Camping near Golden Valley, Minnesota
Golden Valley sits in the western Twin Cities metro, roughly seven miles from downtown Minneapolis. There are no RV campgrounds inside the city itself, so travelers base themselves at private parks in surrounding suburbs and use the highway network (I-394, I-494, and Highway 169) to reach the city. Town and Country Campground and RV Park in Savage sits south of the metro with accessible proximity to Twin Cities attractions, dining, and shopping.
Northwest of Golden Valley, the Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey sits about 17 miles northwest of downtown Minneapolis on 20 acres of maples, oaks, and green space in Maple Grove. Dakotah Meadows RV Park lies southwest in Prior Lake near Mystic Lake Casino, while Ham Lake Resort and Fish Lake Acres Campground offer lake-oriented stays north of the metro.
Most private parks in the area accept big rigs, provide full hookups, and are within a 30 to 45 minute drive of Golden Valley. That makes the region practical for families splitting time between city attractions and lake country to the north.
Things to do near Golden Valley
Golden Valley itself offers Theodore Wirth Regional Park, one of the largest parks in the Minneapolis system, with mountain-bike trails, a swimming beach at Wirth Lake, and cross-country ski trails in winter. The Chain of Lakes and the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway are minutes east, and downtown Minneapolis, Target Field, and the sculpture garden at Walker Art Center are a short drive away.
Families typically pair a Twin Cities visit with day trips. The Mall of America is the largest shopping mall in the United States and sits about 30 miles from the Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey in Maple Grove. Valleyfair amusement park in Shakopee, the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley, and Como Park Zoo in St. Paul are all within an hour. North of the metro, Ham Lake Resort and Fish Lake Acres Campground put fishing, paddling, and swimming steps from the site.

The core RV season in the Twin Cities runs from mid April through October. Many private parks near Golden Valley operate on a seasonal schedule. Town and Country Campground and RV Park is typically open from April through November, and the Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey runs from April 15 through October 15. Winter camping is limited, and seasonal amenities such as outdoor pools close after Labor Day weekend.
Summer is the busiest stretch. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day book out weeks in advance, and the Minnesota State Fair in late August pulls heavy demand across the metro. At the Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey, the outdoor pool operates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, open 10 AM to 8 PM, weather permitting.
Spring and fall bring cooler nights and fewer crowds. September is often a strong month for RV travel here, with warm days, lower humidity, and fall color starting mid to late month. Expect freezing overnight lows by November, and confirm winterization status with any park before a shoulder-season booking.

How to book a campground near Golden Valley
Private parks in the Twin Cities area handle their own reservations. KOA properties, including the Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey in Maple Grove, book through the KOA website or by phone, and KOA Rewards members receive a discount at checkout. Independent parks such as Town and Country Campground and RV Park, Dakotah Meadows RV Park, Ham Lake Resort, and Fish Lake Acres Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone.
Minnesota state parks and recreation areas within day-trip range use the Minnesota DNR reservation system, which opens bookings up to 120 days in advance. For summer weekends, book private parks two to three months out. Confirm rig length limits, hookup type, and pet policies before paying a deposit.
What to expect on the ground
Most RV parks near Golden Valley are suburban rather than wilderness. Sites tend to be level with gravel or crushed-rock pads and paved interior roads. At Town and Country Campground and RV Park, many sites are tight and close together, while seasonal sites tend to be larger and more wooded. The Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey offers pull-thru RV sites (some up to 75 feet long), shaded tent sites, and camping cabins.
Expect full hookups (water, sewer, 30 and 50 amp electric) at most sites, laundry facilities, bathhouses, a seasonal outdoor pool, and a playground. Cell coverage is strong across the metro; park Wi-Fi is variable. Mosquitoes are heavy near lakes and wetlands in June and July, so bring repellent and screens.

How much does an RV rental in Golden Valley, MN actually cost?
An RV rental in Golden Valley is one of the more affordable ways to explore the Twin Cities and Minnesota's lake country. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers from around $90 to $175 per night, campervans and Class C motorhomes from about $150 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs from roughly $250 to $450 per night. Hosts set their own nightly rates, so shoulder-season trips in May or September often unlock the cheapest RV rental Golden Valley has available. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Many Golden Valley owners take 10 to 20 percent off bookings of 7 or more nights, which makes a week at Itasca or the North Shore very budget-friendly.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Golden%20Valley%2C%20MinnesotaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Golden Valley?
Your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Golden Valley. Minnesota's standard Class D license covers any vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,000 pounds or less, which includes virtually every motorhome, campervan, and travel trailer on RVezy. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and no special RV endorsement is required. You'll need to be 25 or older and upload a valid ID, which RVezy verifies inside the platform. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home auto club before flying in, and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the paperwork really is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Golden Valley RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Golden Valley booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're never stuck wondering what to do if something happens on I-394 or out at Lake Minnetonka. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind. You choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host, so you decide how much extra cushion feels right. Pro tip: first-time renters often pick a higher-tier plan for a Minnesota road trip with kids or pets onboard.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Golden Valley RV trip?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy has its own cancellation policy that applies to every reservation, including a grace-period window after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. Refund amounts after that depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. The cancellation policy is set by RVezy, not individual hosts, so you'll get consistent treatment whether you book a campervan in Golden Valley or a fifth wheel out near Lake Minnetonka. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook. Pro tip: book earlier rather than later. Summer weekends near the Twin Cities fill fast, and the grace period gives you breathing room.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Golden Valley?
Dogs are welcome on plenty of Minnesota adventures. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find a pet-friendly RV rental in Golden Valley in seconds, then message the host about any specifics like breed, size, and number of pets. Once you're on the road, Minnesota State Parks allow leashed pets on most trails and at all drive-in campsites, so William O'Brien State Park and Afton State Park are easy choices. Closer to home, Theodore Wirth Regional Park right next to Golden Valley has an off-leash dog area perfect for a pre-trip romp. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl. Summer humidity in the Twin Cities can be intense for pups by mid-afternoon.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/faq.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway in Golden Valley?
Yes, and it's one of the best advantages of renting locally. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Golden Valley straight to your home, a Twin Cities campground, or a nearby lake destination like Lake Minnetonka or Forest Lake. They'll level the rig, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys, which is gold for a first-time renter. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy and message hosts for a quote (most charge a per-mile rate beyond a free radius). Pro tip: delivery is especially smart if you're flying into Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP). Skip the rental car and have your motorhome rental Golden Valley waiting at your campground instead.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Golden%20Valley%2C%20MinnesotaHow does mileage work and how far can I realistically drive?
You've got plenty of range for an unforgettable Golden Valley RV trip. Hosts set their own mileage policies on RVezy, and many offer generous daily allowances or even an RV rental with unlimited mileage on longer bookings. From Golden Valley, you can reach Duluth and Lake Superior's North Shore in about 2.5 hours (about 150 miles), Itasca State Park (headwaters of the Mississippi) in roughly 3.5 hours (about 215 miles), the Boundary Waters gateway at Ely in about 4.5 hours (about 245 miles), and Voyageurs National Park in around 5 hours (about 290 miles). Pro tip: check the mileage policy in the listing details before booking, and if you're planning a big loop, message the host to discuss a custom package.
dot.state.mn.us/Where should I camp with my RV near Golden Valley?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Golden Valley travelers love. Minneapolis Northwest KOA Journey in Maple Grove (about 15 minutes away) offers full hookups, a pool, and easy highway access. Town and Country Campground in Savage sits about 25 minutes south with shaded full-hookup sites. For a state-park experience, William O'Brien State Park on the Saint Croix River (about an hour east) and Afton State Park are local favorites with electric sites and easy hiking. Pro tip: state-park sites can be reserved up to 120 days out through the Minnesota DNR reservation system, so set a calendar alert for prime summer weekends.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/stay_overnight/index.htmlWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Golden Valley, MN?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for an RV rental in Minnesota, and each slice of that window has its own personality. June through August brings warm days (averaging highs in the upper 70s to low 80s F) and lush green lakeshores, perfect for swimming and paddling. September delivers crisp 60 to 70 F afternoons, with stunning fall color along the Saint Croix and North Shore from late September into mid-October. Spring (May) is quieter, cheaper, and ideal if you don't mind cool nights around 50 F. Pro tip: the Minnesota State Fair in late August and the Renaissance Festival weekends in Shakopee are huge draws. Book your Golden Valley RV trip 3 to 4 months ahead if you're targeting those dates.
weather.gov/mpx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be just fine, and you won't be alone. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, slide-outs, the generator, the water and waste systems, and how to level the rig. Most first time renting an RV in Golden Valley starts with a Class C motorhome or campervan, which drive a lot like a large van or moving truck. Stick to right lanes on I-394 and I-494, give yourself extra braking distance, and avoid the narrow streets of downtown Minneapolis when you can. Pro tip: ask your host about a quick practice loop around their neighborhood before heading out. Most are happy to oblige, and 15 minutes of practice builds huge confidence.
dot.state.mn.us/What if I break down or have an issue on the road?
Help is one phone call away, day or night. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something feels off (a warning light, a finicky slide-out, a propane question), your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app, and RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip. From Golden Valley, you're never far from help: I-394, I-494, and Highway 100 all loop through the metro with frequent service stations. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you pull out of the driveway so it's ready if you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Golden Valley RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Cross-state road trips are absolutely on the table. Most RVezy hosts in Minnesota are happy to let you cross into Wisconsin, Iowa, the Dakotas, or beyond, which opens up classic routes like the Apostle Islands (about 4 hours east) or the Black Hills (about 10 hours west). Canada travel may also be allowed, but it depends on the host and their insurance, so message them through the listing before booking to confirm. One important note: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage limits. Pro tip: a popular RV road trip from Golden Valley is the Lake Superior Circle Tour, looping through Duluth, Thunder Bay, and back. Just sort out the cross-border details with your host first.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Minnesota RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your trip budget, and it's easier to plan than you'd think. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. Minnesota gas prices tend to sit close to or just below the national average. For a 500-mile loop from Golden Valley to Duluth and back in a Class C, plan on roughly $150 to $230 in fuel. Pro tip: warehouse club fuel stations in Maple Grove and Bloomington consistently have some of the lowest diesel and gas prices in the western Twin Cities, and many are easy to pull into with a mid-size RV before you hit the highway.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Golden Valley?
For summer weekends, book as early as you can. Minnesota State Parks open reservations up to 120 days ahead through the DNR reservation system, and prime sites at William O'Brien, Afton, and Interstate State Park can sell out quickly for July and August Saturdays. Private parks like Minneapolis Northwest KOA and Town and Country fill 1 to 3 months ahead for peak season. Midweek and shoulder-season (May, September) bookings are far easier, often available within a week or two of arrival. Pro tip: use the DNR's free cancellation alerts to grab last-minute openings at the best campgrounds near Golden Valley. It's how locals score sites in peak summer.
dnr.state.mn.us/reservations/index.htmlWhat are the driving conditions like around Golden Valley?
Driving an RV around Golden Valley is genuinely easy compared to many big metros. The city sits at the intersection of Highway 100, I-394, and Highway 169, all wide, well-maintained roads with generous lanes and clear signage. Rush hour on I-394 heading into downtown Minneapolis (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. weekdays) is the main headache, so plan pickups and departures outside those windows. Watch for low-clearance signage on I-94 at the Lowry Hill Tunnel if you're rolling a tall Class A. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March. Pro tip: head out via Highway 55 west or I-394 west to skip downtown entirely, and you'll be on country roads within 20 minutes.
511mn.org/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Golden Valley?
Twin Cities-area campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable trip. Most private parks like Minneapolis Northwest KOA and Town and Country Campground offer full hookups (30/50-amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, showers, laundry, and a pool. Minnesota State Park campgrounds typically have drinking water spigots, vault or flush toilets, fire rings, and seasonal shower buildings; many sites add electric service for an extra nightly fee. Dump stations are standard at private parks and available at most state parks (free for registered campers). Pro tip: top off fresh water at your campground before leaving, since dump-and-fill stations along Highway 61 to the North Shore can be far apart in remote stretches.
dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/camping/index.htmlWhat's actually inside the RV? Beds, kitchen, bathroom, Wi-Fi?
You'll feel right at home from the moment you step inside. RVs on RVezy in Golden Valley come fully equipped: real beds (queen or king in most models, plus convertible dinettes and bunks), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink and cookware, and a bathroom with toilet and shower. Most Class C and Class A motorhomes include a roof-mounted air conditioner (huge for July humidity), a furnace for chilly Minnesota nights, a TV, and a generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi isn't standard, but many hosts offer a mobile hotspot as an add-on. Every motorized RV has seatbelts for travel; confirm the seatbelted-passenger count in the listing. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm exactly what's included so packing is painless.
rvezy.com/What add-ons and options do hosts offer for pickup and drop-off?
Hosts make it easy to customize your campervan rental Golden Valley or motorhome experience. Common add-ons include linens and bedding packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor mats, bikes, kayaks or paddleboards, generators, propane refills, and sani-dump service so you don't have to handle the waste tank yourself. Pickup and drop-off are typically at the host's Golden Valley location, but many offer delivery to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), local campgrounds, or your driveway for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary by host: some include 100 to 150 free miles per night, while others offer unlimited mileage packages. Pro tip: bundle add-ons and delivery into one conversation with your host before booking so you can lock in the total trip cost upfront.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Golden%20Valley%2C%20MinnesotaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay directly through RVezy at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, and your payment is held safely until your trip begins. Hosts also place a separate refundable security deposit hold (typically a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the RV) on your card before pickup, which is released after the trip if the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walkaround with your host at pickup, take photos of any existing scratches or wear, and return the RV with the fuel level, propane, and cleanliness it left with. Pro tip: ask your host if they offer a pre-paid cleaning add-on. It can save you the dump-and-scrub on your last morning.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Golden Valley in winter, and how do I stay warm?
Yes, winter RVing in Minnesota is absolutely a thing, and it's magical if you prepare right. Many Golden Valley hosts keep four-season rigs on the platform year-round, featuring heated and enclosed holding tanks, dual-pane windows, and strong propane furnaces built for sub-zero nights. Use the platform's messaging to confirm the RV is winter-rated before booking, and plan to stay at parks with shore power. Expect temperatures from December through February to range from average lows near 7 F to average highs near 25 F, with serious cold snaps possible. Pro tip: a family RV trip Golden Valley winter weekend to the Saint Paul Winter Carnival or a North Shore trip for ice formations is unforgettable. Bring layers, heated blankets, and an extra propane tank.
