cities sees around 72 days a year when the temperature never rises above freezing.

Expect a metro camping experience rather than a wilderness one. Sites closest to Hilltop are full-hookup RV parks with paved or gravel pads, laundry, Wi-Fi, and easy freeway access, aimed at travelers using the Twin Cities as a destination or a stopover. Rigs of most lengths are accommodated at the larger private parks, but call ahead to confirm pull-through length and slide clearance, especially at older or lake-oriented properties. Mosquitoes are a real factor from late spring through midsummer, so pack repellent and screen room gear. Minnesota has strict firewood rules to slow the spread of tree pests: buy certified firewood or purchase it near where you plan to burn it, rather than hauling it in from out of state. Pets are welcome at most parks on a leash no longer than six feet and must be attended at all times.
