Campgrounds and RV parks near Lake Elmo, MN

Water dominates the area. Big Marine Lake supports swimming, fishing, and boating, and the Apple River is a well-known summer tubing run, with Float-Rite Park and Apple River Hide-A-Way sitting on the water for easy put-ins. On the Wisconsin side, Willow Falls is the main attraction at Willow River State Park, with viewpoints along well-maintained hiking trails. Little Falls Lake is used for paddling, swimming, and fishing, and the park has miles of hiking trails ranging from easy and flat to hilly and challenging. Families with younger kids often stick to the beach and the shorter loops closer to the campground. Back on the Minnesota side, Lake Elmo Park Reserve, downtown Stillwater on the St. Croix, and the Gateway State Trail give RV renters bike routes, historic riverfront walking, and easy day trips into St. Paul.

The camping season runs roughly mid-April through mid-October across most parks in the area. Willow River State Park takes reservations year-round through the Wisconsin State Parks system, with the 300 Campground serving the main season and the 200 Campground used for off-season stays. Private parks like Golden Acres and the Apple River resorts follow a warm-weather calendar, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Summer is short and busy. Weekends around the Fourth of July and any Twin Cities event routinely sell out state park loops and the tubing resorts. Weekday arrivals are the easiest way to secure a site without booking months ahead. Shoulder seasons work well for RV renters who want cooler nights and fewer crowds. May brings wildflowers and cold river water; late September and early October deliver fall color along the St. Croix bluffs but limited swimming. Winters are cold enough that most facilities close hookups and shut down flush restrooms, though the Disabled Veterans Campground on Big Marine Lake operates year-round for eligible guests.

Sites vary widely by park type. Willow River State Park has 163 campsites on the southern shore of Little Falls Lake, 59 with electric hookups, spread across three loops that can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs. The 100 loop has 50 sites in a more open setting with fewer mature trees, the 200 loop has 30 sites, and the 300 loop has 70 sites. Amenities include drinking water, flush and vault toilets, showers, and a seasonal dump station rather than full hookups. Private parks along the Apple River and near Stillwater lean toward full-hookup pull-through sites, on-site stores, and organized weekend activities. The Disabled Veterans Campground on Big Marine Lake offers RV sites with 30 and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer, plus a beach and boat access. Mosquitoes are active from June into August. Firewood should be bought locally to comply with pest rules on both sides of the river.
