Campgrounds near Columbia Heights, Minnesota
Columbia Heights sits just north of Minneapolis in the Twin Cities metro, putting RV travelers within a short drive of full-hookup parks, tribal-land RV resorts, and state park campgrounds across the seven-county region. The area works well as a base for city sightseeing, Mississippi River recreation, and day trips to lakes and regional parks in Anoka and Washington counties.
Options closest to town include Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey in Maple Grove, Ham Lake Resort to the north, Town and Country Campground and RV Park, Dakotah Meadows RV Park in Prior Lake with paved pull-through and back-in sites offering electric, water, and sewer hookups, and the volunteer-run Disabled Veterans Campground on Big Marine Lake. Together they cover a mix of urban-adjacent commercial parks and quieter lakeside settings.
Most private parks in the metro handle big rigs and offer full hookups, while nearby state park and regional park campgrounds trend smaller and more rustic. Booking ahead is important from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Twin Cities campgrounds see steady demand from both local weekenders and long-distance travelers passing through on I-94, I-35, and I-694.
Things to do near Columbia Heights
The Twin Cities put major attractions within a short drive: pro sports, the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, the Mall of America, and dozens of regional parks and lakes. The Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey sits close to pro football, basketball, and baseball stadiums, is roughly 25 miles from the National Sports Center in Blaine, and puts campers about 30 miles from the Mall of America.
Outdoor options are strong. The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area runs through the metro, and county and regional parks around Ham Lake, Big Marine Lake, and the Minnesota River Valley add swimming beaches, paddling, and paved bike trails. Activities at nearby full-service parks include biking, hiking, fishing, and wildlife watching.
Families staying at Dakotah Meadows RV Park can also reach Mystic Lake Casino, Valleyfair, and Cleary Lake Regional Park without long drives.

The Twin Cities have a strong four-season climate. Minneapolis experiences a humid continental climate marked by a very strong seasonal temperature contrast, with warm summers and cold winters that bring significant snowfall. Precipitation is moderate throughout the year, with a strong pattern of wetter summers and drier winters. Most private RV parks in the metro operate roughly from late April or May through October, with peak occupancy from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Spring can be wet and muddy, and shoulder-season nights stay cold into May. Summer brings the best weather for camping but also the highest demand, especially on weekends, holidays, and during Minnesota State Fair dates in late August. Thunderstorms are common in June and July.
Fall delivers clear days, cooler nights, and strong color from late September into mid-October, making it a popular window for shorter Twin Cities trips. Winter camping is limited to a handful of Minnesota state parks that keep sites open year-round, and reservations are still required.

How to book campgrounds near Columbia Heights
Private parks in the metro, including Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey, Town and Country Campground and RV Park, Ham Lake Resort, and Dakotah Meadows RV Park, take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Summer weekends and event dates fill first, so booking several weeks out is advisable. Reservations at Dakotah Meadows RV Park are worth making early, especially around major events at the adjacent Mystic Lake Casino.
For Minnesota state parks in the region, bookings go through the Minnesota DNR reservation system, online or by phone, up to 120 days before the arrival date. Campsites require a reservation before they may be occupied, year-round, and the DNR recommends booking before leaving home because cell coverage can be unpredictable at some parks.
A state park vehicle permit is also required for any vehicle entering a Minnesota state park or recreation area, in addition to the camping reservation.
What to expect on-site
Metro-area private parks generally offer full hookups, paved or gravel pads, laundry, showers, and Wi-Fi. Dakotah Meadows RV Park has paved pull-through and back-in RV sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups, plus shower and restroom facilities accessible around the clock with guest key cards. Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey offers mini golf, horseshoes, a playground, game room, and swimming pool, along with sunny or shady level sites and pull-through sites that accommodate larger rigs.
Expect mosquitoes near wooded and lakeside sites, especially after rain. Bring bug spray, and check whether firewood must be purchased on-site, since Minnesota restricts moving firewood to help slow tree pests.
State park and volunteer-run sites, including the Disabled Veterans Campground on Big Marine Lake, tend to be more rustic, with fewer hookups and quieter surroundings than commercial parks.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Columbia%20Heights%2C%20MinnesotaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Columbia Heights, Minnesota?
Good news for first-time renters: your regular Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Columbia Heights. Minnesota only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license for motorhomes with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and virtually every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, and fifth wheel on RVezy falls well under that threshold. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow, so there's no DMV trip or special test. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you're set for your Minnesota RV trip.
dps.mn.gov/divisions/dvs/license-and-id/Pages/default.aspxIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my Columbia Heights RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Columbia Heights booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you pull out of the host's driveway. The protection plan provides meaningful financial protection against most damages to the vehicle, giving you real peace of mind on Minnesota's highways. During checkout you choose between different coverage levels to match your trip and comfort level. If you get a flat on I-694 or need a battery jump near Bunker Hills, one call to RVezy roadside assistance gets help dispatched. That built-in safety net is why many first-time renters feel confident booking on RVezy.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my RV rental in Columbia Heights?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a clear cancellation policy to every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund outcomes depend on how far in advance you cancel, and RVezy also considers extenuating circumstances such as severe weather or natural disasters. Because RVezy (not the individual host) manages the cancellation policy, the process is consistent across every listing in Columbia Heights. If a blizzard, ice storm, or flooding is in the forecast, contact RVezy support before your trip start date so the team can walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Columbia Heights?
Yes, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Columbia Heights, and you can find them quickly by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Each host sets their own pet rules (some ask for a small cleaning fee), so review the listing or message the host before booking. Once on the road, dogs love the paved paths around Silver Lake right in Columbia Heights, the off-leash area at Sand Creek Dog Park in Coon Rapids, and trails at nearby regional parks. For camping, Lebanon Hills Regional Park and Bunker Hills Regional Park both allow leashed dogs, making a family RV trip in Minnesota easy with four-legged companions.
anokacountyparks.com/parks-trails/bunker-hills-regional-park/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite or home in Columbia Heights?
Yes, RV delivery in Columbia Heights is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig through Twin Cities traffic. Many local hosts will drive the RV right to your driveway, a nearby campground like Bunker Hills or Lebanon Hills, or even a friend's lake cabin, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Delivery fees are set by each host and usually scale with distance, so a drop within Anoka County costs far less than a haul up to Mille Lacs Lake. Use the Delivery filter when searching to see hosts who offer it, and message them for a custom quote.
dot.state.mn.us/trafficeng/How far can I travel from Columbia Heights on an RV road trip?
You've got incredible range from Columbia Heights, which sits right at the I-694 and Highway 65 junction, giving you fast access to Minnesota's best RV destinations. Popular RV road trips from Columbia Heights include Itasca State Park (about 215 miles northwest, where the Mississippi begins), Duluth and the North Shore (about 155 miles north on I-35), Voyageurs National Park (about 290 miles up Highway 53), Mille Lacs Lake (about 95 miles north), and the St. Croix River Valley around Taylors Falls (about 50 miles east). Each host sets a daily mileage allowance, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer hauls. Always confirm the mileage policy and per-mile overage rate before booking.
dot.state.mn.us/maps/What are the best campgrounds near Columbia Heights, MN?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Columbia Heights. Top picks within an hour's drive include Bunker Hills Campground in Coon Rapids (about 12 miles north, with a dump station, beach, and water park nearby), Lebanon Hills Regional Park Campground in Eagan (about 25 miles south, with full hookups and 2,000 acres of trails), Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey in Maple Grove (about 15 miles west, ideal for families), Chain of Lakes Rice Creek Campground in Lino Lakes (about 12 miles north), and Wildwood RV Park in Taylors Falls (about 50 miles east on the St. Croix). All five accept big rigs and have dump stations on-site, making them perfect bases for your Twin Cities adventures.
anokacountyparks.com/parks-trails/bunker-hills-regional-park/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Columbia Heights?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for an RV trip from Columbia Heights, with daytime highs of 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and warm summer nights perfect for campfires. June and early July bring wildflowers, fireflies, and full-blast lake season, while late September and early October deliver legendary North Shore fall colors and far fewer mosquitoes. Winter RVing is absolutely doable here too if you're up for an adventure: some Minnesota hosts list four-season rigs with heated holding tanks for ice fishing trips to Mille Lacs or weekend stays at state parks that keep electric sites open year-round. Pro tip: book by February for July weekends, when Twin Cities campgrounds fill fast.
weather.gov/mpx/climateI've never rented an RV before. Will I be able to figure it out?
Totally, and most first-time renters in Columbia Heights are surprised how quickly it clicks. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water and propane systems, dump procedures, and driving quirks, so you never leave wondering what a switch does. Many hosts also send a printed cheat sheet or quick video links you can rewatch at the campground. If you want extra confidence, choose a smaller Class B campervan or travel trailer for your first time renting an RV, message the host beforehand with questions, and plan a short shakedown trip to Bunker Hills or William O'Brien State Park before tackling a longer haul.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/camping.htmlWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Minnesota trip?
You won't be stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you have a flat tire on I-35W, a dead battery at a Mille Lacs boat launch, or need a tow off Highway 61 along the North Shore, one call gets professional help dispatched to your location. The RVezy renter protection plan also helps with covered mechanical issues that arise through no fault of your own. Your host is a second resource: most owners know their rig well and can troubleshoot quirks like a finicky propane regulator or a tripped GFCI over the phone. Save both numbers in your contacts before pulling away and you will have backup all trip long.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV rental from Columbia Heights into Wisconsin or Canada?
Yes to Wisconsin, and often yes to Canada with prior host approval. Crossing into Wisconsin is straightforward and opens up routes like the St. Croix River Valley, the Apostle Islands (about 240 miles northeast), and Door County (about 360 miles east). For Canada, message the host directly from the listing before booking, since cross-border travel requires their written approval and confirmation that coverage extends across the border. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage do not apply there. From Columbia Heights, the International Falls border crossing into Ontario is about 290 miles north and pairs nicely with a Voyageurs National Park visit.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for my Columbia Heights RV trip?
Budgeting fuel is easier than you'd think. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, 18 to 22 mpg for a Class B campervan rental in Columbia Heights, and 12 to 16 mpg for your tow vehicle when pulling a travel trailer or fifth wheel. Minnesota gas prices typically run close to the national average, with Columbia Heights stations along Central Avenue and University Avenue often a few cents cheaper than downtown Minneapolis. For a 300-mile weekend loop to Duluth and back in a Class C, plan around $90 to $120 in fuel. Diesel pumps are easy to find at Holiday and Kwik Trip stations along I-35 and I-94.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground for my Twin Cities RV trip?
For peak summer weekends, lock in your campsite as soon as you book the RV, ideally three to four months out. Minnesota State Parks like William O'Brien, Afton, and Wild River release reservations on a rolling 120-day window through the official reservation system, and prime Friday and Saturday sites near the Twin Cities sell out within minutes. Anoka County Parks (including Bunker Hills) and Three Rivers Park District take reservations online too. For midweek trips or shoulder season (May, September, October), two to three weeks ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: if state parks are full, check Chain of Lakes Rice Creek Campground in Lino Lakes or Country Camping on the Rum River, which tend to have last-minute openings.
dnr.state.mn.us/reservations/index.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Columbia Heights and the Twin Cities?
Driving an RV around Columbia Heights is easier than in most metros because you are just inside the I-694 beltway, which lets you skip downtown Minneapolis entirely. Stick to the freeways (I-694, I-35W, Highway 10, Highway 65) for wide lanes and predictable traffic, with rush hour peaking 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays. Avoid older bridges in downtown St. Paul and the narrow streets of Dinkytown and the Northeast Minneapolis arts district with anything over 25 feet. Winter trips from November through March bring snow and ice, so check 511mn.org before heading out. If city driving makes you nervous, ask your host about RV delivery in Columbia Heights and skip it entirely.
511mn.org/What hookups and dump stations can I expect at campgrounds near Columbia Heights?
You'll find excellent hookup options across the Twin Cities. Bunker Hills Campground and Lebanon Hills Regional Park both offer 30 and 50 amp electric with water, plus dump stations on-site. Minneapolis Northwest KOA in Maple Grove and Town & Country RV Park in Savage provide full hookups (electric, water, sewer at your site) so you can stay parked all weekend without breaking camp to dump. For free or low-cost dumping closer to home, Bunker Hills' day-use dump station is open to the public for a small fee, and several Holiday and Kwik Trip stations along Highway 10 in Anoka and Coon Rapids offer potable water fills. Pro tip: always dump black tank first, then gray, to flush the hose clean.
anokacountyparks.com/parks-trails/bunker-hills-regional-park/camping/What amenities come standard in a Columbia Heights RV rental?
You'll feel right at home. Most motorhome rentals in Columbia Heights come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, dinette and sofa that convert to extra sleeping space, a kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave, propane stove, and oven, a full bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace heat, and seatbelts for everyone on board. Class A and larger Class C rigs often add a TV, outdoor speakers, and a built-in generator for boondocking. Wi-Fi is sometimes included via a host-provided hotspot, though Verizon and T-Mobile both have strong coverage across most Minnesota campgrounds. Check the listing's amenities list before booking, and message the host if a specific feature like a backup camera or solar setup matters to you.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/camping.htmlWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my RVezy rental?
Hosts make trip prep easy with optional add-ons you can select right at booking. Popular extras for a Columbia Heights RV rental include kitchen kits (pots, plates, utensils), linen and bedding packages, camp chairs and outdoor mats, portable grills, generators, bike racks, and pre-stocked firewood for those Lebanon Hills evenings. Many hosts also offer RV delivery and setup for a flat fee, plus optional dump and cleaning services. Mileage allowances are set by each host: many include a set number of free miles per night with a per-mile overage rate, and some offer unlimited mileage for longer Minnesota road trips. Confirm pickup and drop-off times with your host directly, since they often flex on timing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Columbia%20Heights%2C%20MinnesotaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Columbia Heights, RVezy charges your credit or debit card through the platform (no cash or off-platform payments), so there is a clear paper trail and full customer support behind every transaction. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before pickup, with the amount depending on the RV class and host, and it is released after drop-off once the host confirms no damage, missing items, or extra cleaning. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and drop-off, return the rig with the fuel and propane levels listed, and stay within your mileage allowance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Columbia Heights for winter or cold-weather camping?
Yes, and a Minnesota winter RV trip is a genuine bucket-list experience. Several Columbia Heights hosts list four-season rigs with enclosed and heated holding tanks, double-pane windows, beefed-up furnaces, and skirting kits that keep things toasty even when it's well below zero outside (January lows here average around 8 degrees Fahrenheit). Use the listing filters to search for cold-weather features, and message the host to confirm the rig handles sustained sub-freezing temps. Pair your booking with a shore-power campsite at Fort Snelling State Park, which keeps electric sites open year-round, or head to Mille Lacs Lake for ice fishing. Pro tip: ask your host about non-toxic RV antifreeze for the pipes and a heated water hose for hookups.
