Campgrounds and RV parks near Fairfax, MN

History drives much of the local visitor traffic. Fort Ridgely State Park preserves the site of the historic outpost and the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War battlefield, with a museum, cemetery, and stone ruins on the grounds. The park also holds the only nine-hole golf course in the Minnesota state park system, an unusual amenity for a state park stay. Outdoor activity centers on trails, water, and wildlife. Fort Ridgely offers hiking, horse trails, a stocked trout stream, and cross-country ski and snowmobile trails in winter. Flandrau State Park in New Ulm features the Big Cottonwood River and a sand-bottom swimming pond, a strong draw for families with kids. New Ulm itself, about 25 minutes south, adds German heritage sites, Schell's Brewery tours, and Oktoberfest events for shoulder-season trips.

Camping seasons vary by campground type. The Fort Ridgely State Park campground operates seasonally from early May through late October, and Jackpot Junction Casino Campground runs on a seasonal basis from spring through fall. Flandrau State Park offers camping year-round, though winter amenities are reduced and some facilities close outside the main season. Summer is the peak booking window. Weekends fill first, especially electric sites and cabins. Reservations at Flandrau are recommended during busy periods and around events like New Ulm's Oktoberfest, which lands in early October. Shoulder seasons trade heat and mosquitoes for cool nights and better site availability. Flandrau sits near marshland and can see heavy mosquito activity in late spring and midsummer, so campers should pack repellent. Winter travelers can still ski or snowmobile at Fort Ridgely, but the drive-in campground is closed and overnight options shift to lodging such as the park's chalet or farmhouse.

Facilities at Fort Ridgely lean rustic, with drive-in and walk-in sites, a mix of electric and non-electric sites, drinking water, flush toilets, and hot showers in a historic CCC-era bathhouse. The equestrian loop is separate and serves horse campers. Flandrau is closer to a small city, which brings trade-offs. Sites in the main campground are arranged in loops with limited privacy, and campers should expect some road and aircraft noise during the day. The semi-modern loop can accommodate tents, trailers, and larger RVs, with flush toilets and showers available during the main camping season. Jackpot Junction offers a different experience, with full-hookup sites, a dump station, and easy walking access to the casino. Kuhar Park provides concrete pads with water and electric hookups. Cell service can be spotty at state park sites, so downloading maps before arrival is wise.
