Camping near Kandiyohi, Minnesota
Kandiyohi sits in west-central Minnesota's lakes country, a short drive from Willmar, Spicer, and New London. The area centers on a chain of glacial lakes and prairie-transition forest, with public campgrounds concentrated around Sibley State Park to the north and smaller state and private parks scattered across Kandiyohi, Swift, and Meeker counties.
The closest full-service option is WestRich RV Park and Campground in Spicer, a private park under a mile from Green Lake with 84 full-hookup sites, two pools, and a laundry. Sibley State Park, roughly 15 miles north near New London, contains the Oak Ridge and Lakeview campgrounds and is the largest reservable public campground in the region.
Further afield, Monson Lake State Park sits about 20 miles northwest of Willmar in Swift County, and Spirit of Ripley RV Campground offers full-hookup sites next to Lake Ripley in Litchfield, southeast of Kandiyohi. Together these give RV renters a mix of resort-style hookups and quieter state-park camping within roughly an hour's drive.
Things to do near Kandiyohi
Water dominates the trip list. Green Lake at Spicer is the busiest, with swimming beaches, boat rentals, and lakeside cafes; Lake Andrew inside Sibley State Park offers a quieter swim beach, boat launch, and a fishing pier. Monson Lake is known for walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, and panfish, and a short portage connects it to West Sunburg Lake for paddlers.
On land, Sibley State Park has a network of hiking trails, a paved bike trail segment, and horse trails, including the climb to Mount Tom, one of the higher points in the surrounding landscape. The Glacial Lakes State Trail runs through New London for paved biking, and the park runs year-round naturalist programs useful for kids on rainy afternoons.

The main RV season runs May through early October. WestRich RV Park operates from May 1 to October 1, and Spirit of Ripley opens from April 1 to September 30, so shoulder-season trips work best at the state parks. Sibley State Park is open year-round, but its dump station, showers, and flush toilets operate only from mid-May through mid-October; outside that window facilities are limited.
June through August is peak. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill fastest, particularly the electric sites at Sibley's Lakeview and Oak Ridge and the six electric sites at Monson Lake. Book well ahead for those dates.
Spring brings strong bird and wildflower viewing at Monson Lake, including migrating waterfowl and songbirds. Fall foliage in the oak and maple stands peaks in early October. Winter reduces most sites to primitive use, while Sibley grooms cross-country ski and snowmobile trails when snow allows.
How to book campgrounds near Kandiyohi
Sibley State Park and Monson Lake State Park are both reservable through the Minnesota DNR statewide reservation system, online or by phone at 866-857-2757. Monson Lake is staffed seasonally and managed from nearby Sibley, so questions about either park route to the Sibley office. Reservations open on a rolling window ahead of arrival, and popular summer weekends should be booked as early as possible.
All vehicles entering a Minnesota state park need a vehicle permit, sold as a daily or annual pass separate from the campsite fee. Private parks handle their own bookings: WestRich RV Park takes reservations by phone, and Spirit of Ripley books through Campspot and directly with the owners.
Camper cabins at Sibley are limited to four heated units and go quickly; put them on the calendar as soon as the booking window opens if traveling with kids who prefer a hard-sided option.
What to expect on-site
Sibley's two campgrounds hold 99 drive-in sites: Lakeview, rebuilt in 2025, has 41 modernized sites (40 electric) next to Lake Andrew, and Oak Ridge has 58 sites (34 electric, 24 non-electric) about half a mile from the water. Sites accept tents, trailers, and RVs up to 70 feet, and each includes a table, fire ring, and grill. Drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, dumpsters, and a shared dump station operate mid-May through mid-October.
Monson Lake has 20 sites total: 6 with 20/30/50-amp electric service and 14 wooded non-electric sites, with flush toilets and hot showers in a 1930s stone shelter. There is no dump station on site; campers use the one at Sibley State Park.
WestRich offers full hookups with 50-amp service, city water and sewer, two pools, a playground, and laundry. Spirit of Ripley provides 48 large, level pull-through sites with 30/50/110-amp electric, water, and sewer, plus a private dock on Lake Ripley.
